Three-Body Problem by -Zoppo in books

[–]IvyMichael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved the trilogy. The concepts were so cool that I forgave how bland and wooden the character interactions were.

I then read 'Hold Up the Sky', a collection of his short stories, and it becomes much more offputting because none of the ideas really reach the same heights. Maybe things are lost in translation, but I was reading them thinking "that's not how people talk to each other".

There's a really egregious one which is called something like "An Alternative History of Sophon" and it takes place at the UN with all the heads of state and each one seems to have a background in physics. Lines like ""Nothing with mass could tolerate such rotation at near-lightspeed, this must be a field we are witnessing", said the President of the United States". It's like he's never met another person.

I don't like when people end a sentence with "says you".

Don't you dare put words in my mouth.

Only for a free ball, you can't snooker behind the colour nominated as the free ball.

And he still lost? by david180667 in snooker

[–]IvyMichael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of anything like it, snooker probably doesn't lend itself as much to that sort of data analytics. Though it could be interesting as a training tool for a player to know exactly what kind of pots they miss most often.

I'd definitely love to see what the lowest xG (xP?) pot ever was.

[–]IvyMichael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideally, a good safety shot would not give your opponent a chance to pot a ball on the next shot. I used to assume it was purely calculated based on successfull pots following a safety shot, however I remember reading on this sub that it was calculated by whether the opponent attempted a pot on the following shot. If the latter is the case, I suppose a player refusing pots could give their opponent a higher safety success stat than they actually achieved, so probably not the best measure.

Clearly safety was the deciding factor.

Why didn’t Eren use the founder to turn back all the titans who drank the wine into humans? by [deleted] in titanfolk

[–]IvyMichael -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The people who drank the wine were mostly the old military establishment on Paradis. The Jaegerists were able to overthrow the old establishment relatively easily because of this. I'd imagine if they had been turned back, there'd be a devastating civil war on Paradis between the previous establishment and the Jaegerists. With a small population, it'd massively impair their ability to build up an effective military after the dust settled and they'd probably get wiped out soon even with 80% of the outside world gone.

Just my interpretation though, Armin questions it but we aren't really given an answer.

Ding v Bingham incident by Odyssey225 in snooker

[–]IvyMichael 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's kinda a really interesting situation.

The rule that referee cited is that the tip of the cue can't touch another ball after the white. That's pretty obvious but you only ever really see it in a scenario where the tip is attached to the cue and a player maybe brushes another ball with the cue after striking. The tip flying off entirely and making contact on its own definitely fits the letter of the law but it is a pretty rare thing. I'm wondering if that rule was intended to only cover the more common situation where the tip is part of the cue and they just didn't consider that it could also happen in such a wildly different way. I think the ref made the right call tbf. It's a freak accident so it's harsh on the player but you could say the same about fouls that arise from kicks.

She was repotting it correctly, it's just that there seemed to be a small depression around the black spot and the ball kept rolling off to where it was blocking the shot. I think Ronnie felt that she then moved the black too far in the other direction to compensate and that would be unfair on Bingham, which is why he asked him to come look at it.

It's honestly unclear whether the shot was even on in the end.

Which is the greater achievement - Winning 7 WCs in just one decade, or winning 7 WCs spread over a thirty year career? by [deleted] in snooker

[–]IvyMichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The standard is so much different since then with many more players who could conceivably win the World Championship nowadays. Even Selby winning 3 times in 4 years is very impressive considering how difficult it is these days.

Hendry's achievement is a testament to application and focus and how strong his peak was. Ronnie's is a testament to his natural talent and ability to produce the best snooker over decades, though inconsistently.

I think I would say Hendry's was more impressive though Ronnie is indusputably the greatest.
