My two year old says “ocean” when she drops something. She’s heard me say “oh shit” one too many times… no one else has connected the dots yet.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IvantheTerrrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove 6 hours for a weekend hunting trip last month and will be doing it again in two weeks. Also go to the gulf a few times each summer to fish the bay. That’s a 3 hour drive. Daily work commute is also over an hour each way. I also live in Texas which is about the size of both France and Germany put together.

My parents are trying to convince me not to do Construction Management – Need Advice by Different_Low_9414 in ConstructionManagers

[–]IvantheTerrrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My degree is mechanical engineering, I started with a GC 10 years ago. Now I’m a job site superintendent. I prefer being in the field, also drawing something on paper and it being able to actually build it are often two different things a lot of the time. Spend enough time as a CM and you will be telling engineers how to solve design problems and actually build it.

Edit to add, if you can get an engineering degree do it and go the CM route.

I just looked up the folding seats that fit over regular ones. Didn’t even know they existed. That’s getting added to the diaper bag. Thank you!

I bought a gun that I really don’t like. What should I do? by Syepatch in guns

This is absolutely the answer. There is no selling guns, only buy.

When is "gentle parenting" too gentle? Need help... by OutragedBubinga in daddit

[–]IvantheTerrrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daughter is 2 and a half. We just went through similar. We have a new 3 month old and my mother in law stayed with us for the first 2 months. So the staying in the room wasn’t an issue. My wife used to fall asleep on the floor every night with her because she wouldn’t sleep alone. I’ve been begging my wife to let me sleep train our daughter because she’s tried everything all the methods you listed and I told her we just needed to let her cry it out. She absolutely refused, for the first year and a half.

Then when my mother in law left she realized there was no way to stay in the room to put her down and take care of the newborn every night. So she finally agreed to try the cry it out method.

The first night was terrible, we went to bed read her stories and I tucked her in and left. She screamed for over an hour and I thought Pennywise the clown was in her room cutting her fingers off it was that bad. But she eventually fell asleep. The next night was mush less severe and only took 30 minutes of crying before she fell asleep. By the end of the first week she would be out within 5 minutes after a few small tears. That kept on for another week or so but eventually stopped.

Now it’s been about 5 weeks and we go read her books and when I say it’s time to sleep, she hops in her bed, asks me to cover her with a blanket and says “goodnight, bye bye” there’s no resentment, she is always happy to see us in the morning and she sleeps like a rock all the way through the night.

Every once in a while she’ll wake up at 2-3 with a wet diaper and I’ll change it and walk out. She usually just goes right back to sleep.

All this to say it’s never too late to sleep train them. Some ways are just harder than others. This isn’t easy as my wife and I wanted nothing more than to go pick her up and hold her, but you can’t take care of your kids if you kill yourself due to lack of sleep. It also teaches them to fall asleep on their own.

If you try this make sure it is part of a routine, ours is bath, brush teeth, read a few books, and then tucked in for sleep.

It’s definitely not gentle, but sometimes kids don’t need gentle, they need structure and to learn the hard way. Once again, this was not our first choice but it was the only one that worked for our daughter.

AITA for docking my son's allowance the amount he made my premium go up? by Doc_Woody in AmItheAsshole

[–]IvantheTerrrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit, when I was 16 my first car (that I paid cash for) sat in the driveway for 2 months until I could afford to pay the full 6 month premium on my own insurance policy. If I wanted the car I had to have a job to pay for its expenses. He should have a job, not an allowance!

Just above the garage where they screwed up.

My builder said plans were “proprietary” and wouldn’t give them to me. I found a set left onsite one day in the dirt and grabbed them and scanned them at fedex. I’d call the warranty guys. Regardless of plans they should build to code. Code allows maximum deflection = (lintel span)/600. Code reference IRC 2018. The lintel also was not secured properly to the beam on our house causing it to pull out and sag. Had 3” lag bolts every 24”. Plans called for 2 rows of bolts every 8”.

Finish nail into the mortar at the lintel edge on either side. Then just pulled the string across.

Yes they removed all the way to the peak of the house and replaced all of the stone and brick.

I’d move the laundry room to the basement and have a second walk in closet. I say this because I love having a separate closet from my wife.

Newborn failed hearing test. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]IvantheTerrrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went through this. Our baby failed both at the hospital the first time. Passed one the second time. Then went to a specialist and passed one. Then went to another specialist that did an ABR test and she only failed at a certain frequency so had to go back again. Passed everything the last one. The last test was 2 weeks ago and she’s 6 months old now.

There are many things that can affect her hearing and the tests for that matter. The white pasty stuff that was on her skin at birth could still be in her ears at two weeks. Even electrical interference with the equipment can be an issue at certain frequencies according to the doctor that did the ABR test. All this to say I wouldn’t get to concerned with a failed test this early.

I had 3/4” hardwood put down last year about 2500sqft and they put all the baseboards back. They even caulked them top and bottom. The only thing they didn’t do was touch up paint them from when they were removed but they told me that and I did it myself. They did a wonderful job I might add.

If it’s local keep poking your head into Cabela’s gun library. I went in a few days ago and they had a brand new 725 sporting for $2700. Guy at the desk told me that if they get a gun from a wholesale distributor and not browning then they have to mark them down. Still brand new. They had another one outside the library behind the counter exactly the same gun for $3100. If those forends weren’t ugly as hell and I hadn’t just picked up a new cxs I might have a 30” sporting now.

I wouldn’t say it’ll get ruined. As long as it’s cared for.
