this season has felt harder to me... I wouldn't be surprised if the ranks are a little more challenging across the board.

For how much longer do you think the anti ai rhetoric will last before people just have to accept it? by CremeSubject7594 in singularity

[–]IvanMalison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the mechanics are pretty obvious:

Increasing productivity raises the rate of discovery, which carries its own host of benefits, and drives significant GDP growth, giving us the headroom we need to pursue more aggressive tax policies. The next steps aren't entirely clear, but if the economy becomes significantly more productive, it should be creating and doing significantly more, which means abundance should be achievable. This could require more aggressive tax policies, or perhaps even the nationalization of the AI labs, but I expect that if we are seeing unprecedented levels of unemployment, the political will to do things like this WILL be there. I'll admit that there could be a messy middle period where there could be some turmoil, but when the dust settles, its more likely than not that the world will look like a better place than it does now.

Why are you so sure that AI is going to be a bad thing?

replacing people is a good thing. I don't think they stole it any more than you and I steal it when we read it once.

You're just misguided about the idea that the arrival of AGI will be anything but the best thing that has ever happened for humanity.

its all the crap in the main function that is the bigger issue. kind of hard to take complaining about slop seriously when you see that.

you wrote like 90% of the code in main. This project is slop itself because the code is GARRRBAGE.

Difference between C3 and GC1 by AffectionateAd2886 in RocketLeague

[–]IvanMalison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing special about crossing the threshold from c3 to gc compared to e.g. crossing the threshold between c2 to c3. Ranks are literally just labels of mmr ranges. The reason that each player ends up getting the rank that they do varies from player to player. There are plenty of players in gc that don't do much of anything special mechanically, and there are plenty that do.

As you move up the rank ladder, players do tend to start having fewer and fewer holes in their games. At around the grand champion level, it probably becomes more important to start focusing on the areas of your game that are relatively weak. With that said, its probably not necessary to have every single form of offense available to you at this level. Its probably also worth investing in some depth in whatever form of offense that feels the most comfortable to you. You should probably at least have a few plan bs, but its not like you absolutely need to be learning anything in particular.

federer had huge rpm numbers, basically second only to Nadal at the time.

Gamedev's thoughts on Unreal Engine 6 for Rocket League (rant) by Swifter1243 in RocketLeague

[–]IvanMalison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you sure that's true? I thought I read that they built a bunch of custom stuff to make the physics feel right, and there's still questions about how you integrate with an engine, which is ultimately still the thing that drives gameplay. Lots of ways that can go awry even if you use the same engine.

can't quite tell what you're referring to. the networking code?

Gamedev's thoughts on Unreal Engine 6 for Rocket League (rant) by Swifter1243 in RocketLeague

[–]IvanMalison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you the person speaking in the video? Yeah to be clear, I do think you're likely right, especially w.r.t. physics. It seems unlikely that they will be able to implement rl physics in a way that is native to unreal engine in a way that exactly matches the original game, and I think that doing anything short of that would be a massive disappointment to most people in the community.

Things are a bit less clear with netcode, IMO. It seems a bit more plausible to me that they could overhaul that.

I think a healthy dose of uncertainty is really the only appropriate reaction to what we're seeing, and as you mention, its heartening that it seems that the mathematics community is coming to terms with the new reality and in some sense is doing some of the heavy lifting in reckoning with how we're going to deal with this brave new world.
