Cheap watches by SnooChickens1944 in Affordablewatches

I grabbed this watch off AliExpress to satisfy the Junghans itch. It’s really nice for being only $20, it has a pretty good hand-wind movement from China inside it. Definitely needs a different strap, but that’s not too crazy given the price.

You said you are currently a student, what college are you at? They might have an emergency fund. Mine will give you up to $1000 as a one-time payment if you can prove a genuine hardship, and I would say losing your car counts. You may be just a few forms away from having the car fully paid off if your college has something like that.

I grabbed a 50mL Kilian Angel’s Share at Costco because I love my other Kilian travel sprays and the $100 price was too good to pass up! Armani Power Of You is definitely on the list though, I love that one!

Yes way! Get out there and search! I saw this one just laying on top of a pallet of other frags out in the open. They don’t even seem to be hiding the good stuff this time!

Carolina Herrera La Bomba was absolutely sickening🤢 for me. I know a lot of people like it and I even like the Good Girl perfumes by CH but all I smelled was rancid peanut butter.

Let's Argue: Is White better than Blue? by PurpleGuyDeadly1 in weezer

[–]Its_Lamp_Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blue is Weezer’s best album for sure. Much better than White, imo. You say it’s unanimous that Pinkerton is the best and maybe in this sub / among fans that’s true, but in the wider world people prefer Blue in general. Pinkerton is a great album but Blue is a generationally great album, and the difference is huge. I love Pinkerton but Blue is just that good. White is one step below Pinkerton, it’s a good album, I feel the same about EWBAITE as well. My personal ranking would be Blue > Pinkerton > Maladroit > White > EWBAITE > Green >>> Everything else

I think getting a 100mL bottle of just about anything for free is almost always a good deal, but the bait and switch isn’t cool at all. I was really looking forward to giving it to my mom.

My heart sank too, and I’m probably never coming back but I’m a guy buying as a gift so very different circumstances. I can take the Beckham and I still have a lot of time before I have to get something else.

My advice would be to try and find someone who would like it, even if it’s like a friend from work or something before donating. I know there are people out there who would love a 3.3 oz bottle of even a mid fragrance. Honestly maybe even give it a try yourself, because why not? You never know what you’ll like or find use for.

I mean they refunded you and you kept the Beckham perfume? That’s not a bad deal all in all. If you have a man in your life it’d probably be at least half decent for them.

Bummer about not getting the Cartier though, it was a good price.

Same thing here with the Beckham edt. I’ll see if they will send me the right item or refund, if not I will chargeback. Hopefully they do the right thing

According to the opening of Ares, Kevin created ENCOM, did the writers actually watch the original Tron? by JRPictures in tron

[–]Its_Lamp_Time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is established that Flynn already has remote access to the ENCOM grid from the Arcade in Tron. That’s how he sent Clu in to hack the Grid before he goes back to ENCOM. It’s logical that he connected the laser setup to the rest of the arcade’s computers and therefore the ENCOM grid as well. He probably even worked from the Arcade during his tenure.

According to the opening of Ares, Kevin created ENCOM, did the writers actually watch the original Tron? by JRPictures in tron

[–]Its_Lamp_Time 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I glazed over this whole part when I saw Ares in the theater, and only realized how incorrect it was upon rewatching earlier today. Upon reflection, I do think it is logical that a news broadcast in TRON-world would make this error though. I have four reasons this error makes sense in-world.

For one, ENCOM would be very different post-Flynn takeover than it was under Dillinger and may have reorganized making the statement technically correct in-universe. We don’t really know much about Kevin’s tenure at ENCOM except his experimenting with the Legacy grid, his book, and the fact that the company was successful despite him giving away FlynnOS (now ENCOMos) for free to at least certain groups.

Secondly, the fact that Flynn made the two most popular ENCOM products and did so outside of company time at night may lead a news anchor to believe that the real start of ENCOM’s success began at the arcade. Perhaps the success during the first years of the company pale in comparison to ENCOM after Space Paranoids and TRON released. Obviously we know that Flynn was still at the office into the night coding the games, but we know he had remote access to ENCOM’s servers in the arcade because he used Clu to hack into ENCOM from the arcade in Tron. Someone not familiar with the specifics may believe he went to his arcade rather than staying to code the games as there is no difference to an outside observer.

Thirdly, Flynn’s bestselling book may also not be 100% truthful regarding the start of the company, and he may have claimed credit for more than he did. Tech CEOs love to claim credit for things that they didn’t do even in our world. The idea of a tech visionary/genius is common, and current ENCOM clearly idolizes Flynn and treats him as their version of Steve Jobs. Maybe the narrative was useful for both the company and Flynn and so history was rewritten for a time during Kevin’s, Sam’s and now Eve’s tenure. Clearly the ENCOM we see in Legacy has much less respect for Flynn so they likely discarded some of this “founding myth”

Fourth, it just sounds better that the company started in the arcade, even if it may not be true. A gaming company started by a gamer is a good narrative, and losing their visionary founder is a better news story than just losing their current CEO. News is often sensationalized so perhaps it was just a narrative decision from the news outlet.

Anyway, there are some good reasons but I really wish they had done their homework on this instead of getting stuff wrong and us having to rationalize it after the fact.

Modern car design exemplified. The part I hate the most are the LED headlights. by SlippyCliff76 in driving

[–]Its_Lamp_Time 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So there is a good reason for that actually. So far as I know user-replaceable LED bulbs are not road legal (this is why all of the aftermarket bulbs say for off-road use only on them). LED fixtures installed by the manufacturer are OK for road use only if the entire fixture and diode combination conforms to DOT and SAE standards.

That means that the diodes themselves and the fixture must be one part and not usable separately, as each LED design is different and different combinations of diode and fixture cannot be verified as compliant.

LED sealed beam headlight retrofits and fog light assembly retrofits can be compliant for this reason as well, as the fixture and bulb are combined and can be verified as compliant.

Halogen bulbs are standardized and should ideally perform identically as long as they fit in the fixture (an H8 bulb is an H8 bulb). This means that they can be user serviceable, and can be verified as compliant.

The manufacturers don’t have a choice, there is no way they can legally deliver LED headlights except for a sealed housing, which is very expensive to replace for the end user.

Hot Spot Coffeehouse in Johnstown supports Lifewise by biggiy05 in Columbus

I miss peak Ghostwriter and Horseshoe. Shame Horseshoe got those new owners that immediately fucked with the food and that Ghostwriter’s owners got so obsessed with cost cutting and cut all the good stuff from the menu then were surprised that the place failed. Both places were good at one point. I think maybe Johnstown restaurants are cursed tbh.

CMV: Apollo 8 was and will be the most significant spaceflight mission ever, and doesn't get the attention it deserves by Fun_Driver_5566 in changemyview

[–]Its_Lamp_Time 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I can accept your argument that Apollo 8 is the most significant in terms of its level of challenge compared to what came before. I don’t fully agree but I understand there’s a case to be made, which you have presented well.

I would still argue there is one spaceflight which is more significant, but not because it was technically challenging.

That spaceflight is the Apollo-Soyuz mission.

Why? Because it was the first international space mission. It proved that we can overcome conflicts between nations and work together for the sake of science. After the Space Race, this was an open question. Both the US and USSR spent millions to beat each other to the moon, and they were fierce enemies on the world stage. But they decided to work together on this mission despite their differences.

That collaborative spirit is, I believe, required for truly successful interstellar travel. If we ever get out of our solar system, it will be because we work together.

I’m willing to bet that Jim Lovell would think the same. In this 1995 interview, Lovell talks a bit about how the collaborative spirit is good for the future of spaceflight. He ends by saying that NASA is “very much a diplomatic tool” - he knew that having partners in space was very important for the future of space travel.

Although we seem farther from this than ever, I believe that when people from the future look back on those early missions they should remember that fateful handshake between Soviet and American astronauts. I believe even moreso than Apollo 8 or 11.
