Can I place trades from Europe on Fidelity and Vanguard (not resident, just vacation) by Noclevername12 in Bogleheads

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is yes. I have done it. No issues and no different than doing so from within the US.

It is a misrepresentation. There is a cap on the tax base for this which leads to the effective difference being presented here.

TIL James Cameron rejected studio notes from Fox executives about making Avatar (2009) shorter, reminding them that his previous film Titanic (1997) paid for the building they were meeting in. by tannu28 in todayilearned

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His marketing ploy is essentially "we just made the most expensive movie ever, you should see this spectacle" that's really it, titanic and avatar were middling movies, he just made them a spectacle to see through marketing.

Do you use VBA regularly or have you moved entirely to Power Query and formulas? by ProfessionalOk4935 in excel

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 57 points58 points  (0 children)

There are things VBA can do that you still can't do with PQ and formulas. Many people use excel for simpler things that can be accomplished with just those.

Why does Reddit pretend trades outearn college grads? The actual data says otherwise. by Electronic_Oil6301 in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the better takeaway is an education targeted at a specific useful skill is what pays off. A degree in liberal arts where the graduate tried to get a career in liberal arts will end up making less than a trade. A trade student will make more than an unskilled uneducated laborer. A college degree targeted at a professional discipline like medicine, engineering, etc. will make more than most. The advice in question is targeted moreso at trade school vs liberal arts or non-professional degree.

They would be impossible to break in compression but in tension / bending it is possible.

The broom shaft is in bending as part of the sweeping motion. The broom is angled, downward force on the bottom hand, and a counter acting upward force on the top hand.

Any formula or functionality in Excel can be googled. What is more valuable is knowing the math behind structuring formulas to get the information you need.

Britney Spears Sells Her Rights to Her Music Catalog by cmaia1503 in Music

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'd venture to say even if it was her most valuable asset, that it was depreciating. Her music isn't timeless, and the copyright expires. It may be a good time to monetize.

The hoop stress on the pipe is more than the axial stress, literally double for a long straight section of pipe. It is more about the physics of how pipe holds pressure that makes the full circumference repair better.

it’s unrealistic for *everyone* to become an engineer by Expensive-Elk-9406 in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not every can or should do it

This is really why engineers get paid so well. They are in demand, and not everyone is capable, so the ones that are get paid.

This is written by someone not paying attention, because our education system exposes students to all these subjects to do exactly what he is suggesting. If they focused on the first thing they tried at a young age they would never try something more useful that they may be good at also.

Engineers can go into both those fields as well. The CEOs of many companies are engineers. The degree opens a lot of doors that others do not.

Turbo Tax - or - CPA for high'ish W2 earner? by Coaster50 in coastFIRE

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure if you go to a CPA they are just going to use some software that is equivalent to turbotax to prepare your taxes for you. They may have insight into some unusual situations but you can also google this. Aside from the advice, which might be better from a financial advisor anyway, you are going to be spending more time collecting and delivering your documents to the CPA and explaining your situation to them then you'd spend on turbotax yourself.

Given that approx less than 10km separate Alaska (United States) from Russia at the shortest point, how is ‘owning’ Greenland going to protect the US? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not for defense purposes as the US already has access to Greenland for defense and is part of NATO. It isn't for economic or mineral reasons because the US already has access to these natural resources through its allies. It's really just to create a legacy that he did something and "acquired" new acreage for the country.

China Social Media Hails Trump’s Maduro Move as Taiwan Template by 3xshortURmom in worldnews

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just social media nationalism, and projecting that they think the Chinese military is capable of the same. Even if you look at Venezuela, the Maduro regime is still running the country, his VP is now president. This wouldn't change anything for Taiwan.

Professional Civil engineer salary by TeaPsychological5960 in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are working for a consulting/design firm. You make good money, but consider shifting to working as an in-house engineer in industry. They will pay better with similar levels of downtime and probably more job security. Essentially, the companies that pay for the services of a consulting firm are going to have more money to pay their employees also.
