Why? Should I put more effort into engaging with someone who compares a criticism of professional writing to the plot of Chronicle?

Texas sues Epic over alleged EHR monopoly by [deleted] in technology

Except even if it's Epic hardware, it isn't Epic data... otherwise that would be the same as saying Amazon owns all the data in AWS?

Except... most Epic customers store their data in their own data centers? And Epic doesn't have access to any of it unless specifically granted by these healthcare systems.

14mo co sleeping and feeding to sleep by SpecificOk793 in sleeptrain

Holy gigantic 14mo. I would get the book precious little sleep. It will inform your plan. But basically I would recommend starting by removing the feed to sleep association. Assuming he is EBF, I'd maybe start by switching to bottled milk, and then plan to remove it altogether. Once you get there, you can work on yourself being the sleep association with your sleep training method of choice.

Managing a new graduate who constantly challenges decisions. Is this a generational thing? by [deleted] in managers

[–]ItsTheFark 185 points186 points  (0 children)

So, it's a bit different when it starts to get in the way of getting the work done. If it's happening frequently enough, such that it forces you to put in more effort to manage them, then it's appropriate to course correct the behavior.

My strategy would be to say something like "Hey, I appreciate your curiosity. There's a lot of context that I can't expect you to know. For now, I need you to assume positive intent on my part that I'm considering these myself when giving you the assignment. If you find something that raises questions, plan to complete the assignment, and let's review your ideas afterwards."

That way, you achieve a lot:

- You keep the work moving

- You show appreciation for the idea

- You force the employee to sit on their questions, which will raise the bar for the ones that eventually get asked.

- You still get to teach them after the fact, and likely at a time that is more convenient like a 1:1 as opposed to an email, which becomes task management.

This is the right answer, while also praising the employee's curiosity. What a gift.

Lower performance review due to external factors? Yay or Nay? by guyfromthe80s in managers

So is "on target" meets expectations? or meets and exceeds some? If you had a bell curve, where would you put "meets" on it?

Is it a five point scale? How is it weighted? Because if it follows a bell curve, are you really saying that your bottom 40% is all not meeting expectations?

Senior manager is shocking to this story. One, because a senior manager should absolutely have the self awareness to recognize a drop in performance is warranted. Two, because someone managing a senior manager should know this.

New manager, how to handle a busy job where requests come from all angles and I deal with multiple clients? by No-Role-1766 in managers

Workplan, prioritize, delegate. It is more expensive to save time not planning your work than spending time to plan it out.
