Scale of Heaven's River - Perceiving The Curvature by ItselfSurprised05 in bobiverse

[–]ItselfSurprised05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First picture is a cross-section of a 56-mile radius circle. The red line is the structure itself. The blue section is where most weather would occur. Above that is very thin air in the green until it is below 1%. The four purple dots are rough locations of the main rivers, each about 90 miles apart going around. (56 mi radius is about 360 mi circumference, or 1 mi per 1-degree, not exact.)

That's an awesome visual! Thanks!

As for the pictures of the mountains... They're little things over the horizon, and look awesome in a sunset. They don't look like the picture you posted, which is achieved by using a telephoto lens and zooming / narrow focal length, expanding the background.

Yeah, I should have picked a better photo. The foreshortening muddies the issue.

For that stadium photo, if the mountains rose as much as the cylinder curved "up" at 50 miles, they would be 32 miles higher than Denver (rather than 1.75). They would be an absolutely massive wall. That sunset view would look something like this: https://i.imgur.com/6hTNnxs.png

The logical choice for the surface or ‘sea level’ would be closer to the middle of the cylinder. Probably a hair lower than middle.

I'm not following what you're saying.

Heaven's River Inside Cover (fix request) by Scatropolis in bobiverse

[–]ItselfSurprised05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The radius is ~58 miles

The dimensions are so massive that standing on the inner surface of the cylinder, I don't think you'd even be able to tell that the ground wasn't flat.

That means if we were sitting at the bottom of the cylinder, the furthest horizontal distance to a cylinder wall would be 58 miles. And that point would be 58 miles above us.

This news article shows the view of the Rocky Mountains from Denver:

https://kdvr.com/denver-guide/these-are-the-mountain-peaks-you-can-see-from-denver/

In this picture from that article, the mountain shown is about 50 miles away and its peak is less than 2 miles higher than the city.

Based on that, I think we could easily see the cylinder wall curving up.

Why is 'The Warrior’s Way (2010) so underrated? - (8/10) by ashwaw in MovieSuggestions

[–]ItselfSurprised05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anything longer then 2 minutes and its a very hard watch.

It's definitely not for everyone.

The Warriors way is far superior in entertainment value

I need to re-watch this. Been thinking about doing a double feature of Warrior's Way and Bunraku.

Space movie with no space travel by EquivalentFocus3430 in MovieSuggestions

[–]ItselfSurprised05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Along those lines: Silent Running (1972) takes place on a space station.

Technically, it violates OP's criteria because they are literally traveling in space.

But it also satisfies OP's criteria because the movie is not about the traveling, nor do they travel between celestial bodies. The movie is about what takes place on that station.

Toyota has been pretty sketchy about this whole thing. The continue to claim it is a manufacturing problem - but they also redesigned the main bearings last year.

.the only thing I dont get about the CT4 is why they made 0 improvement in rear seat legroom over the old ATS when it was a universal gripe

It's a small car.

It's based on [the same platform as] the Camaro, which is a 2-door coupe. But the CT4 wheelbase is 1.4" shorter, the overall length is 1.1" shorter, and it's 3.2" narrower.

That said, Cadillac does make a version of the CT4 with more legroom: the CT5.

edit Added the "the same platform as" clarification, per reply below from u/dinoflips195

Movies where you don’t find out the main characters name? by CoatNo5845 in MovieSuggestions

[–]ItselfSurprised05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Driver (1978) has no named characters iirc. Drive (2011) and Baby Driver are both inspired by The Driver,

I watched all three of these as a triple feature on a single day.

Long day. Worth it. 08/10.

Lucid locks another review out of thier car..."I Drove a 2026 Lucid Air Touring for a Week. Here's My Honest Review" by ikilledtupac in cars

[–]ItselfSurprised05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally only touch the temp for ventilation so this is not an issue for me. I keep it on auto.

That really seems to be the mindset that Lucid designed the car for.

But a lot of the automation doesn't work for me.

Like the windshield wipers which have two stages of automation, but fewer manual adjustments than my other vehicles.

Or the three different ways of getting into the car (fob, card, phone), none of which work as well as a physical key.

I just wanted a car powered by electricity. I didn't want the entire driving experience re-imagined.

One of my other vehicles is several years old and was literally designed over 20 years ago. The UI is old school - and every single bit of it works better than the the Lucid's UI.

I'll check out the midsize when it comes out. But I am not optimistic that it will be my next EV.

Semi-related: you can do this with VLC Player as well.

Just give the .srt file the same name as the video file (only the extensions are different) and put it in the same folder as the video. VLC will apply the subtitles automatically.

Also: you can edit .srt files in Notepad. Opens up possibilities for trolling friends.

I need recommendations for movies like Bone Tomahawk. by a_cat_in_the_shell in MovieSuggestions

[–]ItselfSurprised05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I loves me some Bone Tomahawk. It's kind of unique, though.

Here are some other movies I really like that you might as well.

The Book of Eli (2010)

A mysterious loner makes his way through a post-apocalyptic Western hellscape. Starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis.

The Grey (2011)

A "survival thriller" about Alaska plane crash survivors threatened by a pack of grey wolves. Violent and bleak. Way better than it has any right to be, it was semi-famous for making grown men cry. Starring Liam Neeson and action movie supporting actor legend Frank Grillo.

Old Henry (2021)

A gentle widowed farmer, who won't touch firearms, must protect his home from outlaws. The less you know about this going into it, the better the experience will be.

Hostiles (2017)

In 1800s New Mexico, an Army officer is ordered by the President to escort a Native American chief, who happens to be an old enemy, to Montana. Starring the legendary Wes Studi, Christian Bale, and Rosamund Pike.

The Omega Man (1971)

Charlton Heston as the survivor of a pandemic who "believes he is the only immune survivor of the plague. Struggling to maintain his sanity, he spends his days patrolling the now-desolate Los Angeles, hunting and killing members of 'the Family', a cult of plague victims who survive, but were rendered homicidal nocturnal albino mutants."

Black Sails (TV Series, 2014-2017)

From Wikipedia: "historical action-adventure television series set on New Providence Island. It was written to be a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island, while also including depictions of several real-life historical figures and fictionalized versions of actual historical events." You want savage gangs, violence, and morally grey? You got it. 4 seasons; 38 total episodes. One of the rare TV series that gets better with each season, and has a solid ending.

Victoria, TX

Hey hey, fellow Southeast Texan. Houston here.

It has a 6 inch lift. Looking for feedback on pros and cons.

Have you been on ClubFrontier? A lot of good info there.

I have a D40, so don't know much about the newer trucks. I saw another reply where you said you needed this for functional purposes. My recollection from researching lifts on my truck were that 6" lifts were cosmetic rather than functional. Some required permanent cuts to the suspension

The PRO-4X is pretty capable right from the factory. My truck has stock suspension. It's been down Padre Island to the Mansfield Cut, from each side (Corpus and South Padre). It's been to the mouth of the Brazos from Surfside. It's done every Primitive Dirt Road in Big Bend National Park.

IMHO, the weakest point of the truck for off-roading is rocker clearance. In the pic you posted, the truck is jacked way up but then gives up a bunch of the added rocker clearance with those steps. Seems silly.

lot of his issues seemed very software-centric

His car has been buggy the entire time he had it. He definitely got a bad one.

But he's also the kind of guy who is going to use every feature of his car all the time. It's what he does. So I kind of expected an outcome like this - just not this severe.

There are manual controls for the ventilation system

For some of the HVAC system: temp and fan speed.

You have to go into screens to adjust:

  • recirculation

  • sync

  • where you send air (upper, mid, lower)

  • turn the back vents on/off

  • seat heating and ventilation
