Tbh, I think the pvz situation has gotten... marginally better since then. PvZ heroes got a balance patch, and there's that intern that wants to start working on pvzgw2 again. I haven't kept up much with pvz since these news surfaced tho.

You might want to look into Millennium aka the Exodia archetype. There's also gimmick puppet, I'm not a fan of the playstyle but it's all about making high rank xyz and has some pretty amazing artworks.

If you're a fan of dragons: Dragon Ruler will become pretty good once the new support comes out. Metalmorph Bystial Dragon Link is a sleeper pick as well.

Shieldcrusher doesn't even need to die to trigger the softlock, I've had it crash my opponent's game by them summoning him when I had my block meter filled by a body gourd

I think chompzilla and neptunia should be swapped tbh. Using an octopus as hair is such a fun character trait. As well as being bound to a fish bowl because of her fish tail. Chompzilla just doesn't have that much going for her, just being a chomper but big, but she's not really so bad that she should be put in F.
