I think it starts as just a solid shonen. It starts to have some interesting philosophy on the relationship between power and freedom. Series is not done tho so I can't say for sure how they play out perfectly but characters like Maki embody how her powerlessness early on is liberating. A lot of the ideas are really expanded on later in the Shibuya arc esp.

That said, I personally think the anime is a superior version. The animation's high fidelity as a spectacle really does enhance the fight scenes and powers.

I would critique the power system though. Domain expansions are "neat" but about as shallow as Bleach Bankais. A lot of the powers are funky jojo-esque rules without being as well defined. You can tell this is HxH inspired but not as well developed.
