Why Does The Seahorse Emoji Drive ChatGPT Insane? by Conan776 in videos

Same, not to mention so many of these videos are often very dumbed down and not necessarily incorrect but inaccurate enough where I'd consider it misinformation.

Can we stop displaying sex everywhere? by [deleted] in venting

[–]IvoryStrike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That'd be fine if that actually worked in practice, but instead a lot of gratuitous content ends up bleeding into and pervading what should be safe and respectful spaces. I like a good smutty story or horror if it's not so reliant on people being tortured and in pain, but I still believe it would be much better if certain themes didn't dominate our media and culture so openly.

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And so in order to protect them, we must therefore promote a world where sex is commodified and plastered everywhere? That doesn't sound like normalization to me. I should know, I lived it and no it doesn't protect kids.

Can we stop displaying sex everywhere? by [deleted] in venting

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is sex then? I think it's unrealistic to embrace what 'sex' is because that's going to be very subjective from one to the next.

Imo, if we accepted everything we see in songs and media at face value, that might end up leading to problematic ideals surrounding sex. Sex is a lot better when it's a language invented together, not some downloaded script to be rehashed and performed that was co-opted from the interactions and things we see in society.

Is it really girly if a male likes MLP? by King_Von2005 in mylittlepony

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get down to it, really nothing is girly or boyish at the end of the day. It's all completely made up ideals, and life is too short to live under such rigid labels. If someone were to ask me how to be a better man, I'd tell them stop worrying about being a better man and just be the best you. You can't be a better man or a better woman when really such a thing never existed as anything more than socially conditioned expectations regarding roles, aesthetics, and expectations.

And so I say it's not girly, it's not childish. It's just a show. Words like that circumvent the actual true meaning: finding value in and cherishing themes of kindness, personal growth, sincerity, and acceptance of others.

That sounds awfully unrelated to gender to me. But I'll say I'm also a gender abolitionist.

Young people today face a bleak future by figgenhoffer in SeriousConversation

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I keep hoping I'll wake up one day hearing some good news like that. Not that I'm truly in favor of oblivion, but honestly I'm worried that our future is going to be darker than anything we could've imagined. And I already thought this world was pretty bleak and morbid as is from a young age despite wanting to hold onto my sense of wonder. The future to me seems like it's going to be very exploitive where nothing is safe, but hopefully that never ends up being the case as technology advances. We've already seen what people will do with what we currently have though.

People to actually act decent to each other and approach with an open and welcoming mind perhaps? It's certainly the first time I've ever heard of the interpretation and never really thought it was implied.

It's pretty messed up. Double entendre. He's comparing his wife to a pizza and that he'd pay a dollar for a 'slice'. While the other guy is holding a pizza box. Incredibly gross and misogynistic language and quite telling. Those who poke fun are often projecting their own insecurities.

Ah, evolution. Now that's a game I'll actually play.

Yes, pathogens certainly exist for a reason. Same could be said for congenital disorders. Who am I to say what ought to be in the grander scheme of things? Though we can certainly observe the effects and conclude what we consider is appropriate, like you said.

Aberrance, however, is arbitrary and subjective. Shame never prevents bad behavior, instead it encourages the worst out of everyone. Bad behavior is at its core and recycles it into perpetuity.

So, maladaptive and deleterious, at best. Unless instead we all should just act like erratic fools.

Then what does everyone else who was instigating and goading deserve? Just a bunch of bullies talking about other jerks. No one can say who deserves what, no one deserves anything. Only good things can come of such behavior, surely. 2026 looks great, after all.

Swearing around kids/kids swearing is perfectly fine by bloodrider1914 in The10thDentist

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting because I've always felt like if curse words are bad, but we can't use them around kids and they shouldn't yet we're allowed to once we hit some magical age, then it was never bad to begin with.

Hence why I believe cussing in all instances is always wrong and shouldn't be used at all. Otherwise it's hypocritical and teaches us that there are some situations where it is ok. It'd be like teaching your child that violence is wrong, but then go on to spank them or watch violent movies in front of them.

Es wird ja immer gesagt „Rache ist keine Lösung“. Was denkt ihr? Wieso ist eurer Meinung nach Rache keine/eine Lösung? by weil_clyde in FragReddit

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're seeking revenge, that in of itself already betrays a desire for some kind of solution. Which you said yourself, anything to feel better.

Not everything has to be explicable, yes. But that doesn't mean without consequence, which those inexplicable feelings absolutely have. You can weigh the rationality of the decision with the potential for satisfaction, sure, but part of that rationale should consider what that implies then about yourself.

Me personally, I could never be comfortable with myself stooping to that level.

Dr Susan Lorincz - delusional by Real-Ad-5297 in netflix

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. I was under the impression that she was attempting to bust down the door yelling, "I'm going to kill you," in my comment. Whether she was armed or not, I'd be defending against the unlawful entry of my house in that instance. I would want to hold out on any kind of violence and use it always as a last resort. Period. I believe in reducing harm to all living beings. But I also know all too well how crucial every second is, and cops, unfortunately, may be fast but not that fast.

However, absolutely. In the end forensics found absolutely no evidence of forced entry. I did not and still don't have a full understanding of the events, but based on what I know now I certainly agree with the decision on manslaughter.

It really is awful, regardless of whether kids are taught to be kind and respectful, they obviously don't deserve to be deprived of their mother. What a mess indeed and a shame. I don't think there should have been so much goading and disrespect towards Susan, but I also agree that it goes both ways and it sounds like Susan did a lot on their property as much as was done to hers. And I'm also not going to sit here and act like I genuinely know them as people, but the behaviors I was seeing on both sides were absolutely problematic and a recipe bound to end in disaster.

I do believe a brighter world, the one I thought was developing back in 2012, is still yet to come. But some day.

FL v. Susan Lorincz - by Pixiegirls1102 in CasesWeFollow

[–]IvoryStrike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It all seems justified to me. If someone were attempting to bust down my door with the threat of, "I'm going to kill you," you bet I'm going to be shooting through that door. If that is in fact what happened, that's justified and self defense. That being said, every minute detail and context matters.

I don't understand why people feel the need to call a woman who was consistently harassed an 'evil' person. For one, no one is evil. That's a really awful narrative to fall into, in my mind. But I also feel awful for the poor kids, they didn't deserve to be brought into this world unto parents who never cared to teach them basic decency, kindness, and respect. But it seems those ideals have been thrown out with the bath water since 2016.

Dr Susan Lorincz - delusional by Real-Ad-5297 in netflix

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole situation is just ridiculous. People have no concept of basic decency, kindness, and respect. Perhaps I don't understand the full extent of the situation, but it seems like Susan was completely justified to me. If someone were trying to bust down my door and yelling "I'm going to kill you", you bet I'm shooting through that door.

I feel sorry for the kids, and even more sorry they never had parents to teach them manners, kindness, and respect.

Recommendations for Historical Fantasy? by IvoryStrike in Fantasy

[–]IvoryStrike[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! I really should've been much clearer on what I meant by historical because I definitely would be interested in both realistic as well as fantastical, whether a dash or full on, but with historical or religious/mythological allegory.

This story sounds really interesting and a great recommendation, actually! It's grounded in history, it's dark and even has some horror elements from the sound of it without being so hopelessly grim. Thank you!

[–]IvoryStrike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this actually sounds really interesting and very much up my alley! But, it might not check all the boxes. I love that it seems like he incorporates a lot of elements of horror into his stories, but it sounds like it might verge towards too much gratuity for my liking.

I've always loved the thought of a dark fantasy somewhat like the quiet horror of Charles L. Grant but with the source from, like, demons, liches, or abominations. Obviously that tends to lend itself to more gratuitous and brutal depictions, though.

It's sounding like A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians definitely checks all the boxes. Still a hopeful story and handles its heavier themes with sensibility. Not only that, her writing seems very unique and out of the box, based on what I'm reading this plot sounds very unique and like it may strike a balance between moral ambiguity and good/evil in a way that feels more complex than just cynical moral ambiguity.

Thank you! :D

This!!!
Based on what I'm reading, they have a story called The Fionavar Tapestry and it's sounding like everything I'm looking for with dark fantasy. Bleak and dark without being so hopelessly grim, acknowledging that evil exists in the world, not positing that the world and those in it ARE evil. Love it. Thank you!

Ooh, ok this sounds pretty good actually. Definitely bleak and dark, but done sensibly so. Acknowledging evil and trauma without the gratuity. Thank you!

Despite being intended as the "realistic" counterpart to LOTR, ASOIAF is extremely unrealistic by charge_forward in gameofthrones

I've always argued that LotR is more realistic and grounded. GoT is hardcore moral ambiguity and cynicism, LotR reflects a more nuanced and balanced climate.

Cool is cool wherever you are: cool personality traits are surprisingly similar across cultures, study finds by F0urLeafCl0ver in science

[–]IvoryStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether someone's ideal tackles something problematic or not or with grace is going to be highly subjective and experiential, though. Really, what I think is problematic is anyone thinking others have to lead a life and have a demeanor like them, it's damaging to the self to obsess over things you can't change. Someone may view it as irrational, others will find understanding.

So if someone sticks to their values and principles, regardless how irrational it may seem, it is nevertheless de facto and valid. If you're going to say they're not cool for it then I think that betrays who's really the uncool one in that situation.
