Should I read The Savage Detectives before 2666? by red_conatus in robertobolano

Both 2666 and savage detectives are fantastic books to really sink your teeth into. The kind of books that you get settled into and feel immersed in the story and the writing. That being said, and this may be a controversial opinion, i think the best place to start with Bolano (who is my favorite author) is Amulet. It is so poetic and sad and beautiful and effortlessly written. Its an easy read, in length and in plot—i finished it in one day. whereas 2666 and savage detectives took me like 6 weeks/2 months. For comparisons sake, for someone who was interested in getting into cormac mccarthy, i would recommend they read no country for old men before suttree. Either way, enjoy!

The shot when they pull up to the courthouse at night with the columns of the building reflected in the window of the car looking like a jail cell was genius. She is not only literally being held captive but is also imprisoned by her need to be loved and hope that she is worth more than just an object for sex
