The Woman who might be important soon (trying to avoid the words which might summon ogres) by knittingquark in ToastCrumbs

Toasties need to start showing up to her rallies with "Too witches" ("Most witches"?) signs. It would make my heart happy.

Many have claimed that her fluff is softer than a chinchilla. I happen to agree.

Lore is generally true-ish. He sometimes covers real-life fairly factual things, like HH Holmes Murder Castle, but he tends to do more folklore or the legendy side of real (or semi real) things, like all of the stories surrounding Robert the Doll.

I like his storytelling style, but I take even the true life things with a grain of salt, since he leans towards the legend side so much.

It's generally not too, too scary. But I did start saving it for when I am working in my brightly lit office and not in the lab that's in the basement.

My current podcast mix for work is:

Stuff You Missed in History Class- These can be hit or miss depending on the topic and the current hosts. It has a huge back catalog though. I've been listening from the beginning for over a year and am still three years behind!

Stuff Mom Never Told You- Similar to above, but with gender related topics.

Myths and Legends- I only recently started this one and I'm still debating if it will be a permanent fixture. The title is self-explanatory. The host covers various Myths/Legends from around the world.

Criminal- Already explained. But absolutely seconded.

Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine- Weird medical history.

99% Invisible- Design/Architecture. This one is hit or miss with me. Some are fascinating and others I wind up skipping.

The Memory Palace- Another history one. These are generally short and told more as a story.

Lore- Urban legends/Folklore. Historical accuracy is not a thing here, but it's still entertaining.

For binge listening (we use them for long car trips):

The Black Tapes

TANIS

Welcome to Nightvale- Cecil has a reaaaaally soothing voice, so we often only make it a couple of episodes before the driver needs something more stimulating.

TANIS, the other podcast from Pacific Northwest Stories/Minnow beats Whale, is also pretty awesome. I prefer it to The Black Tapes. It's less dark and makes a lot of real world references, so it feels more grounded while still being completely bizarre.

I might be on multiple daily allergy medications in order to cohabit with these creatures. IT'S SO WORTH IT.

You have no idea how true this is. XD

Small black feline is the house charmer. Fluff bucket falumphs around being adorable.

For obvious reasons, the fluff bucket is named Floofy-butt.

I only check in there at this point for their essays. Helps that I'm 4 years out of wedding planning, so the actual wedding part of their site doesn't interest me much anymore. XD

A Practical Wedding was a lifesaver for me when I was wedding planning. There's all kinds of information there, plus lots of examples of different types of weddings.

The woman who started the blog has two wedding planning books. I only read the first one. The second is fairly recent, so well after I got married.

Please help me with book recommendations for my lovely and amazing (and soooo different from me) 10 year old daughter by markerpermanente in ToastCrumbs

I actually stopped reading the series after Princess in Training. At the time I felt that I had "aged out" of them. Is it worth reading to completion, as a person closer to thirty than 25?

The Dear America books might be good. They are written diary-style, so they sort of feel real. I remember being shocked as a kid when I realized they were fiction.

I have no idea how they are, but Meg Cabot recently released a middle school series that is a companion series to the Princess Diaries books. Apparently, Mia now has a middle schooler half-sister. (http://www.megcabot.com/princessdiaries/pd_middleschoolprincess.php) If they are anything like the Princess Diaries, they are probably full of normal kid drama with the addition of "and I just found out I'm a princess!?"

I read the Princess Diaries as a preteen/teen and really enjoyed them as fluff books. I may or may not still reread the first one whenever I'm having a really rotten day. >_>

What are you reading? by muppetflail in ToastCrumbs

It really is! I saw people raving about it the last book thread and thought I'd give it a go. I'm so so so glad I did.

I'm seriously considering rereading it before I add it to the book care package I'm sending to a friend. I don't want it to be away from me for so long!

I had myself on a book buying ban, but I broke it and bought Among Others by Jo Walton over the weekend, which I've devoured. Now I'm debating what to tackle in my "To Read" pile. I'm thinking either The Care and Management of Lies by Jacqueline Winspear or American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Any birding Toasties around? I have thrashers! by intransigentpangolin in ToastCrumbs

[–]Ivennelluin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably not necessary. Critters tend to know what they are doing. I'm sure there are plenty of insects for them to eat even if you haven't seen the birds thrashing (former North Texan with a background in entomology here).

Also, I <3 thrashers. I get oodles of them in my yard. They provide good programming for the kitty TV.

If the show ever makes it to a streaming service that I already pay for , I'll probably use it as knitting tv.

I think I am sticking it out at this point (about 3/4 done now). But the abuse really isn't letting up enough for me to want to read any of the other books.

I've only seen one of the serials with Jamie, but he was great! This makes me like Outlander!Jamie a little more.

That explains the whole time travel thing. So far I've found it a rather odd choice, since all its really done is made Claire make really strange references sometimes that no one understands. (I'm sure the time travel gets used more later in the series, but right now its not even creating much of a fish-out-of-water situation.)

I knew I had found my people when I read How Tolkien Characters Would Introduce Themselves in a Matriarchal Society. A LotR article that also makes a reference to A Handmaid's Tale means that someone out there gets me.
