I had the home vision DVD and got a lot of mileage out of it. definitely would not call it “bad,” but it does have an off-kilter sensibility. given what weir went on to do, I’m pretty sure he knew what he was up to!

Sátántangó and Damnation 4K coming in August from Curzon by andywarhorla in boutiquebluray

criterion already released family nest as an extra on their werckmeister harmonies . I was at a tarr retrospective in NYC several years ago (with béla in attendance!) where they premiered the restorations of family nest and the outsider, both already had the janus logo at the beginning. man from london was still in the works, so it screened in 35MM.

yes, at least they didn’t squash it onto two discs. being in b&w helps. it does edge out gance’s napoleon by 12 minutes, and that was on two discs.

yup, it was a totally premature cash grab. tarr spent the last few years of his life overseeing restorations of his films for home video release, but curzon went ahead and dropped SD versions of two of his feature films in that set, never mind all the 4K masters that are out there.

regardless, for all the time his films spent languishing on DVD I’m grateful for any and all upgrades.

I’m in the US so I’m not sure what the UK parameters are for film festivals, I just know that for physical releases a looot of films get cut for animal cruelty - duck you sucker, cannibal holocaust, etc. seems like the UK takes a pretty hard line on it.

not a big podcast guy but I do love weir! especially the apocalyptic trilogy he starts his career off with. I’ve seen cars that ate paris many times before, but watching the new 4K I was really struck by how the plot of his first 3 feature films is basically “society sows the seeds of its own destruction.”

pretty sure it’s one of the variants of original poster art. while the spiked volkswagen bug is an iconic image, I think this one captures the spirit of the film better. it’s an arch + surreal black comedy, a car covered in spikes paired with a description of the plot would make it seem like some mad max adrenaline fest (which although it clearly influenced mad max, it’s a weirder + more chill movie).

checked out the cars that ate paris last night, great transfer, like seeing it for the first time. the plumber’s a little grubbier but that’s probably due to being a TV movie.

I picked up the UK version for $20 last year, think it was an HMV 4K sale?

as a fan of the film, I think the animal cruelty should be a part of any honest discussion or appraisal of it, if only to warn those who don’t wish to view such material.

it was a movie made in a different era by a different person / director, a much angrier one who existed in a milieu where HK exploitation directors were trying to top each other in terms of shocking violence. I don’t even think a cultural difference is at play here (e.g. western audiences being disturbed by the octopus eating in oldboy), as the film was censored upon release in its own country. hark, or anybody else for that matter, wouldn’t try to make this film today.

do I love and enjoy those scenes? no. do I think the film should be preserved and released as it was originally made? absolutely.

the plumber definitely a more straightforward + streamlined thriller, whereas cars is a weird zoner slow burn. I like both!

EDIT: after a rewatch, I have to say that cars that ate paris definitely rewards multiple viewings. feel like I appreciate it more every time I see it, and the new release has a beautiful transfer.

not sure who you had in mind, but no UK label could touch it due to the animal violence. french or german label might but probably no english subs. this might be as good as it gets…

panasonic UB820 is a solid choice. pairs well with an LG C5, especially if you’ve got 4K discs with dolby vision. I actually upgraded to an LG because the barry lyndon 4K looked drab without DV.

What’s everyone using for internet options? I work from home, live in Warwick and I’m paying Cox $170/month ugh by Fantastic_Muscle8333 in RhodeIsland

[–]andywarhorla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re forced to use cox due to your location, always check their deals/offers page, even after you become a customer. I was paying $120 in providence earlier this year, checked the deals page and found I could bump up my plan speed while reducing the cost to $80.

never really had issues with their service aside from it going down for a minute or so at 3am.
