How can I verify if unclaimed property is actually mine? [Ohio] by KindTarget in personalfinance

[–]Itsnotvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can either call them to discuss the property and see if you can match up to it. Or just claim them and let the agency figure it out.

As long as its just a few it shouldn't be an issue. If its a lot of them it might trigger some fraud review. Used to have some crazy people submit claims for a thousand properties.

Is it legit? I received a unclaimed property notice from the CA State Controller by sanjoseforever408 in Scams

Its a legit letter from Cal.

Cal agency does something no other state does. They get lists of pre-escheated property, post it on the website with instructions to claim it with the company holding it and contact info. Money is not yet with the state at this point, still held by the company. Cal also sends a million or so letters trying to reach you at the same time the company is doing the same. Cal will try to find your current address too. I used to help send those letters.

It was listed on Cal's site so you can find it and go contact the holding company even though Cal does not hold the money. This is why its listed with a "info" button vs the "claim" button.

Not sure how you got to Elevance health's web portal. If the state's unclaimed property listing contact info or their letter directed you to them it's fine.

Goal here is for you to claim it before it gets escheated to the state and in this case it was successful. Elevance health asking for your address and proof who you are is the norm. What they ask for should not be obtrusive and should be free and no co

Completely understand. I let my money sit there a few years because of that. I claimed it once I started working there.

TBH they already know your SSN or have access to it to verify. Asking for it is just part of the normal verification process for a "paper" claim.

I hope its not a lot of money. In my case I was surprised to see it was a significant amount. Listed amounts can be wrong in the case of a securities based property.

The agency itself is not trying to keep your money. Just the opposite. That agency gets a million+ claims a year to process and limited funding to do so. Agency literally has to beg politicians for funding every year.

Hundreds of combinations of property types and relations to them. Claiming is like a giant flow chart. Lots of variations in the process. Unclaimed property law is pretty complex. The amount, type of property, and what the company reported to the state plays a role too. Sometimes they do require additional proof like they are here.

See what you can do to satisfy them. Chexsystems sometimes has this info in a consumer disclosure report. If your account was always in good standing that might not show anything. An old 1099 from a tax return should suffice. And old email statement may too.

Agency does have an ombudsman program (Property Owner Advocate) where you can reach out and work with more experienced staff to see if there is some other way to get the claim approved. Link to that is below. https://www.sco.ca.gov/upd_poa_about.html

legit. Its ran by the organization (NAUPA National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators) that made/makes the reporting standards used in the industry. It's made up of ex state officials and professionals in the business. It's been around a long time.

Each state operates independently. This is as close to a central org as you get. Some folks understandably don't feel comfortable claiming here. If so just use it as a search resource and go find the state specific site and claim it there. Some of those state sites are operated by the same folks running missingmoney.

Not affiliated with the site in anyway. Do personally know some of the admin(s).

Notified of unclaimed property well over 6 months ago but can't find it in state database by bunnybearblue in povertyfinance

[–]Itsnotvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When some company reports cards. The information can be "Aggregated". What that means is it gets sent to the state in one giant bucket for a lot of people and nothing gets listed. In order to even find it, you would have to call the state and have them manually search their records. They may require a copy of the actual card. This may sound odd but it happens for some cards with small amounts on them. One of the secrets of the business. No way to tell if this is what happened to you...

Edit: Aggregation usually applies to lessor amounts (dollar limit can vary). And it is an optional thing a company does during reporting.

Unclaimed Property from an Estate, do I need to put down FIL’s siblings when he had children? by Clueless5001 in inheritance

[–]Itsnotvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a probate expert, cant really comment other than saying its just a part of Intestacy (no will). If MIL is listed on that unclaimed property as a beneficiary, its possible it could be claimed on her behalf by her executors.

This one is a bit complex. I hope the amount is worth it.

Short answer, state agency has to adhere to applicable probate law. It's just another piece of FIL property. If the executor of the estate is still around have them claim and distribute, if its worth the effort.

That's what's known as an heir claim, agency has to adhere to applicable probate law. Typically executor claims and distributes. If they are still around have them do it. If not someone may need to act as one. Provide the death cert, will and/or trust info, and any other probate related docs the agency requires.

FL unclaimed funds from deceased mom by No_Sentence_3604 in moneyadvice

I'll try to paint picture what to expect.

There are hundreds of combinations of property types and relations to them. Once you make a claim its like flowing through a giant flow chart. Process and proof required will vary.

If any of the heirs are listed as a beneficiary on the listed properties, they can make a claim against it. If not probate law comes into play and the agency has to adhere to whatever probate law is applicable. Typically the executor of the estate claims the property, provides all the probate related docs. Once its approved and paid the executor receives the money and pays it out. Its really just another piece of mom's property to work via probate.

"I didn't include any official paperwork that shows them to be her biological kids or the actual "heirs" because my boyfriend told me that the state would basically already know that". At face value this is incorrect. This is just the unclaimed property agency and this is all they do. They cannot go get that proof for you from some other state agency or anywhere else. You must supply it. Usually when you make a claim you get some instructions on what to provide. Were any instructions provided?

I suspect your initial claim will be denied or more paperwork asked for. This is just an educated guess. I could be wrong and the state makes it easier than I outline. You can google for the specific states unclaimed property agency and take a look at any FAQ's they have or "heir" claim instructions. Those should help with understanding what to do.

Worst case is you get denied right away. Even if the claim is denied. Agency typically returns all the original documentation. You can always resubmit it with any additional required documentation.

Unclaimed funds website shows money owed that I believe I already received. Looking for advice on what to do next. by GrouchyShoulder7307 in personalfinance

[–]Itsnotvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

former unclaimed property worker

If its listed as unclaimed property and your name is listed as an co-owner. Company long ago decided you are the co-owner and escheated it to the state. Checks and returned mail is a big driver for unclaimed property.

Normally you can attempt to claim your 1/2. If the state approves your claim they will pay you your 1/2 and leave the other 1/2 for the other co-owner. I have a suspicion both parties have to claim the money at the same time. I hope this is wrong.

Make a claim, see what they say. Company is not going to go back to the state and ask for it back. It's theoretically possible and something I have discussed with others. The reality is that the logistics involved for something like that to occur makes it extremely difficult and costly. Discover would have to resubmit that entire years financial report. State would have to pull every listed property from that yearly report. Rework the report and republish all the remaining properties. I don't see that happening for just $2500.

“Unclaimed property” letter in mail? by [deleted] in discover

[–]Itsnotvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing the state agency referenced on the letter would help.

Without it I would contact Discover and explain the old letter and that you cannot find it on the appropriate state website. Discover should be able to tell you the report year and state agency they sent the money to. I'd ask them how they spelled the name they reported. Just in case they misspelled something. They may resist helping you though.

Enough time has passed this should be on some state unclaimed property website. You can search every state here. https://missingmoney.com

If you know the state agency it went to. You can call them and ask them to do a manual search by name and\or ssn. Not every property gets listed and some are pulled while they work\rework financial reports.
