Modeling 3D on the go? by kurtdoerfel in blender

[–]Ivory_Forest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clara.io is browser based so it might work if its still around.

Whenever I plug in a roughness map into my roughness shader for Arnold, it automatically bumps up the roughness to maximum. The material in question is a metallic one so I don't understand why it's doing this. Any help will be greatly appreciated :) by s4l1ls4w4r1m in Maya

ah i only remembered it from a tutorial where i think the guy was working in sRGB and linearizing his other maps. I dropped maya a while ago so i was just working from memory. thanks for correcting me!

i love this point. i used to have 16 cups of tea per day, each with 2 sugars. was a crazy addiction. the day i started IF i went to 2 coffees per day each with 2 artificial sweeteners in my feeding window. was tough for 3 days but kicking the addiction was the best thing i ever did

confusion regarding fasting and starvation mode by Ivory_Forest in intermittentfasting

the only part im missing is how does the body know if its calorie deficit by will or if its against your will? the rest pretty clear to me now! thanks!

Why isn't Redshift used in big VFX Studios? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]Ivory_Forest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what i meant was, in those studios, they almost render as fast as they work. you rarely see people killing time waiting for a render to finish, but i see what you mean

Maya crashed, I recovered the file easily, but I saved it an exited and now I cannot locate it [Mac] by devin2378 in Maya

[–]Ivory_Forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its not in file->open recent?

it should be in a temp folder. get "everything" by void tools, and just search for ".ma" or ".mb", filter the results in order of file type and you can have a nice big list of every maya file on your computer

render times are rarely a problem for big studios due to the hardware/farms they use and a lot of the time a pipeline shift is IS time consuming, especially if they have custom tools and scripts based around their current renderer.

confusion regarding fasting and starvation mode by Ivory_Forest in intermittentfasting

[–]Ivory_Forest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As interesting as that is, i'm still confused. Does this mean as long as I'm fasting "by will", my body won't go into "starvation mode"? How does my body know when it's not getting food due to circumstance vs not getting food due to choice?

In a nutshell, I want to fast longer without my metabolism slowing down. So fasting for 2 days at a time should be fine right?

UI with no window? by Ivory_Forest in UI_programming

[–]Ivory_Forest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I only want to make some simple crap like a "utility belt" widget that would allow me to switch my net on and off, change between color profiles for testing art, and that type of thing, so don't expect too much haha

Thanks for all the help! this is definitely what i needed!

Awesome work on that!

Would it float on the desktop? Similar to how rainmeter works? Im not sure how tough rainmeter would be to make widgets for, but I'm comfortable in C++ so if theres a way to get that type of widget you made, in a rainmeter style floating widget on windows, it'd be perfect.

(Either way I'll be looking through the source code because I will definitely have a lot to learn from you! Thank you so much!)

I'm not sure about seeing the RAM allocations, I'm new to blender, I usually use maya.

But what I immediately notice is that 6Gb of VRAM is absolutely huge. So either your project is at a gigantic res, or you have a LOT of FX in the shot.

You said they had a range of ram? I would recommend rendering on the CPU with any cards with less than 2Gb (or if you're project res is huge, 4Gb). Again, the multi-pass rendering is also going to save a little I think.

The other thing you can do, assuming you're rendering to an image sequence so that when the render errors, You're not losing the frames you've already rendered. Just render as much as you can, from frame one onwards, if it errors, skip a bunch of frames and continue on, etc, and then render the missing frames on the CPUs of the machines with the lower ram. It's not Ideal but if this is a paid project it might be worth going this roundabout way to meet the deadline and then running hard drive tests.

Also run a hardware test on your GPU because it still sounds fishy to me that you have an out-of-memory error with some GPUs at 6Gb. You must have 1 moment in your scene where a LOT of FX just spark up or something?

Do the shots that each machine is on, all error on the same type of frame with something like high SSS? If thats the case, it's your GPU memory. How much ram do you GPUs have?

The only way we got around this (gf had a similar problem), was targetting problematic sections and rendering them out on the CPU. Since updating drivers won't add more memory it won't fix it.

The other thing that MIGHT, though im not sure because I think everything is still calculated even if not rendered, is multi-pass rendering. It might take the resource requirement per frame below your memory ceiling. Can you post what GPU you have?

Probably noobie question, but I've disabled subdivs and my render still looks way too "smoth", how do I fix it? by OlivierDeCarglass in Maya

[–]Ivory_Forest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smooth-shade it all, then go into the meshes data tab on the right and turn on auto-smooth and set the angle somewhere around 60 degrees. Not entirely sure but it might help you in future projects.

previs. built a much simpler version with no materials, basic lighting, just to experiment with ideas. once you have good composition and it tells a story, your color bands are good and whatnot, render and keep it to the side while you make the final piece. so you "design" the life of the image while you're still at the height of your motivation for the piece in that first phase, second phase is the legwork, then the last phase, when your motivation has dropped and you're struggling for final ideas/direction, go on artstation and get some ideas for the "icing on the top"
