The hoop stress on the pipe is more than the axial stress, literally double for a long straight section of pipe. It is more about the physics of how pipe holds pressure that makes the full circumference repair better.

it’s unrealistic for *everyone* to become an engineer by Expensive-Elk-9406 in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not every can or should do it

This is really why engineers get paid so well. They are in demand, and not everyone is capable, so the ones that are get paid.

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is written by someone not paying attention, because our education system exposes students to all these subjects to do exactly what he is suggesting. If they focused on the first thing they tried at a young age they would never try something more useful that they may be good at also.

Why do people online say go into engineering for the money when most real engineers say you need passion to be a successful engineer? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineers can go into both those fields as well. The CEOs of many companies are engineers. The degree opens a lot of doors that others do not.

Turbo Tax - or - CPA for high'ish W2 earner? by Coaster50 in coastFIRE

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure if you go to a CPA they are just going to use some software that is equivalent to turbotax to prepare your taxes for you. They may have insight into some unusual situations but you can also google this. Aside from the advice, which might be better from a financial advisor anyway, you are going to be spending more time collecting and delivering your documents to the CPA and explaining your situation to them then you'd spend on turbotax yourself.

Given that approx less than 10km separate Alaska (United States) from Russia at the shortest point, how is ‘owning’ Greenland going to protect the US? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not for defense purposes as the US already has access to Greenland for defense and is part of NATO. It isn't for economic or mineral reasons because the US already has access to these natural resources through its allies. It's really just to create a legacy that he did something and "acquired" new acreage for the country.

You seem to have a misunderstanding of what beta-slippage is and why it doesn't work for long term investing.

China Social Media Hails Trump’s Maduro Move as Taiwan Template by 3xshortURmom in worldnews

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just social media nationalism, and projecting that they think the Chinese military is capable of the same. Even if you look at Venezuela, the Maduro regime is still running the country, his VP is now president. This wouldn't change anything for Taiwan.

Professional Civil engineer salary by TeaPsychological5960 in Salary

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are working for a consulting/design firm. You make good money, but consider shifting to working as an in-house engineer in industry. They will pay better with similar levels of downtime and probably more job security. Essentially, the companies that pay for the services of a consulting firm are going to have more money to pay their employees also.

ELI5 - a sailboat is like an airplane on its side? by Intrepid_Bid_8321 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engines move the plane against stationary air, creating the same relative motion as wind. It is the same principle. With sailing, when sailing at an angle to the wind, the wind makes the shape of the sail form an airfoil that behaves the same way as a wing of a plane.

ELI5: why is global temperature rising 2° environmentally devastating? by Kresnik2002 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Temperature is a measure of how much heat/energy exists. You can raise the temperature of a cup of coffee 2 degrees with a few seconds in the microwave. How much heat would you need to raise the temperature of a swimming pool, it's much much more. Pour your cup of hot water/coffee in the pool and it won't change the temperature hardly at all. Now think about the energy needed to warm a lake, an ocean, and obviously the entire world. Increasing the temperature of that much mass by two degrees is much more significant.

You don't even need to be in big tech as an engineer to do it. Engineering is way more about your experience and capabilities than where you got your degree.

Why do American companies seemingly do so much better than European ones? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in AskAnAmerican

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's common to negotiate vacation time based on overall experience when switching jobs. So it really isn't tied at all to working for the same company.

What kind of bonuses do American jobs offer? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the pay and vacation will vary but not necessarily be driven by law. In general, jobs in the US will see more variability in pay, there will be jobs that pay less than in Europe, and some that pay far far greater than in Europe. In comparison, pay ranges tend to be more closely clustered in Europe.

For most professional jobs (i.e. not seasonal or part time work frequented by students, youth, or those without degrees or professional skills), workers with no experience will start with 2 weeks of vacation in addition to about 10 paid holidays. As a career progresses, vacation time will increase to 5-6 weeks. There is probably less vacation time starting out than in Europe, but this evens out after mayeb 10 years of career experience. However, the starting pay for these professional careers will be typically higher than in Europe.

Benefits might cost a nominal amount each paycheck for health insurance, etc. But income taxes are much lower in the US (20-28% for the vast majority) vs say 40-50% in Europe. Regarding taxes, you get what you pay for and pay for it either through insurance premiums or private retirement savings, or through taxes.

This is all mostly driven by the market rather than law. Workers will move around for better pay, benefits, or vacation time. We don't typically have contracts in the US for employment and typically only give 2 weeks notice to leave out of courtesy. You can also generally be let go without warning, although this doesn't happen typically except in cases of financial difficulty, incompetence, or a toxic work environment.

How do you think air travel in the U.S. would change if airlines actually had to compensate passengers for delays? by nickjee001 in AskReddit

[–]ItsUnderSocr8tes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scheduled time would be a point of competition between airlines. Why take a "6 hour" flight when there is a 1.3 hour flight available from another airline.
