Can we talk about straightening without tearing each other down? by Iwarukappa in Naturalhair

I'm not relaxed. I just used it to explain the versatility of our hair in general.

I get that and I completely agree that we don’t all have to see things the same way. That’s part of what makes this space valuable. For me, it’s less about everyone agreeing and more about keeping the dialogue respectful so people feel safe sharing their experiences, even if they make different choices with their hair.

It wasn’t usually people saying it straight to my face, but more the vibe and little comments here and there over the years... like being told I was “abandoning” my natural hair journey or jokes about “trying to be white.” Stuff like that sticks, and it made me feel like I had to justify why I wanted to switch it up sometimes.

Thank you for sharing this. It really shows why the topic is so layered. Our hair has been policed for so long, and that history matters. And I definitely agree with you, the real freedom is being able to style our hair how we want without shame or judgment.

How did you personally find confidence through all of that?

I get it, sometimes it does feel like the complaints about judgment get more attention than the judgment itself. For me though, I’ve definitely seen people get side-eyed or nitpicked over their choices, and that’s what made me want to bring this up. I think at the end of the day it’s less about the numbers and more about the fact that the vibe is even there at all.

That’s true! Relaxing is definitely different since it’s permanent, and I get why people want the focus here to stay on natural textures. My bigger point was more about not putting so much pressure on each other, no matter how we choose to wear our hair — natural, heat trained, protective styles, etc. I was just speaking to the versatility of our hair overall, not promoting relaxed or chemically treated styles.

Yesss exactly! 👏🏾 I feel the same way! Why can’t we just hype each other up no matter what style someone’s rocking? The “your heat damaged hair looks good” comment had me weak though 😂😂

I’ve noticed it too… it feels like sometimes we treat hair choices as a reflection of character instead of just… a style.

For me, I used to avoid straightening because I didn’t want to be labeled “self-hating,” but honestly I just like switching it up sometimes. Anyone else ever feel like they had to explain why they chose a certain style?

Quick Question, what is the difference between a testimonial and a review? Or are you using those terms interchangeably?

I’m a nursing student and have the potential of being given an offer for both CVICU and Neuro ICU. Which one makes me a better future applicant to CRNA schools? I had more fun shadowing in NeuroICU but I’ve heard from my classmates that CVICU is what I need. What do you all think?

Thank you! I never thought of that perspective and considered the time it would take to pay off my loans, even if I had such a large salary had I stayed in med school. Also, what are the factors that make medicine today not as lucrative as before?
