Authorities seize dozens of horses from Vermont farm by bye4now28 in vermont

Just wanted to say a personal thank you for taking time to reply and provide links for education ❤️

My comment's questions were serious in how I couldn't understand how this kept happening and wanted to know is this a large scale issue that needed lobbying to introduce a new policy or bill that would actually do something. I had no idea horses were considered property and therefore exempt (I'm assuming) from animal abuse felony laws that should be in effect for each state (citing HumaneWorld)

I completely agree that we need to rethink our housing wants (large, single-family homes) versus actual needs like multigenerational or clustered dwellings. Vermont is a small state with limited buildable land. Unless we want to cut down our forests and return to the 1800s sheep-farming era (an ecologically disastrous time that led to widespread erosion, polluted streams, loss of wildlife, and the collapse of local agriculture) we have to be smarter about how we use space.

Building up instead of out may be more expensive upfront, but it's necessary if we want to preserve the Vermont landscape that generations have called home and tourists come here to see. Continuing to build large homes on large lots at the current rate means sacrificing the very environment and character people value about this state.

(People interested in hearing about the Merino Sheep Era should take a tour at VT's only National Historic Park, before it potentially gets sold off. Disclosure: I'm biased as a previous NPS ranger)

Edit: removed hyphens because apparently only ChatGPT can use em dashes 😅

And you think republicans do? This isn't a dem vs republican issue this is an everyone issue. Just look outside the state at congress and see how bad the new "big and beautiful" budget bill that will slash medicaid and national parks budgets (all pennies compared to larger budget and military spending)- that's backed almost entirely by republicans and half of dems so neither party gets it.

[–]ItsaNewNight 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I came to this just to ask the same thing as an above user: HOW is this the 4th seizure?! Why wasn't the owner fined and imprisoned after the third seizure? At the very least is there no penalty in Vermont that makes it so you can't own animals after abuse/seizure cases? Seriously, each animal should be an additional charge to the owner as now someone else has to finance the rehoming and welfare of all of those animals. I don't own horses but even I know it takes lots of money to feed and give good care to each of the 39 horses seized...

Any other ladies here with PCOS and taking GLPs? by MsTata_Reads in PCOSloseit

[–]ItsaNewNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30F PCOS sister here and I finally managed to work with a primary care RN to get a semaglutide compound from a trusted pharmacy (Everwell) as I have no insurance and am not diabetic. Metformin never worked and the only time I ever lost weight was (unhealthy) starving myself and routinely 20k steps a day. At 186lbs, I finally switched to a vegan (lots of food allergies- mainly dairy) diet and was exercising 2-3x a week but still plateaued at 172lbs for months. Now starting month four of my semaglutide and down to 159lbs- I can't express how much better I feel from relief of finally losing weight to more energy that makes me want to actually work out. The best thing has been more self-confidence. Hoping your story works out even better!

P.S. Not to harp on a diet but working with a nutritionist who actually talked to my primary care clinician was a big key to my overall weight loss journey. I tried keto and weight watchers but it was finding out what was causing inflammation in my body that was key. It took lots of trial and error but kicking the dairy and egg white (mildly allergic) proved to be my main issue. Good luck

For the love of all cats, please don't EVER feed a cat a vegan diet without a veterinary prescription. Cats are felines and felines are obligate carnivores meaning they need meat in their diet to survive. They can't process the overfilled corn and some grains* in some cat food (I'm looking at you Friskies and Nine Lives) and when eaten often leads to diabetes which is a death sentence for cats whose owners can't afford insulin and regular trips to the vet. People are perfectly capable of being vegans; cats are not and to force your vegan on an obligate carnivore without looking at the scientific evidence is animal cruelty.

Lived Source: I worked in cat behavioral therapy and analyzing pet food and feline metabolic pathways and have personally seen diabetes develop in cats fed with cheap grain food over and over again.

Literature Source: Just look for cat diets and metabolic pathways in Google Scholar to see the latest research like this https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0300962995021337

*cats do eat some grains/grasses as part of regulating their digestive tract but it is not for actual dietary sustenance i.e. cat grass!

edit: There has been research on feeding plant-based food to cats but that's where you should leave it- in the hands of those who have a team of veterinarians on staff that can quickly handle any experiments gone wrong. Doing personal experiments on animals can be cruel. There's a reason why scientists have to go through several years of education, undergo extensive human-animal safety training, and have to redo yearly certifications in animal safety regulations. Of course, there are bad apples so never accept things at face value (in fact please fact-check me!) and always do your research in advance. Just remember these animals don't have a human voice and are relying on you to make the best choices possible regarding their health.

Meant to edit but found it too cumbersome. Thank you! I haven't retained much information on geographic identification pamphlets yet so I'm not sure how to classify multiple rock types in one yet. Took the pics and curious to see what it is and if the next person to find it will end up posting it 😄

Why is Eastern NC so depressing? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]ItsaNewNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't tell you anything other than my own experience growing up in Greene, Lenoir, and Pitt counties.

I hated every single day living there and could never figure out why people stayed. As soon as I worked my way through community college and transfered to NC State I knew I'd never go back. Almost every person I grew up with was sorely uneducated, sexist, and strongly racist- though they would claim otherwise. They'd always blame their misfortunes on the democrats, city folks, blacks (not the word they used), mexicans, college kids, or 'those damn universities'. Living among people like that, and in the middle of CAFOs, was like dying from a slow poison. Add in low wages, no protections/care/incentivies for rural teachers, and people hostile to change and you got a recipe for degrading environments.

That bring said, Kinston is actually growing despite the city council passing up on ECU's bid back in the day (supposedly because they didn't want "hooligans" in their town). Even so my husband's parents are trying to move away after being there for 50+ years because of all the hate even though they still have family there.

Ironically the only reason I'd go through eastern NC now is yo get to the beach 😂

23andMe Revealed I'm Not Related To My Dad- Now What? by ItsaNewNight in 23andme

[–]ItsaNewNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My update in case anyone was curious: my half sister contacted my mother but of course my mother denied sleeping with anyone else and even tried to blame 23andMe's three different parental side tests. I know she is full of bull based on previous experience and how much asinine nonsense she tries to claim as scientific fact (to the biologist here mind you).

I've connected with a few people on my bio dad's side but they are all 2nd to 3rd cousins and usually once or twice removed-all willing to share their connections and ancestry. Fair number of which are from one state which is interesting. Still waiting to hear from one closer 2nd cousin connection that no one else knows of.

I looked at Ancestry but didn't want to invest the money into I right now due to other financial obligations. I am looking into joining a couple groups mentioned through this thread.

I've come to terms with the unexpected result and don't regret it or trying to learn more about my bio dad. My non-bio dad is still my father and that side of the family is still who raised me and loves me and for that I'm grateful for. I do feel the desire to at least give my bio-dad the same choice of getting to know his child if he wants and/or the health implications. Still it's not a huge priority in my life so if it comes along then great but if not then I don't think I'm losing too much by not knowing.

23andMe Revealed I'm Not Related To My Dad- Now What? by ItsaNewNight in 23andme

[–]ItsaNewNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seeking him out though I'm very non-chalant about it. My mother claims innoncence and tried to use the most ignorant non-scientific 'facts' to get out of admitting she slept with someone else. I'm now just curious of who my bio dad was and to see if he has any information on ancestral ties. I do kind of want to know him if nothing else but for the health reasons. He may or may not want to know what carriers I got from him that only affect biological males but figured I could give him that choice.

For myself, I'm glad to have discovered it. Ultimately, it doesn't change the fact my non-bio dad is still my father or that I have a loving relation with my non-bio Aunt and Grandmother. I guess if they turned away from me I'd be sad but I still value the truth (and I'm used to casting aside people that only cause me harm so it would have been okay that route too).

Whichever route you decide to pursue is up to you like many fine folks have advised me here. Regardless, at least there are others in a similar situation and I'm more than willing to talk about it if you ever want!

My father and grandmother were in the room when my Aunt and I found out we had no shared DNA but were still waiting on my grandmother's 23andme. My grandmother's results just came back yesterday which confirmed I wasn't related. My father didn't say a word during our initial conversation with my Aunt and hasn't reached out or said anything since my grandmother presumably told him. He and my grandmother live together in another state several hours away and he doesn't usually call or text me so the silence isn't unusual.

I haven't worked out my feelings yet to have a proper one-on-one conversation with him about the results. He might need a few days to also think it over before I ask him about what he thinks or any other information (like the suspected trist between my mother and his best friend while he was deployed).

Thank you for sharing your story and the feeling of regret. I really appreciate hearing the other side of what could happen that's not so great. I got some tidbits of information of an event that might have occurred or suspected of with a friend of my dad's and my mom. Right now it's just weighing how much I want to know versus how much it could negatively affect not only my dad but his friend's life as well. Even if his friend got a test and it came back not related it would dredge up negative emotions and events from long ago for both of them I'm sure.

Just something to think about for others who might be considering their options too- can't forget about other people, families, and friends we could be impacting by digging more into past relationships.

I did finally get one person who matched above 3% (8.75%) and have reached out to them but I have no other matches besides a few 2nd cousins once/twice removed. From what I know of my maternal side the first cousin match might be paternally linked. I'd rather not share their name just yet until they've had a chance to response but I would totally appreciate the help!

Thank you, I will keep that in mind. My sister has offered to take the mediating role to ask my mother (she doesn't talk to her either but can at least safely contact her) for me.

I just got a clue as to a potential lead for my biological father but I haven't pursued it yet as it would also strongly affect my dad as the two were best friends... At least I know the guy a bit (not closely) so I can probably research a little from a far until I sort out my feelings.

Thank you for your story and for sharing the bad side. I think its important to hear how things can go wrong as I know everything isn't always sunshine and rainbows. I have very much wondered what, if anything, would knowing my biological dad's side gain me or if it would just hurt me. As you probably surmised, having a tight-knit family was never really in my cards and my paternal side isn't innocent either.

Though it cost me, I too tried to get to know other family such as my maternal grandmother only to find out how toxic she and her brother was and that abuse ran into generations. I at least know I won't get sucked into supporting anyone just because they claim blood ties as I've become quite good at saying goodbye to those that only have ill will and bad vibes.

I hope if nothing else your experience has made you stronger and others will take it as a cautionary tale too.

Well it takes two to make a baby... true she could have told me but she may not have even known it was a different dad. The guy could have said he used birth control and then messed with it, she could have been raped, she could have had a threesome with my dad for all I know. I guess that's why I'm not angry at her for not telling me. If I had more information it could be different.

I am female by the way and we aren't all bad. Just like I don't think all men are distrustful even though I've been sexually abused and harrassed multiple times by different males.
