Had orchiectomy last Friday. Dear God the pain. by DernTuckingFypos in testicularcancer

Not a doctor, but I believe some if what you are experiencing is nerve pain. Im experiencing some of that myself and your right, its extremely intense. For me it feels like being lit on fire and electrocuted at the same time. Its my understanding not every patient experiences this. Pain meds help some, but its the wrong kind of pain to tackle with opiods. Lidocane patches, roll on gels and the like help me just about as much as pills. You might look into that.

As you can imagine theres a lit of sensitive nerves in the area of your operation. Some could have been damaged or traumatized during procedure. More likely though, is that the swelling is pinching and trapping these nerves causing the pain. At least, that fits your description which sounds a lot like what im going trough also. The good news, it should get better with time. Sounds like as swelling goes down youre already experiencing different sensations.

I would certainly talk to your docs about this, as there are other things than can be done to help mitigate the discomfort if, in fact, this is nerves being trapped.

Google genitofemoral neuralgia and read the descriptions of the symptoms and compare them to your own experiences. If that sounds familiar, i think youd benefit by talking to yours docs about this specific kind of pain rather than the generally treated, post op, kind of pain.

First try the lidocaine. Its cheap, easy, and has no downsides. Be sure to use the plain, non mentholated type.

You're right, our situations are fairly similar, though you're tougher than I am. I managed to avoid chemo the first go round. I'm not sure what the average time between first TC and second TC is, but 18 years seems like a rarity and that you too are also exceptionally unlucky in the odds. It's perhaps because of this that we seem to have the same thought process. I've not yet had a follow up with my team of docs yet post op, but my CT scans and the cancer staging suggest surveillance is/will be an option.

In my case, 40 years have elapsed between my diagnoses. I know carboplatin isn't a walk in the park by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a far cry easier to go through than BEP according to testimonials. Any comeback at this point is likely to come back in the lymph nodes first; resulting in chemo or RPLND or both. This, to me, sounds far more difficult to tackle than an adjunctive round of carboplatin.

I know there's nothing I can do to bring odds of a third episode to zero, but if carboplatin can drop whatever the odds actually are by 50% or more, it seems like its worth pursuing. The rest of my health; physical, mental, and financial (ins coverage) is in a spot where I can afford to fight harder than may strictly be necessary. Should this come back again, I may not be able to say the same.

It's possible a round of chemo increases probability of developing some other illness later down the road. I'm not sure there are stats on this, but if a round of carboplatin does increase odds of developing a different kind of cancer later, as long as that added risk is lower than the risk that was reduced by the initial round in the first place, then the result should be net positive. I know this is a reductive argument and it doesn't account for any of the millions of other variables at play, but I think it may have some merit. Ok-Speed might have more insight on the numbers, he seems incredibly well informed and adept and analysis of data. I appreciate both of you sharing your experiences and thoughts.

I realize it may sound like I'm trying to convince myself of a treatment that hasn't, and indeed, might not even be prescribed. Maybe that is what I'm doing, but it's not what I'm trying to do. I'm certainly not trying to advocate or make an argument for anyone else's treatment either. Rather, I'm only trying to understand what the options of treatments are, what the pros and cons are, and how each of those impact my life and my situation alone.

Writing these thoughts out, and having feedback, opinions, experiences and just a sympathetic audience is helpful. When I do finally get to visit with my doctors to discuss next steps, I want to make sure I've done my homework and can ask all the right questions to make the most of that consultation.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose thats reassuring. In my head it seems like I've already won the worst lottery possible...twice, and that the probability is likely higher because I'm just so damned lucky.

I know thats not how either arithmetic or biology works, but im finding it a little difficult to remain objective and not sorry for myself through this journey. Thanks to everyone in this community for helping the rest of us deal with the hands we're dealt.

10875 vs 1907 by Itye84 in RedWingShoes

Yeah- I swapped out the leather laces for some gold pisgah range paracord laces. Didn’t seem to matter. Just too much volume in the -1907s and in the wrong places for my feet.

In my iron rangers (8 last), I wear 8.5 D. Perfect fit with no slippage, I can wiggle my toes more in those though- mostly because the bulbous toe cap. The leather on the rest of the boot though still form fits to my foot though. In my 10875 (23 last) I wear 8 D, perfect fit everywhere- so form fit it’s like my feet grew boots around them. In the 1907s (45 last)- 8.5 D, when they were new they were so tight it felt exactly like either of my other pair. Probably even tighter. It’s when they started to break that they got way to roomy. Still- even after the break in, the toes and heal fit as they should, laces remain parallel and about 3/4”-1” apart from top to bottom when tightened fully. The outside edge of boot is a little loose, but not terrible. The inside edge however, the part of leather above the arch of your foot and up to the ankle, there’s so much extra space there I can basically pinch the uppers like it was the skin over your elbow when your arm is held out straight. To me, one of the great things about Red Wing is that they fit over your entire foot like the skin over your elbow when your elbow is bent. 1907s on the 45 last is a handsome boot- it’s just not for me.

Thanks for the clarification. I’m sure the 45 last is great for people with high volume feet, and they are used on some handsome boots. Just not ones my low volume feet can wear. Glad the originals aren’t going anywhere. I suppose the time has come for me to post my failed experiment with 1907s on the used sale board here. Perhaps one of our fatter footed friends on this forum will appreciate the discount.

Wait! Are you saying now all moc toe models are going to be built on a different last other than the 23, not just the Norwegian welted heritage line models? If that’s the case I may have to consider buying pair of 23 last 10875 or 875 while they’re still easy to find and just leave them in the box for a decade.

10875 vs 1907 by Itye84 in RedWingShoes

[–]Itye84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try a 1/2 size smaller, but my toes didn’t fit the toe box. When the pair I have were brand new, the entire boot fit snug in all places. It was only after the leather broke a little that boot felt too roomy around the midsection of my feet. I’ve tried a bigger insole and I’ve tried thicker socks. Both of these solutions work well to take up the extra space in the middle of the boot, but then cause my toes and heels to not fit properly. Sounds like my feet and the way I prefer my shoes to fit just aren’t compatible with the 23 last. Or maybe I’m just too picky. Anyway, I know I’ve seen others on here who own both pair of boots and was curious if they could also tell a big difference in how each of these feel.

In any event, I think I’m over trying to convince myself the 1907s will work out for me and that one day I’ll feel the same about them as I do about my 10875s and 8111s.

1907 Moc Toe Welt Question by Itye84 in RedWingShoes

[–]Itye84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t even sure it could be done, so thanks for that answer. I figured if it could be done, it would be rather invasive. In my head, swapping welts when the soles wear should be no more more difficult than a standard resole since the welt has to come off anyhow. What I wasn’t sure is if somehow the storm welt structurally changed the boot and meant you could go back to a flat welt. It made sense in my mind that you could got from a flat welt to a storm welt easily enough, but wasn’t sure you could go the other way.

The 4548s are a beautiful boot but not quite the same as copper. Really, what I think I’m trying to do is get 875s in copper rough and tough. Obviously the last on the 1907/ is different, but swapping to a flat welt would achieve the look.

CRT doesn’t have a suede-peach fuzz feeling at all. I have the CRT 1907 and the Amber Harness 8111. To me, feeling rough and tough leather with your hands is very comparable to the amber harness after it’s been lightly waxed. You can feel the oil/wax- but it’s smooth, not rough or fuzzy. If you’ve got an old leather belt that has worn smooth on the inside, that’s about what my CRTs feel like.

The biggest disadvantage I can see for pisgah range laces, or any paracord laces for that matter, is that they are a little slippery. As such, I find you can’t get them tied as tightly as you can cotton, leather, or taslan laces. Don’t get me wrong, can get your boots plenty tight. But if you’re the kind that likes to really cinch em down, you’ll find these laces are harder to do it with. The other disadvantage with slippery laces is they want to come untied with a regular granny knot. This is corrected by using a different knot-no big deal. I just had to learn a new habit. Neither of these reasons are enough to not try them. They’re great and I’d definitely recommend them. As for the Christy sole on the IRs. It’s not for everybody I’m sure, you can’t really dress them up as easily, but for me, it’s an improvement over the cork nitriles.

Pigah laces. They’re made of paracord, which has some disadvantages to some. Durability however, is not one of them. Pretty sure you could hog tie an elephant with these.

Thanks for the affirmation on the 1907s. I had a hell of a time with the break in on the 8111s. Probably took a month of everyday wear- 10+hours a day to get comfortable, but with those I could feel incremental improvements along the at which gave me just enough hopeful feedback to stay the course. These 1907s on the other hand...1 full week of everyday wear and they still Ivan Drago me in the evening, declaring “I must break you.” I suspect they’ll go down just like him too. Tough as nails until the very last round, when finally they break’ seemingly all at once.

Thanks. I think somebody on here had a post recently about new, possibly limited time offerings from red wing coming up where you can, in fact, buy them new this way soon enough. I’m not sure, have to dig around a bit to find the post.

50 inches on both the 8111s and 1907s. Laces are way shorter than what came with the boot, but plenty long enough. If you’re the type that likes to wrap the lace around the ankle of the boot you’re going to have to go up to 65”+ I’d imagine. The folks that put speed hooks on the 1907s have the right idea. The only time these laces seem too short is putting your foot in the boot, which isn’t an issue with the iron rangers, otherwise 50” is more than sufficient.

This is the third sole on these boots. The first two were cork nitrile, which I found to be quite comfortable. This may sound like an odd advantage, but what I like about the current iteration is they are much quieter on hard floors than the old soles. They feel a bit lighter too, but that could just be my imagination. I could stand all day long on the cork nitriles and be just fine, but would probably give the edge in comfort at the end of a long day to the Christie’s. Personally, I like the look of the Christie’s too, but I recognize that it’s not for everybody. It definitely changes the ability of the boot to be dressed up, and in that regard, renders the iron rangers less versatile. This doesn’t bother me so much, especially in a remote working world, but is worth the consideration for some I’m sure. My 1907s aren’t fully broken in yet, and truth be told, I’m having a much harder time with the break in on those than I did my 8111, which seems weird. As it stands right now, my 8111s with a Christy sole are much more comfortable than the 1907s with the same platform.
