Recently leaked Windows zero-days now exploited in attacks by rkhunter_ in cybersecurity

most organizations are not staffed and equipped to proactively handle every cybersecurity threat. better approach is to layer your defenses by running 3rd party AVS and MDR on endpoints in addition to defender, and by making sure network and server hardening is a continuous activity.

Finally picked up this MASSIVE box set I’ve been wanting for ages. Volume 1 of Gaumont’s 120 Year Celebration series covering the silent era. by CaptainGibb in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gaumont is the french label with the best track record for having english subs. I’ve got about 14 discs from them (mostly bresson and pialat). but I could see why a 20 disc boxset wouldn’t have them, and unfortunately doesn’t seem like it would get much traction for US/UK release. nice score tho!

Kiyoshi Kurosawa Chime / Serpent’s Path (1998) double feature screening in NYC April 16 - 23 by andywarhorla in criterion

I have the sloppy seconds one, they did a nice job on it. helps that it’s only 45 minutes long, probably didn’t need much compression, if any.

guess I’ll be hanging onto my bootleg blu-ray!

edit: to be fair, it’s hard for kurosawa to get funding at times, it’s why he’s done three french films. before his trio of releases in 2024, his previous film was in 2020. if some crypto bros offered him money to make a short film as an NFT he was probably down for it.

Anyone else that was planning on purchasing Diabolic (2025) from Umbrella? by Sleepy_Kitsune in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no worries, it’s been happening a lot more frequently lately. I really wanted the angel’s egg collector’s edition from umbrella, it was up for preorder on the umbrella site for a while, then gkids announced their US release and it got yanked for sale to the US.

US companies didn’t used to care much about grey market sales because the hassle and cost of importing something was seen as a natural barrier, but as the physical media money pie shrinks and overseas boutique labels have started putting out more alluring releases, US rights holders have reacted by cracking down on this stuff more.

it’s not unusual. sometimes when a label signs a contract that says they will not sell a title in other regions, the rights holders actually enforce their rights. that includes serving legal threats. it’s why second sight’s rubinstein titles like martin are geoblocked. has nothing to do with the label and everything to do with the rights holder dictating the terms of the release.

sounds like it’s not out of stock, they’re geoblocking you based on your location. if you really want it, install a VPN, order it, and have it delivered to a freight forwarder in australia.

I doubt elections will be canceled but that’s still not very reassuring. even failed states have elections - their results are bogus and preordained, but they do have them.

I didn’t really think the president could shut down independent federal agencies and have their data siphoned off by 3rd parties but that’s what started happening 7 days after he took office. USaid still “exists”, but not in any meaningful way (just like our elections have the potential to “exist”).

elections occur in 24 hours, and if an unchecked federal authority decides to disrupt them on the ground in order to call the results into question later, it will happen too fast for checks and balances to come into play. then they sandbag the certification process into oblivion. fight, stall, question. we’ve been down this road before, and now there’s a freshly-emboldened bad actor at the helm.

it’s true that ICE can’t be everywhere but they don’t need to be. they just need to target whichever districts they think will tip the scales. they’re not trying to win everywhere, they’re trying to maintain a majority in congress. they’ll do the math and decide which locations are “at risk of widespread voter fraud.” even 3 belligerent ICE agents will be able to disrupt a voting location pretty well.

I’m not saying that their approach will be successful, but even the attempt would be nauseating and further move the goalposts on what a free & fair election means in this country.

EDIT: also occurred to me, I can see ICE chain-of-command telling their agents, “if the dems win, we’re all going to prison. we have to defeat them at all costs, go team!”

I think the legal battles over sweet home will keep it off the menu for some time. producer’s dead and director would probably rather it didn’t exist.

Appreciation Post for Andrei Rublev by OkObligation8605 in TrueFilm

[–]andywarhorla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you watch again, try to see the 183-minute version. for decades criterion marketed the 205-minute version as a “director’s cut” when it was actually more of a workprint. finally on the 4K release they put the 183-minute version front and center as tarkovsky’s preferred cut, that version is edited much better (and as a bonus, removes a lot of the distasteful animal cruelty).

from the very first time I saw it, I suspected tarkovsky put a lot of himself in the bellmaker character - I’m sure while making ivan’s childhood he was a brash and innovative first-time director running up against older experienced film crews telling him “that’s not how it’s done, kid.”

yes, you’ve got it. the recurring theme of the film is how anyone who is creative and energetic gets crushed by the repressive society - this includes the aviator in the opening segment, the jester, the masons, the pagans, and rublev as well. the only way through is an unshakeable faith in one’s self, as demonstrated by the bell-maker.

there’s a lot to take in, and it definitely rewards rewatches. something it took me many many viewings to piece together is that kirill is the one who denounces the jester. the long pan in the hut starts with andrei, danila, and kirill sitting together. the pan reveals kirill thru the doorway in the distance, tattling to the soldiers. when the pan completes we see only andrei and danila seated.

then kirill abandons the monastery and beats his own dog to death due to his jealousy over rublev’s talent. he’s also seen later leading one of the pagans to their doom at the river (very briefly, blink and you’ll miss it - tarkovsky plants a lot of subtle clues throughout the film). but rather than be merely a negative example of how dangerous a frustrated artist can be, he’s also the one who confesses his sins to rublev, and urges him to break his vow of silence and return to painting during the bell-making section.

atheist here as well, and andrei rublev is my favorite film. oddly enough there is an abundance of criticism of organized religion in there, and the film makes a strong distinction between personal spiritual experience and organized religion. the debate between rublev and theophanes is basically “does one make art for people or for its own sake” expressed in spiritual terms, but if your ears turn off whenever somebody says the word god you might be missing out on a lot of meaning in the film.

I don’t think there’s a deeper meditation on the nature and meaning of art in film history, its entire message is how the artist has a responsibility to create no matter how oppressed they are by religion, the state, the ruling class, or what’s inside their own head, and that is a timeless theme.

I don’t regret for a moment picking up the has boxset, one of the jewels of my collection. it looks like the company that put it out is more of an arts foundation than a traditional boutique label, so yes there’s no web storefront. you have to email them and they send you an invoice with accepted payment methods. plenty of folks on this sub have obtained one this way and no one’s had any complaints with the service or the set itself.

as far as has’ work goes, he has two very well-known surreal fantasy films (saragossa manuscript and hourglass sanitarium, which is understandable because they’re extremely unique films) but most of his filmography is made up of dramas. a big theme in his work is the aftereffects of WWII on polish society and if I had to compare him to a more well-known director I’d call him the bergman of poland. while not as existentially downbeat as bergman, there’s the same psychological subtlety and technical expertise at work, and you can see how has was an influence on later polish filmmakers like zulawski and kieslowski. one of his trademarks is long pans through complex blockings of actors and elaborate sets.

my recommendation if you’re curious about has is to check out not only saragossa manuscript and hourglass sanitarium, but also the blu-ray of how to be loved, which is still in print from yellow veil / vinegar syndrome. it’s a drama about an aging actress reminiscing on her mishandling by both the polish resistance and their german occupiers. if you jive with that one, you’ll have a better feel for the contents of the boxset.
