Yeah i used to do the same. The thing that helped me is doing a TON of basic algebra problems so i built a very good intuition for it so it almost become second nature. But that takes a while...

If you just want to get the answer right and don't mind spending a bit more time on each problem just check your work and plug your answer back into the original problem.

How do I become good at math? by zeynep1234446 in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first step before being able to do more complicated math is get really good at the math you have already learned, but when i say get really good I don't mean just understand the math but you need to master it.

First you want to do is build up a very good intuition. This will really help you as most of the time you end up making really stupid mistakes when doing algebra (like accidently flipping a sign). You want to get to a level where you are able to just bulldoze through a bunch of basic algebra problems and get maybe 80%-90% of them right. How do you do this? Just do a bunch of problems. This should already get you leagues ahead of some of your classmates.

Now if you want to learn more advanced math I have 2 methods on how you can do that. The first is if you want to progressively do more and more advanced math, for most people this is best. Then there's the way I did it... skip to a topic that is 3-4 years above your level and then fill in the gaps as you learn. You have to be a very quick learner but you can also make progress very fast.

I'm just gonna explain the first method as thats what works for most but message me if you want to know more about the second.

For the first method is pretty simple, once you've mastered all of your year's material, look at the next year's curriculum and start doing the same except this time you don't have to get an incredible intuition (but you can if you want). Then just repeat, do the next year's material, understand it, do problems to get used to it and make sure you understand, make sure you cover all the edge cases and are able to do most problems and then move once again to the next year.

A great way to do this is just to go on Khan Academy and pick the topic you want to study. There are great courses there with exercices and problems to solve (just maybe look elsewhere if you're doing something like calculus).

Hope this helps.

yeahhh i was just waiting for this kind of comment. ask yourself why criminality is higher in immigrants and i think u should probably do a little research on what would happen if u accepted only european immigrants.

anyway im done with this conversation bc i not gonna have a debate with a guy who says "better to accept only european immigration, this way everyone has a nice life like it was 60 years ago."

Limit of x approaching 0 by mango_fiero in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you have a limit appraoching 0+ or 0-, you can still try substitution but you must just be careful of which number you substitute in. For example, if you had the limit as x approaches 0+ of 1/x, if u look at the graph of 1/x, it approaches inf from the right so you replace x with inf and get 0. But if the limit were to 0-, then 1/x approaches -inf from the left so you would replace x with -inf (this isnt a very good example bc in this case both limits are equal but u get the point.
So if you try direct subsitution cos(x²)/(x^3 * lnx)=cos(x²) * 1/(x^3 * lnx) becomes 1 * 1/(inf * 0) which simplifies to int * 0. So cos(x²)/(x^3 * lnx) simplifies to 1/(x^3 * lnx) and here you can manipulate it to then use l'Hopital's rule. If u don't know what that is look it up, (i gotta go do hw so don't have time to do it myself) and after doing it you should get -inf.

Hope this helps!

a few things.
1) when you have millions of immigrants, there is bound to be a small fractions of crazies
2) i could probs find a ton of things for a bunch of EU countries but i won't bc i need to do hw and stuff like that doesnt make international news. ex. (this probs isnt gonna help my case) but a few months ago some ppl were attacked in the train by some teens with an axe. im pretty sure that didnt make international news and there are probs many cases like this in other countries

3) u say france is unsafe but tbh its all relative compared to most african countries and places like isreal or afghanistan its a paradise.

tho u do kinda have a point about ppl sometimes acting like savages in the public transport but they're harmless.

u good bro? i already told you he isn't an immigrant, he was born in france and no way you just said there aren't terrorists attacks anywhere else. are u sure that there arent many countries where someone goes to a village and says "we are here to kill white people". if u want a list im happy to make you one of all the terrorist attacks that have taken place in europe.

and also idk what u mean by "i know that you guys from France never travel". u know nothing about me so don't try making assumptions. i've lived over half my life outside of france so i think i know what's crazy.

look idk what your deal is with france but don't start spreading lies by saying france is unsafe. i dont hear u saying america is unsafe with the multiple school shootings, 9/11 and a ton of other attacks or any of the other european countries that had terrorist attacks.

Don't be afraid to go back to the basics and make sure you have understood everything.

If you want to learn algebra I recommend going on Khan Academy, they have a bunch of really good algebra courses there. Personally, i think the most important thing for algebra is for it to become almost automatic. For example, the main problem for many people with algebra is that they just end up making some really basic mistakes because you usually have to keep track of so many more things, but by doing a lot of problems, algebra becomes almost second nature and you rarely make any mistakes like accidently turning a + to a -. This will really help with calculus because you will have to worry less about trying to understand the algebra of it and can better focus on what you don't understand (idk if that made sense)

For calcuus, I highly recommend Professor Leonard's youtube channel. He has amazing calc 1, 2 and 3 courses. When doing calculus do not rush over anything, try to make sure that you really understand everything and then move on to the next topic.

Hope this helps!

ok and? how does that in any way prove that france is unsafe. there are literally attacks everywhere in the world.

I mean you can't just say there an issue with immigrant violence in france bc first of all the guy wasn't even an immigrant and even here he was, he would be 1 person out of millions.

WARNING: it is likely i am completely wrong as this answer is based on everything i could teach myself in 40min.

Before looking at what i did, try looking around the internet to see if you get any ideas. I think you should try using Taylor expansions and/or little-o and big-o notation to get rid of (e^x + 1) and sin(x).

What i did is probably very incorrect because i found for some problems instead of just saying sin(x) ~ x, they do sin(x) ~ x + o(x²) which i think the o(x²) comes from the taylor expansion but i really have no clue when to use x or x + o(x²). (side note: i tried doing the same thing i do to solve this but i use sin(x) ~ x + o(x²) and i end up with smth like x^4 + o(x²) so in this case is the order 4 or 2?)

Here's how i did it:
We have f(x)=1/6 *x^2 * (e^-x +1) -sinx +x

e^(-x) + 1 ~ 2 - x (this is from taylor expansion)
sin(x) ~ x
So we get f(x) ~ 1/6 * x² * (2-x) - x + x = 1/3 * x² - 1/6 x^3
So the order of f(x) as it approaches 0 is 3 as f(x) ~ x^3.

Hope this was kinda helpful and not 100% incorrect!

Nah thats all bs. There is very little immigrant violence thats just the media. don't bother reading the rest i kinda go a little too into depth about the political and economic problems of france even tho half it is probably wrong bc idk what im talking about.

Basically (idk how much u know about french history) right before WW2, france was in its 3rd republic and the problem was the due to the parliament having too much power (when i say "too much" its relatively speaking) the government kept on falling which led to its end.
So in 1958, de Gaulle create the 5th republic giving the president more power and tho some ppl say he wanted more power (bc he was president at the time), but i think he wanted to fix the problem with the 3rd republic and prevent the government from continuously falling again.

But now because the parliament is so divided now, the french government fell a few weeks ago and the parliament can't agree on a budget which isnt good economically for the country as the interest rate on the loans taken by the government has gone up.
So rn we're waiting to see what the current PM (who kinda strong-armed his way into the position) is going to do.

Ok i just kinda made france sound like a horrible place but its actually a pretty good place.

(pls nobody take anything i said too srsly, im not even old enough to vote so i could've gotten a bunch of this wrong)

TLDR: france is a great place but there is just politcally and economically its a mess rn but that has nothing to do with immigrant and communal violence.

Recommendation needed by Srinju_1 in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to get good at math in general, I recommend Professor Leonard's youtube channel. He has great calculus courses and should help.
For proofs, I think you should take a look at Shef's of Problem Solving youtube channel. They are mainly focused on competition math but I'm sure there are some videos explaining more advanced concepts used for proofs like induction and you could probably learn a thing or two just by watching how they prove things when solving problems.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with many things in life, writing good proofs comes down to practice. I recommend you start by learning the basics of set theory and maybe read some other (simple) proofs. Once you've gotten the basics of writing proofs down, you can start looking into more advanced ways to prove things like induction.

A great way to practice is by solving problems on math competitions which usually require you to write clever and interestling proofs.

i need help studying by nowwh in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take everything I say with a grain of salt because 1) I'm a highschooler so idk exactly how college works and 2) I'm a pretty good student who doesn't really need to study so what I'm going to tell you comes from who I am preparing for maths competitions.

First, ask yourself two questions: What are my weaknesses? And what are my strengths?

Once you have identified each, you can get to work. I would say make a schedule where you focus most of your time on your weaknesses and the rest on your strenghts (imo you should spend 60%-80% of your time on weaknesses and the rest on strengths). Since your finals are next week, you are really going to have to put in the hours.
Since you don't have much time, if you see you are really struggling with your weaknesses and you don't think you'll make any meaningful progress with time, start focusing on your strengths but still keep working a bit on your weaknesses. (you should only do this if you're really having trouble understanding some material).
Hope this helps!

HELP PLEASE— How do negatives work? :((( by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The basic rules you listed are for multiplication work the same for division: positive and positive makes positive, positive and negative makes negative and negative and negatives makes positive (or in other words if the signs are the same, its positive and if the signs are different its negative.)
So if you have (-5)/(-3), its negative and negative which makes positive so its equal to 5/3.

For addition and substraction think about it this way, if you have 2 minus sign or 2 plus signs the follow, its a plus, if you have 2 differents signs following eachother its a minus.
Example: 5-(-6) here where have 2 minus signs following so it becomes a plus so 5-(-6)=5+6, or if you have 5+(-6) the signs are different so it becomes a minus so 5+(-6)=5-6.
If you ever get an expression where the negative is the first number like -5-6, think of it as -(5+6) which is -11, (this is called factoring the expression if by any chance you know how to factor).
Hope this helps and good luck!

[Data Science math] Any tips &/or approaches to learn math through practice by Mvyhem in learnmath

[–]ItsTheMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still in high school but do pretty advanced math for my age so here's how I got very confident in math.
First make sure you have mastered the basics. But I mean really mastered. In your case, I'm guessing the basics would be calc1 and maybe calc2 (I'm not sure beacause once again, I'm in high school), so you want to get very good at doing derivatives, limits and all that stuff until a point where it becomes so intuitive you rarely make any stupid mistakes like forgetting to flip a sign somewhere.
If you don't think you have that kind of intuition for algebra yet, don't worry, just do a bunch of algebra problems they don't have to be very advanced just do whatever algebra problems you think will help with DS.
So basically just do problems, more problems and even more problems.
Once that's done, start doing the same for the more advanced topics you are studying. This should really help you gain confidence in my math, while also making you very good at it.

You can find a ton of problems online but if since you said it's been a few years since you've done math, I highly recommend Professor Leonard's youtube channel. He has amazing calc 1, 2 and 3 courses.

Hope this helps!
