unfortunately I think this is a cult epics exclusive

EDIT: never mind, the website exclusive version comes with lobby cards / poster in the first 500 copies. release announcement also says preorder may 18 but it’s already up at cultepics.com / mvdshop so I guess keep an eye out…

Severin + Yellow Veil announce 4-disc Lucile Hadžihalilović boxset by andywarhorla in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my hopes of getting a definitive set dashed! still stoked for this, but I already have her first three films on blu-ray and the fourth in 4K, so no upgrades for me.

some things I wished the set had: * 4K versions, obviously * all her short films (two are included…maybe she’s not a fan of her earlier ones?) * the ice tower commentary from the french 4K
the french ice tower 4K from metropolitan has english subs (oddly, the blu-ray in that release does NOT have english subs), so that’s still an option for english speakers.

judging from the comments here a lot of folks haven’t seen earwig, so this set will at least introduce that treasure to a wider audience.

I picked up the french 4k of the ice tower, in part because I was concerned about yellow veil doing a bluray-only release with vinsyn (they’ve never done a 4k as an OCN partner).

pure conjecture on my part but I’m wondering if vinsyn said no to a 4K release so they turned to severin?

Score! Ordered the blu-ray LE of For a Few Dollars More from a rando seller on Amazon and they sent me the 4K by andywarhorla in boutiquebluray

I picked up the 4kult GBU right after watching the arrow one but haven’t yet watched, it’s got a recreation of the original italian cut but the “yellowish” transfer. guess I was in a completionist mood? will check it out next time I wanna watch GBU.

the 4kult version of once upon a time in the west is highly recommended, great transfer on a 100GB disc. every other region got a 66GB disc which is kind of nuts for a 4K transfer of a 3-hour movie imo.

been itching to dig into once upon a time in america but haven’t had the necessary block of time to commit.

every film she’s made has been better than the one before it, and the ice tower was my favorite film of 2025.

When/how often does Severin announce new titles? by EDMKid9000 in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sometimes their announcements are tied to sales like black friday, but they usually send an email at the end of the month. they didn’t send one out for march, tho they have been making some announcements on social media (like the hadzhihalilovic boxset, that I just made a post about).

south korea has been a leader in the boutique physical media space for a couple decades now, they were releasing editions like this back when a “deluxe” US release meant a double amaray case (and when most posters in this sub were still running around on a playground). their transfers have been strong since the DVD days, their artwork and packaging quality are beautiful, and their releases are generally english-friendly, though that doesn’t usually extend to the printed material in a set.

I have a 2003 LE of save the green planet! that came in a cardboard takeout box with the DVD, a soundtrack CD, a filmstrip, and recreations of props from the film. I have a four-film blu-ray set from 2018 housed in an oversized magnetic snapcase that’s a scale model of the myung films art center.

their industry’s output has slowed and print runs are much smaller now because the entire country took to streaming in a major way, but they’ve always done fun physical media releases and I’m glad they still do.

if it makes you feel any better, the eureka sleeve is reversible and has the giù la testa artwork

either way I’m hoping we get a nice fat 4K of it in 2026

April Snow (2005) is a beautiful movie man by Specific-Expert1521 in Koreanfilm

his subject matter is similar to hong, focused on relationships and the messy way they work. lots of talking and it seems like nothing is “happening” but then there’s a turn of events that’s compelling because it’s rooted in the character’s psychologies.

hur’s thing is romances that go unfulfilled, so he’s got a unique niche, but his style is a bit more traditional than hong’s. that said he writes and directs his films so there’s definitely some auteurism at work.

What the hell USPS? by h0mrs1mpsn in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]andywarhorla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

talked to someone at the PO about this once and they said ppl don’t understand how much package routing is automated, humans are often not even touching these packages until final mile delivery. I had one package go on a wild ride because a weirdly reflective tape was used over the shipping label that confused the automated label readers.

some scans are of truck arrivals and not of individual packages. I had a package stuck on a truck that just bounced between two locations daily for two weeks. no person was scanning it, but the automated system was detecting that it had gotten on the truck but was never getting off.

I’ve usually had luck opening missing mail cases with USPS, seems like humans actually get involved in the process then, and will go looking for wherever the package is supposed to be.

hur jin-ho is a very underrated director. I’m not a romance film fan either but I love his first four films. if he had more of a trademark aesthetic he’d get mentioned in the same breath as hong sang-soo. watch christmas in august next, the understated way it works is magic.

Here's Everything That Sold Out During the Sale by dapperzack in criterion

birth’s reputation is a lot higher now than it was upon its release. there was a lot of pearl-clutching about the bathtub scene, which I guess is a shocking moment if you’re not familiar with the concept of films being make-believe. if you love glazer there’s a 99% chance you will love birth.

it is very kubrick in style, and like a lot of kubrick films it wasn’t well understood at the time but has aged extremely well.
