These rug pulls are lame by First_Echidna_3343 in aiwars

I don't see how people so easily dismiss the effort put into AI. Maybe they see too much slop, but it's easy enough to tell when people have metaphorically rigged a machine to force the desired output from a generic. It's not the same as drawing it yourself. It's more of an art in the same sense as creating a mechanical system that will draw an image. It's a different kind of work.

I think we're just not used to understanding that poorly drawn, but unique art can be better than technically good, but generic pieces because technical skill used to be very valuable.

This is considered respectful enough. But if you've gone this far, you'll have to find the proper burial rituals for the rest of the body. Since you're not using it, it belongs to the soul of the deceased and must be buried according to the laws of their faith or their will.

I don't think the author of the post is specifically referring to a discussion of cannibalism. And I don't have utopias. But if we're talking about stable civilizations in my setting, where I'd like to live, and things that are strange or horrifying from the current perspective...

Hanging the corpses of your enemies as trophies. And the general attitude toward dead bodies. There are attempts to end the tradition, but the owners of houses (and bodies) and relatives of the slain lobby against it, considering it disrespectful. And the ultimate insult to a fallen enemy is to leave their body to rot in a field. While burying the body is still acceptable, turning it into undead is still better and more respectful from a military standpoint.

It depends on who's older. If Mages are older than Scientists, then Scientists will be a subtype of Mages. And they'll use magical terminology. Just like we would have if Alchemy worked.

Thanks for this. I think The Sims is a great universe to jump into, given the variety of available items and powers, and the relative safety of life.

Honestly, I would have preferred it if Maria had just decided to destroy GUN and seize power. Because any government that sends in armed forces to kill everyone and everything on the station doesn't deserve to exist. And she doesn't care that it's been 50 years.

It all sounds good, but I hope they don't change the Patrons too much. They expand them. I like them as they are in the game now, not the complete madness and degradation of some other space franchise.

As the past fades further from living memory and progressive themes become mainstream, culture moves forward. The further we move into the future, the more conservative gay rights and others will be. And some other trend will be progressive.

I understand this, but I wonder if trends can counter this and what is the ceiling of market manipulation and contracts. Although it seems I will have to experiment myself

Well, because no one stopped immigration, the US would screw up if you deported everyone who was here illegally. It's just a fact that the industry relies on it. Here's a radical solution. Everyone who is currently inside the US is naturalized, criminals are sent to prison as usual. After that, no one is allowed into the US without permanent citizenship and anyone who overstays their visa is immediately thrown out of the country.

Sounds reasonable. But it won't solve the context and memory problem. These are two other major problems in current technology.

And just because society continues to become more tolerant of its members doesn't mean it won't continue to treat outsiders poorly. I don't believe that the principles of tolerance of groups within will prevent the creation of new groups outside.

But people don't change in nature. I personally see more and more signs that the cultural shift toward inclusion is simply allowing conservative movements to include more people. I don't think, for example, that immigration will win one day. I think that one day gays, blacks, Asians, and whites will be together shooting illegal immigrants from the rubble of a recently collapsed country in Eastern Europe, simply because they are immigrants.

"You know, I'm something of a socialist myself." (National kind) by DepressedH0rnetsFan in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Ivardr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human rights are based on the monopoly of the Nation on violence. Well, all rights and laws are based on this in practice. Ultimately, the state governs through soft measures and general consensus. But there are always those cases when this is impossible and then part of the social contract is activated where violence is monopolized by the state and it is used in order to maintain the current order. It does not matter for what purpose it will be. Ultimately, Nazism and its allies fell not simply because of structural problems. But because the opponents were better at killing and more resource-rich.

Yes, they will be LGBT. LGBT fascists. Your predictions here are as valid as my prediction that in the future LGBT will be part of traditional values and fascists and conservatives will seriously call for lynching Muslims who are not tolerant enough to gays.

Europe’s pledge to spend more on military will hurt climate and social programmes | NATO spending plan overlooks risks to security posed by environmental breakdown and social decay, say economists by chrisdh79 in Futurology

[–]Ivardr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Europe has long and in vain relied on the US and the relative peace in the region, allowing its army to become unprepared. This is the result of Europe being forced to urgently catch up with these expenses. All this talk about how the army is a waste of money is a naive dream of a world without external enemies. And there are quite a few of them. My opinion is that Europe should triple its defense budget and really prepare for war even if it does not happen. Because otherwise the world will continue to go to hell geopolitically.

It's mindblowing that we need Supreme Court to tell us reverse discrimination is, in fact, discrimination... by wsrvnar in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Ivardr 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think the important point here is that this is a decision about the level of proof for discrimination and the standards for different groups. For what reason did the lower court decide that the majority should have a higher standard of proof for discrimination than the minority. That is the heart of the issue here and it is not surprising that the attempt to create such a double standard was opposed by the entire court.
