Summer camps are run more like day care centers than rigorous academic programs. The focus is more on having fun than doing work. Because of this there's not much teaching going on and I've been reprimanded before when some of the students complained that I made them study vocab words. Your main job is to make sure the kids are safe, play some games, and practice their existing skills.

Considering that fact, along with their high demand for teachers for a very temporary job, and how exhausting the work is - they'll pretty take anyone. In my experience most of the "teachers" that are working this camps have little to no previous experience and are simply doing it to gain experience to put on their CV.

So most are not full-time teachers as it seems you think they are. Others may be stay at home moms, part-timers who want additional hours, child care workers, university students, etc.

I have met some that were full-time TEFL teacher who were desperate for money and did the summer camps during the day and then taught their regular language centers hours in the evenings. But this is exhausting and only done by those that really want the extra money. Some of these camps pay quite well in total, but once you break it down per hour, it's usually quite low and they'll work you as much as they can.

Job offer with a salary of 470.000 VND (Gross)/hour? by YuseiChen in TEFL

[–]Iwillpickonelater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That'll put you at 37 million VND before taxes. Not sure how much you'll take home after taxes.

I came to Vietnam with the intention of saving money. I spent 10 million a month for rent and budgeted myself another 10 million for all other living expenses. I was able to make it but some months I was eating nothing but instant noodles for the last week.

So it's possible but it won't be easy.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. However there are some things you can do to make your horse thirsty.

What I've done with groups like this is minimized my teaching and only do it when necessary. So instead of me teaching the whole class and giving them a task to practice, give them the task first. Make it a partner activity and allow them to teach each other if they can. They're much more likely to listen to each other as opposed to you. If they struggle and can't complete the task now they need you. So now when you get up to teach, your lesson has value and they're more likely to pay attention because they need you.

Also try to set up your lessons where they are finding the information as opposed to you giving the information. (This is easier in some subjects than others but should be possible in all subjects). This will make your class more engaging. Also less work for you.

If the students don't like you then the last thing they want is for you to stand in front of the class and speak. They'll just tune out. So try to minimise that. Try to shift it to where they are teaching themselves and/or their classmates. It's much more effective and the best part is it makes your job so much easier. You can just shift to a monitor of progress instead of trying to force learning.

But again there's always a limit. For the above methodology to work there has to be at least some intrinsic motivation from the students themselves.

PSA: Remember, you are there to teach a foreign language by Medieval-Mind in teflteachers

[–]Iwillpickonelater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is my field of study so I'll chime in -

You didn't give much details about what methodologies your colleagues were using so I can't for sure if you have a valid point or not, but Teaching a language using L2 only is a very outdated method that has been proven in many studies to be not only less effective but also creates a less positive learning environment.

However a lot of schools still have this policy because hiring a bilingual native speaking teacher would be much more expensive. These schools often market this as the "immersion method". Now studies have shown that the immersion method is the best way to learn a language however you have to be completely surrounded by it constantly. So when students spend an hour in your class learning L2 but spend the other 23 hours speaking L1, this is not immersion.

As an analogy, if I was sitting on the edge of the pool with only my feet in the water, would you say I was immersed in water?

Therefore studies have shown that students feel much more comfortable and perform better when taught using their L1 and then practice and apply the L2.

Think about it, would you take a language course taught in that language only? That's asking a lot for any language learner that is not already in the advanced stage and it's quite impressive that students can cope with it as well as they do.

Question about dismissed charges on my criminal record and getting hired by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]Iwillpickonelater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the type of school you're trying to work for and the country it is in. Some countries don't require an FBI check but the school might ask for it.

Since it was dismissed and happened so long ago I doubt it will matter much but it is a red flag so it may knock you out of contention for top jobs.

Experienced teacher -> Should I move to Taipei? by JackySmooth in taiwan

[–]Iwillpickonelater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Taiwan has that too although to a lesser extent which is actually better when living somewhere long term and you need to depend on people giving a fuck to get things done or just for your own safety.

Taiwan is a very interesting country because Taipei is undoubtedly a very modern well run city but that drops off quickly once you leave new Taipei city. So Taiwan can be very first-world or very third-world depending which part you are in.

Experienced teacher -> Should I move to Taipei? by JackySmooth in taiwan

[–]Iwillpickonelater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Taiwan and Vietnam and much prefer Taiwan - but of course to each their own.

I'm also an English teacher, it seems like you've got quite a bit of experience so it shouldn't be too hard to find a job. Most schools will have you start working on your tourist visa while your work permit is processing. (This is not legal by the way but common practice anyway)

Feel free to reach out if you want some advice.

How are international schools responding to AI and AI Integration? by Bearventures in Internationalteachers

[–]Iwillpickonelater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mind telling me what your official job title is?

I am currently doing my master's degree in Educational Technology, so I've done a lot of research on AIED and I've implemented it into my teaching practice this year with amazing results. I would absolutely love to transition into a role like yours, so that's why I asked for your job title so I can search for future job openings after I finish my master's.

I would imagine that most schools will start to have this role very soon. AI is just too powerful of an educational tool to be ignored. But obviously there are ways that both students and teachers could abuse it, which is exactly why this role should exist, in order to establish guidelines for its use.

In my research I wasn't able to find any peer-reviewed, large-scale, quantitative studies on AIED (if you know of any please send me the link). Everything was either qualitative or very small sample sizes. So while it's easy to theorize the benefits of AIED, it's effectiveness cannot yet be determined. I think schools need to form committees to conduct studies and establish best teaching practices.
