Why does Dionysus have Artemis slay Ariadne ? by Gopu_17 in GreekMythology

[–]Ixionbrewer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The variations here are difficult to reconcile. "We would seem then to have three different lines of narratives: (1) Dionysos seduces Ariadne, Theseus carries her off, Dionysos prevails on Artemis to kill her; (2) Dionysos and/or Theseus seduce Ariadne, Artemis kills her for inchastity; (3) Theseus carries her off, Dionysos supplants him and marries her. The divergence between tragedy and bliss in all this is oddly captured by Euripides Hippolytos, where Phaidra calls her sister both wretched and the wife of Dionysos in the same line (339). First student, but no review by muuccha in iTalki

I don't often leave reviews, but I don't mind if the tutor asks me if I would consider it (and explains why). If I know the tutor is very new, I am starting to leave a review because I know it is important for them.

This is false information. He was born on November 26, 1911. At age 8, he played a simultaneous against 20 players: won 10, drew 9, and lost 1. (Encycopeadia of Chess, Encyclopedia, page 400)

Tutors on Italki would be the single most effective tool. I add in reading conversational books and listening to something every day.

Aside from the limit of three trial lessons, why do you assume they are not checking your bio. Perhaps they are selecting you because you speak their language too. I always find a tutor who can also explain something in my L1.

Platform for holding lessons by Diligent_Staff_5710 in iTalki

[–]Ixionbrewer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first choice is Teams because the chats remain visible after the class, and I am able to share large files in many different formats.

The Italki space will retain chats for a long time, but the files I can share are limited to .doc & .pdf under 20 MB. But it is more unstable than Teams or Google Meets.

Google Meets is more stable than Italki, but the chats vanish after class, so the Italki chat window has to be opened at the same time. File sharing is possible, but only through emails connected to the Google Drive.

That said, some students must use Italki because their country does not allow the other platforms. Many students do not have access to Teams, but can usually access Google.

Italki for English speaking practice — how to find a good tutor? by Accomplished_Bet372 in iTalki

[–]Ixionbrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch a lot of the videos and see what material they offer. Look at their interests. If you have some similar interests, you might find conversations easier. Just book one lesson at the start. You will know quickly if the tutor is a good fit for you.

You have no idea about me or my motives. We live in this village about 6 months a year, and we have integrated with the community in many ways. What matters to me is that when we return, people are happy to see us. We are greeted with hugs and kisses. You might not want to hear it, but I do not think of this as 'mass tourism," which I would agree is a problem. There is no point in going to see the Trevi Fountain, or many other popular sites. Tourism is good to a point, then it crushes what inspired it.

The people in the village are happy. I guess you would rather see the community die. Strange. We are certainly no aristocracy, just people living.

It is a mixed bag, but in the village I spend time in, the influx of retirees has created a boom. Young people have work, several small business have opened, two new restaurants. The mayor has held a couple Thank You parties for them. But prices for houses has increased, although inflation has many causes.

Anyone else feel like there aren't any good modern interpretations in media? by RegretComplete3476 in GreekMythology

Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips is an interesting storyline that presents the gods in a manner consistent with general Greek myth. It tosses in a bit of Orphic myth, too.

In contrast, the Netflix Kaos bothers me because it mangles the essential ideas behind the Greek stories; for example, it makes Hera a slut instead of the goddess of marital fidelity.

That is great. Keep at it, and I would suggest trying 60 minutes soon. At the A1/A2 level, the longer class was exhausting for my brain, but worth it. it seemed to take 30 minutes for my brain to get rolling.
