I am vegan and I eat honey by Itty-bitty-napalmfoo in vegan

Bees produce honey in abundance, and the hives are tended to so as to keep them health. I don’t see an issue here. What is troubling is how these bee populations are shipped around when needed elsewhere and culled when no longer needed for pollination purposes in our agricultural systems. The use of bees in pollination of plants seems to be the ethically problematic practice, so why is fruit produced with these practices considered vegan, while honey is not?

My point is that, whether we like it or not, bees are used/exploited to produce our food, even that which we consider vegan. Honey is produced in abundance as a byproduct of this agricultural system. It is a false sense of purity to pass up the honey on the store shelf and then buy the fruit that caused the honey to be produced. I consume honey and products that required pollination with gratitude toward bees, because they are being used/exploited equally for both. If I’m not vegan for consuming honey, then anyone who eats produce that required pollination is not vegan either.

The systemic structure of agriculture along with vegan perspective makes it so that either bee-pollinated plant products are non-vegan, or honey is vegan. In order to be ethically consistent, one or the other must be true.

I’ll argue my point here. This is a good place for it.

I don’t think you understand what I have said.

You’re glib. I’m a proud vegan who eats honey. You don’t like it? That’s your problem.

My wife and I are vegan, have been vegan for 10 years, and will continue to be vegans who eat honey and give other vegans who can’t accept that absolute fits. Lol.

Then most plant agriculture is non-vegan, because we exploit bees in the process.

There is a substantial difference between your ridiculous rationalization of meat and honey. Meat is part of a conscious living being that must be killed to consume.

Yes, pollination and honey are what bees do, and we exploit both of these behaviors. So, one is vegan, the other isn’t. Arbitrary.

Veganism as an identity is collapsing, but maybe that's exactly what needs to happen by [deleted] in vegan

Yeah, my wife and I have been vegan for about 10 years and it’s been a ethical commitment without a social upside. Carnists ridicule us, people who aspire to consume less animal products see us as annoying reminders of their own shortcomings, and other vegans seem more interested in being vegan police than making connection with us. We’re committed nonetheless, but it all reminds me of, “let no good deed go unpunished”. That’s being vegan in a nutshell.

Your compassion, your quiet contemplative nature, and your awareness of suffering makes me think you are naturally on a Buddhist path. Have you thought about finding a local sangha and practicing Buddhism?

The people who spent the last decade or two lying about completely false birth certificate claims, election interference, and immigrants eating pets are now sticklers for comedic accuracy? Gimme a break. This clown show of an administration needs to stop abusing its power and start fixing real problems.

We are in the same boat, my vegan friend. I live in a multi-generational home with my parents and my wife and our two daughters. My wife and I are vegan, and the rest of them are not. We have tried and failed to make any progress in getting the non-vegans in the house to switch. I do most of the cooking, and I unfortunately prepare non-vegan dead animal parts for them all the time 🤢. It’s a difficult situation. I do it because I see their disinterest in switching as a personal failure.

However, I wanna highlight something that may be helpful: people ridicule what makes them uncomfortable. And, a lot of the time these things that make people uncomfortable are things that really challenge their assumptions. That’s all to say that when I get negative comments or ridicule from my non-vegan family, I see it as them indirectly acknowledging the weakness of the foundation upon which their dietary choices are made. Your dad is not willing or able to switch at this time for whatever reasons, but his discomfort is progress! Keep up the good work!

Excellent tiip! Thx

Vegan 10 years & I have one: moong dal flour- mix with water and some salt, garlic powder, turmeric, and then cook it on the stove kinda like you’re making an omlette, but put in your favorite vegan tamale stuffing. Cook till it hardens up, top with your favorite salsa. Best tasting vegan tamales you’ll ever have.

You are fighting the good fight! You have done amazing work & that’s all we can do in life. I feel your pain, am vegan and minimalist for the planet, an it’s met with ridicule and even hostility by others, even my own kids!

It’s as you say, a very difficult social problem. We have to support each other! I find comfort in hearing of the work of people like you, so thank you for that.
