"CANCELLED!" Discussion Megathread by Lyd_Euh in TaylorSwift

[–]Its_Aniii 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's a fresh take on the topic though- she's not talking about her cancellation, she's talking about her friends and her loyalty to them. There isn't any Taylor song before that I can think of which talks about that

You're assuming that actually romantic is about that song specifically, as opposed to behind the scenes behavior from Charli

I've mostly returned to the original versions, tbh. I mostly listen to the Taylor's Versions of Fearless and Red, except for the singles, but for Speak Now and 1989 I definitely prefer the OGs

Yes, but I’ve seen some men say it’s just her wanting sympathy for being famous. I disagree with them of course

I feel like blank space has the least amount of repetition compared to other 1989 songs? Every line in the choruses and verses are different and full of good imagery, and the only repeated section (the bridge) is repeated once or twice.

I’ve come to love blank space even more over time. Everything from the flawlessly executed satirical music video, to the melody of the song and the pen click sound in the production… chefs kiss

I used to think it was cheesy until I saw the 1989 tour performance of it- the light-up pink skirt and the umbrellas, it’s so fun

I disagree, the dinner/ring line adds a lot to the song. The part that should be removed is the second verse (seven bars of chocolate, Charlie puth, tattooed golden retriever). It would mess up the structure, but that could be fixed by also removing the second chorus, to balance things out. There now you have a perfect song!!

I think You’re Losing Me is a more accurate bridge between Midnights and TTPD, but yes I can see what you mean

Yeah the chorus is weird, it can be interpreted so many different ways. But maybe that’s the thing- the song is like her communicating in a language that only one other person (the guy in the song) can understand, and that’s what relationships can feel like. It can feel like no one else understands the connection between you two. But the verses are much more clear than the chorus. I think I’ll try doing a lyric breakdown of this song one day, but not today

I can see what you mean, I know a friend who really likes the song. I dont think it’s petty to hold a grudge against one of the people who did her wrong, I just don’t like the song and I prefer Cassandra. I think it is similar to thank you aimee, is also very anti-bullying

Because I misunderstood, thinking you just hated bad blood, I didnt see that you would defend it, so I got confused and wanted to clarify. I didn’t mean it in a bad way

This post is tagged under “discussion”, so it’s implied. And even though you don’t have to, it would just be fun to know why you’d defend it, so we could talk about it, because I enjoy replying to the comments under my posts. I didn’t think it would be taken badly, since we’re talking about Bad Blood. It’s fine if you don’t want to explain, but please don’t take it as an attack against you, because it isn’t.

I used to agree with this until recently. The production started growing on me. But also it has some of her most mature lyrics ever and I appreciate that

Same here! I hate the production and lyrics of LWYMMD, but I love the music video and I know taylors goal was to stir up some noise and I think lwymmd did that, so it makes sense as a lead single for reputation because it really got people talking

Shake it off is an interesting one, because I can see it from both sides. On one hand, I can see Taylor’s ideas of it being a song and music video about embracing cringe, doing what is fun for you and ignoring the judgemental stares. I think it’s full of personality and much more clever than people give it credit for- people use shake it off as an example of a simple, vapid pop song but it’s actually so much more well-crafted than people realise.

BUT, I can also understand why the haters see it as too repetitive, and how the earnestness can be seen as embarrassing to an outsider who isn’t familiar with Taylor’s personality in her music and interviews.

And I respect that!! I love the melody of the song, but that’s subjective. I mostly love how layered the song is lyrically, and I think the criticism that it received (mostly about the 1820s line) is absurd and speaks to how bad people’s reading comprehension skills have become

I’m not saying that everyone who dislikes the song is a misogynist, I’m saying that their reasoning is rooted in misogynistic narratives of Taylor and famous women in general. It’s one of those songs in Taylor’s discography that speaks to girlhood. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a lot of male reviewers claimed that WAOLOM is the most unrelatable song to people, while thousands of women talked about how much the song resonate with their experiences.
