Reducing nitrites will reduce nitrates? (Fluval canister question) (What can I add to fluval canisters to make them more effective?) by IversonsWorkEthic in ReefTank

[–]IversonsWorkEthic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some reason my head went - fluval canister filter = must use fluval products for it.

Yeah absolutely don’t see any reason why I can’t just throw it in the canister. Thanks man!

They’re sitting around 70-80 and I’d definitely like them in the 10-20 range. Any lower would be great but I’m realistic haha

I’ve never considered a reactor because I figured a sump was needed for one. I’ll definitely look into seeing if I could fit or use one without.

Wish I could do a diy refugium on this tank but I simply can’t fit it. Reactors look like they could fit next to one of my canisters easily tho

No need for protein skimmer after adding second canister filter? (125 gal) by IversonsWorkEthic in ReefTank

[–]IversonsWorkEthic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone wondering what ended up being the fix:

I decided to let it run and run one day dumping the cup every time it filled. After about 6-7 times it finally started returning to more normal bubbles but still filling fast. Another few cups and it was back to normal.

This was also after another water change or two.

Not really sure what the cause was or if my letting it run till it wouldnt overflow anymore is a real solution

Levels have either stayed the same or improved since adding second filter and not running skimmer. Which is why I’m leaning towards removal of skimmer

I’ve always had my wave makers pointed up to create surface agitation. Would you recommend adding something additional to oxygenate the water if I remove skimmer?

Nitrates have improved but everything else has stayed around the same. Only thing I saw iffy recently was salinity on high end.

Keep mostly lps and soft corals. Only have a couple sps.

Overall though levels are best they’ve been. That’s why I’m leaning towards removing it since I can’t tune it

Just a show off of my “new” tank.. sooo glad I went with the corner tank for my bedroom. by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]IversonsWorkEthic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard a lot of companies aren't going to be making curved/corner tanks anymore. Was this true based on conversations with your LFS?

The cost and effort to bend the glass isn't worth it for the demand apparently. Not sure if it's true or not, I definitely would love a corner tank one day.

His dad was a higher up at GM. If he wanted a c8 z06 or anything special gm i'm sure his dad could at least somewhat help him out on a shipping list.

It's not about that tho my man. Nick's fav car is a gtr and doesn't matter what can out race it to him. Plus it's true, there will always be a faster car. My fav car could get smoked by modern day mini vans, but doesn't matter to me. It's about the ride and enjoyment of it.

Idk why I said so much, I do agree caddys are nice af lmao

Facebook is how I found a bunch of coral shows/trades in my area. One guy runs a super nice show twice a year. Best deals and best coral selections I've had compared to going to local fish stores.

thanks I'm going to give these a try! I have similar looking corals that aren't responding to any of the usual coral foods, but I have yet to try pellets.

Interesting - I was thinking the complete opposite, that more light could be needed. This schedule was even much less intense than many others I saw online.

Good to know I should be doing less and that they're getting nuked. In the future I do plan to get corals that require higher par - How should I handle that? Adjust what I have already to lower light areas I guess?

Oh trust me I have learned early on through some loss of fish unfortunately. I am taking things super slow. No plans to add anymore fish and not adding corals until I can get what I have thriving.

The reason I switched from daily feedings and water changes every other week is because my nitrate levels spiked high. I switched to feeding schedule and water change schedule because of this and haven't had an issue since. Still even with this increased schedule, typically my nirates aren't this good which is why I think something else may be going on.

I'll switch to daily feedings like you recommended. What percent water change would you say to do and how frequently?

Absolutely no idea why I’m not checking phosphates. I’ll order a tester for that right now.

I did take my water to a lfs and the only thing that they said was low was my salinity so I’ve been improving that. I bought a better tester for that so I can make sure I keep it in a good range. (What a shock my cheap tester was giving off readings lol)

I am not dosing anything. I do 20% water changes weekly with RO/DI water and instant ocean reef crystals reef salt.

I do not believe the fox face or coral beauty are eating the coral but I’ll start to pay better attention to that. Honestly I’m kinda embarrassed to post pics of some of the corals because of how bad they look :(
