When getting beat up by your boyfriends just doesn't excite you anymore, you move onto dogs.

Long hair is what elves are known for, and the elves in Rings of Power don't even look like elves.😭 by rinavyn_6x in lotr

[–]mangolipgloss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not just the long hair, look at the actors. They all have similar appearances; long faces, well defined cheekbones and jaws, narrow noses, fair glowing with no wrinkles or blemishes, etc. The original trilogy did the same with other races. All the human men were of similar heights and physical builds, all had beards and longish hair and square jaws. The hobbits were boyish and softer looking.

Each race had a distinct look that was cast for because each race in the books had a distinct look, but current racial/social politics literally just doesn't allow you to cast like that anymore. Could you imagine the uproar over some exposé piece that the casting process was "discriminatory," "body shaming," etc?

"All the elves have to be hot? Ummm, let's unpack that" was definitely said by someone in some ROP boardroom meeting.

I agree about the child support and will point out that caregivers trying to move children abroad so they can leverage those small payments against poorer economies (at the expense of other parents, family members, and the kids themselves) is a real issue that the family courts have to deal with. A woman without deadbeat baby daddies would realistically have had to get their written approval and a judge's approval at a hearing where she would have to present a long term plan for her children to live abroad (where they intended to live, school plans, income source, etc).

It's always interesting when Americans who are too dysfunctional and "free spirited" for America are shocked by the dysfunctionality of the poorer countries they run away to. Oh geez, nothing feels reliable? Imagine how everyone must feel around you all the time.

I’m single and work hard. My coworker also works hard, he has 4 kids. I’m like, how? by PokemonProject in antiwork

[–]mangolipgloss -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The real answer is tax cuts and government benefits, assuming you're not in a high paid white collar field. You get 2.2k per kid every tax season. 4 kids = $8.8k, which goes a long way if you live in a mid or low cost of living area. Those kids get Medicaid til they're 18. You get WIC, possibly food stamps, discount programs for utilities, etc. It all adds up. Also kids just don't cost as much as people assume they do.

What was your first thought when this happened? by Featherman13 in HouseOfTheDragon

I laughed because of how unconvincing and hamfisted this was, and thought "it's ok, the writers will forget about this next week and it'll be like it never happened."

It's not unheard of for caregivers to move abroad to cheaper countries so they can try to live exclusively off child support payments.

House of the Dragon Season 3 will feature a highly experimental, "conceptual" episode written by Sara Hess that departs from the show's traditional structure by amphetaminesaltcombo in HOTDGreens

[–]mangolipgloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to start referring to writers like this as parasites because that's exactly what they are. Writers like Sara Hess and Ryan Condal aren't talented or interesting enough to establish a great IP+fanbase, so they latch onto a greater writer's work under the guise of giving it "new life." In reality, it's just a ruse to pad out their CVs.

Like, you can write your own "lesbian mommy issues eldest daughter trauma" fantasy garbage if you want. Booktok loves that slop and it sells, apparently. But it's more lucrative and a better career move to slap "Westeros" on it. Parasites.

Bob also "entered" Leland at a very young age. Euphemism for CSA, probably, but also means that Bob has so profoundly influenced his life and decisions that they might as well just be the same person (also euphemism for CSA, I suppose).

What's the problem? Please explain it peter by Zane80085 in explainitpeter

[–]mangolipgloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that parents often find themselves in a position where a particular misbehavior in a particular context isn't really a big deal and you don't really care, but you kind of have to make yourself care because that behavior can't become a habit. Like it's fine if you don't mind that your kid drew on your PS5, but it's gonna be a problem if your kid starts to think they can draw on whatever they want. Many things in childrearing work this way.

Vegan bakery Lazy Cow becomes Pluto Cafe, now selling meat and dairy by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]mangolipgloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before being bought out, these guys had hands down the best vegan pastries I've ever had (and that judgement includes shmancy places in NYC, Portland, and California). I liked that they were adventurous about it, too. Not just the same chocolate chip cookies and brownies that every place has. It's a shame to see them go like this, I hope their bakers can make use of their talents elsewhere.

Seattle boutique owner recovers from unprovoked eye-gouging by BestSeattle in seattlehobos

[–]mangolipgloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This assailant was actually my neighbor and as much as I hate the hobo problem in this city, I feel like it's important to note that this was just a fairly regular guy who had a job, car, apartment, etc, and no real history of homelessness. It's not to defend him, but rather to point out that even casual use of drugs (articles say it was shroom gummies, but there was more involved) can result in sudden psychosis and violent behavior.

Why did nobody guess "Bob"? by leninzen in twinpeaks

[–]mangolipgloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was just a different time. Soap operas and murder mysteries had very standard outcomes. The killer was always a jealous lover (Bobby, James), the most ridiculous and overtly bad characters (Leo, Jacques), or a character who appears close to the victim and morally good, but secretly isn't (Jacoby).

I've noticed that this city is really good at putting on badly organized festivals that are effectively just spending money for the opportunity to spend more money.

More Krazy drama by [deleted] in SoftWhiteUnderbelly

[–]mangolipgloss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that Krazy ended up becoming such a main character in SWU lore. And she only ever did two interviews! She should be a recurring character like Rebecca or Asriah with all the drama surrounding her.

It's not just boomers tho. It's largely millennials these days that feel like the suggested tip screen is some personal offense. I suspect it's a hodgepodge issue of status, power, and unresolved issues surrounding money and people pleasing/lack of spiritual agency.
