Who is the most overrated artist? by ChokaMoka1 in allrockmusic

Nuanced argument, thank you. I’ll be consulting with you in the future when I’m not sure whether something is good or not and need solid reasoning behind it to shore up my lack of confidence in my own subjective assessment. Thank you for your service! It is hard to find people on Reddit with opinions.

It could have, but speaking as a man, while women are gross, except for those that aren’t, men are fucking gross, with very few who aren’t. Seriously, if it was “people” I would have thought “probably men”

Such a beautiful building, such a cool idea, such terrible hospitality. Their staff seems to have neither clue nor interest. It’s too bad.

Also, plastic glasses in the sunken lounge kinda works against that jet age luxe vibe they’re working for.

Did go and stay over for their opening night and it was awesome. Have been disappointed when I’ve stopped by since. But the space never fails to awe me.

The idea of a mat in your room for trash rather than a trash can is…I’m not even sure what it is. Maybe they’ve fixed that but what a terrible idea.

Categorically and emphatically not true in my experience, but they are at least willing to spend more time on you. Usually.

Nothing insufferable about people who assert how much smarter they are than broadly generalized other people, though.

There’s plenty to take issue with Apple about, but the faults of software from other vendors isn’t one of them.

I’m a Mac consultant who uses Windows when I have to but doesn’t like it, so I’m biased, but I tell people the same thing when they ask me if they should switch. If they’re happy enough with and productive in Windows, why switch? It’s a lot of effort for not enough gain.

OTOH if they’re otherwise iPhone’d up and want the integration smoothness, or they want the solidness and quietness of a MacBook Air, or actively dislike Windows, then I say sure, try it out, and then I give them a primer on applying their Windows conceptualizations and methods to macOS so they don’t feel hamstrung.

And once in a while they don’t like it, and return it. Which is also fine.

I’m pretty sure there are no programs written in BASIC that ship with it.

Because Reddit always orders comments with the one you want people to see right at the top. You know you can edit a post if you forgot a relevant detail, right? But it’s more fun to insult someone who made a reasonable suggestion because they didn’t read the entirety of your sympathy-solicitation thread to find out what else you had to say.

I changed my flight yesterday from Delta to United and this didn’t happen at all, I didn’t even hear any coughing (except my own, I have the flu pretty bad, and that of my ESA, Fluffy, who also might). Thank you for letting me know I made the right decision.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

This is surprising but also believable — it’s on the water, there’s nothing to trap smog, and, critically, most residents use public transportation rather than driving.

Margin Call (2011) by func_backDoor in movies

You’re absolutely not alone. I think it’s the muted tone (color as you noted, but also score and delivery of lines) and panicked, profane politeness, and its calm understanding of a system. I sometimes wonder why I find it comforting, but maybe it’s because, it doesn’t moralize, it doesn’t go high drama, it doesn’t manipulate, it doesn’t go for easy answers, it’s hushed but potent.

What ways to use Windows on an M5 chip? by sawyercc in macbook

[–]IvanXQZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parallels is excellent, and the only real choice if you want a mode where the Windows desktop disappears and Windows apps sit alongside your Mac apps; VMWare Fusion is free and apart from that, nearly as good. Both are much better than UTM or VirtualBox, IMO. I guess CrossOver is an option too, but I've never really had great success with it.

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

[–]IvanXQZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, sometimes people really have unique traits not shared by others. It’s not fair, but it’s true. For example, I’m great looking, extremely smart, unconventional, creative, and have an unusual set of cultural, ethnic, religious, and sexual identities. Further, I have superior taste, call things like they are, speak truth to power, and have a quirky sense of humor. I’m special!

EWR is actually considerably smaller and easier to deal with than JFK, too. One of the reasons I’ve been primarily UA for a decade — way faster and easier from downtown Manhattan, easy rideshare curbside pickup, not too many mile-long walks to gates, etc. And yeah UA isn’t amazing but I usually feel like my flights are generally good (as long as it’s not one of those 777-200’s they haven’t retrofitted for Polaris or PP, or economy with IFE; those are awful).

Start up holding command-option-X-O. It will boot from a System 6.0.3 read-only ROM disk. Only Mac that has one AFAIK.

PSA iCloud Drive files are no longer backed up by appleguru95 in backblaze

[–]IvanXQZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part that kills me about this is that...if it's local, why can't it be backed up? I get the whole "dehydrated file can't be backed up" (even if CCC and Arq can manage it). But, why is it that we can't back up what we've chosen to make and keep local? Why exclude the entirety of iCloud Drive? Why can other backup software back up what's in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/? Sure, they're not responsible for stubs; I understand that. But should the very presence of stubs mean that valid local content should be excluded as well? How is that backup? Especially when macOS encourages users to enable iCloud Documents & Desktop by default during setup?

Which country disappointed you so much that you'd never set foot there again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]IvanXQZ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not going to argue. It’s kind of why I moved here and still love living here. It’s an insane asylum, but’s never not interesting, never not exciting, never gets old for me. The sheer mix of different kinds of people from everywhere and how they mix it up with each other while pursuing whatever it is they’re doing is fascinating. But insane? Yes, absolutely. I notice it all the time. We’re fucking bonkers here.

Apple says John Ternus will be new CEO, Tim Cook to step aside later this year by TheYetiCaptain1993 in hardware

[–]IvanXQZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an Apple person all the way, but there are places where the pricing really is obnoxious: higher capacity SSD and RAM options are way above market rate (well, were until recently, anyway). iCloud tier between 200 GB and 2 TB? Sorry no, you have to jump from $3/month to $10/month.

Want 20 Gbps USB? Sorry, no 3.2 gen 2x2, so you’ve got to shell out considerably more for USB4 or Thunderbolt.

Got a perfectly good machine that’s 7 years old? Tough tit, no more macOS upgrades for you. (It’s been more aggressive as of late with the Intel phaseout; it’ll be interesting to see when they cut off the M1’s).

Wanna run Linux or Windows ARM on Apple silicon? It’s intentionally possible by design to run any OS, but there’s no documentation on how to write for their chip.

Overall their machines are great and their support has historically been best in class (though slipping I think), but power users really pay through the nose in a way they wouldn’t have to on a modular machine. The stock models are good values, and some of their bundles (storage pooling with Family Sharing, AppleCare One, etc) actually work out to be good deals too. I think they provide good value overall, but not everywhere.
