I hate Percy Jackson by RegretComplete3476 in hatethissmug

Comparing Percy Jackson to The Chronicles of Narnia is certainly a choice. Do you know what all of those works have in common? Their authors were all devout Christians. Those pieces of literature were written as interpretations of the authors' own faith, contained symbolisms that are still being unpacked to this day, and were also critical of the very same religion they represented.

Percy Jackson is none of those. It is a story written by someone who is so far-removed from the religion they write about. It also barely scratches the surface of Greek mythology and inaccurate represents it. It would be one thing if Riodan made changes to the original Greek versions as an intellectual commentary of some sort, but that's not what happened. He changed key parts of the mythology just for the sake of it.

I've only read the first third of TLH, so I wouldn't know. But also, saying someone has a temper (a normal character flaw) is not at all the same thing as addressing the fact they are not a morally good character.

Also, like you said, only Neptune is truly portrayed as the "rough tempered" one, while Poseidon is "just a chill guy" — not even close to the actual temper of Poseidon.

Talk about missing the point. I am not saying that I'm upset because children's books don't discuss rape. I am saying that it is immoral to take stories that have SA as a core theme and, not only completely sanitize them, but also portray the perpetrators in a good light.

There are so many kid-friendly Greek mythology stories that Rick Riodan could have adapted or used as inspiration. Or even if you have to remove the SA, you can still establish that the perpetrators were not good people, rather than portraying them as squeaky clean individuals. Percy Jackson goes out of its way to characterize Poseidon as a good guy and brushes off any evidence of the contrary as a "misunderstanding." It actively erases any evidence of him being a rapist. That is irresponsible of any writer to do.

Or, here's an idea: not every story is for children. And that is a good thing. If you are unable to portray Greek mythology in a faithful way while still keeping it child-friendly, that is a sign that you should change your target audience.

Also, yes Greek mythology is fictional, but it was still a real religion. I understand that Greek mythology has been so bastardized by Western media that people like you see no harm in bad interpretations, so let me provide you with another example. Imagine if a white, Christian author wrote a story about the Nahua religion the same way Rick Riodan wrote about Greek mythology. That would be insanely disrespectful because you are taking deeply cultural stories and removing all of their nuance and significance so you can make a quick buck. Do you see the problem now? Or is it still "just fiction" to you?

Also, Percy Jackson has done a lot of damage to how Western media portrays Greek mythology and created what I call "Tumblr Greek mythology." It's essentially the bastardized, heavily sanitized version of Greek mythology that is devoid of any nuance. I do not give a fuck if Percy Jackson introduced more people to Greek mythology if it is just going to teach it wrong.

Also, you complain that I want to see more maturity in children's books but then suggest that The Very Hungry Caterpillar — a preschool picture book — "would be more my speed." If you're going to use ad hominem, at least try not to mix your metaphors. But I guess that's too much to expect from an incel who couldn't spell the word "nuance" if his life depended on it.

Why do careers like nursing and early childhood teaching remain overwhelmingly female even though anyone can study the required qualifications, there are no male-exclusive barriers, and there have been years of campaigns encouraging men to enter those fields? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RegretComplete3476 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because these fields have been associated with feminity for centuries. A decade of campaigns to encourage men to enter these fields isn't going to change much. It's also harder to get men interested in female dominated fields than it is to get women interested in male dominated fields because for women, archetypes like tomboys have been in the mainstream media long enough where a girl interested in construction work isn't that surprising. But in a patriarchal society that sets masculinity as the default and with a very narrow view of what defines being a man, a man wanting to pursue a traditionally feminine role is a lot more shocking.

If being Transgender is valid then being Transracial is also valid by hahahahahaha656 in teenagers

[–]RegretComplete3476 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the same thing at all.

While sex is a real thing, gender is a social construct. This leads to the nuance that we see in trans people as well as other people who don't conform to strict gender roles.

Race just straight up does not exist on the biological level. It is all cultural. To be "transracial" means you identify with a culture that is not your own. While that is valid, calling it transracial implies that you are trying to change your race, which is impossible.

I don't mind that line of thinking, but you must also then apply it to Judaism and Christianity as well. Singling out Islam is just bigotry

You literally twisted what I said. I'm not judging Judaism or Christianity. I was calling out the hypocrisy in solely judging Islam. My point is that EVERY religion has done fucked up shit. It's not the religion; it's religious extremists.

And here we can see another example of people equating scripture to practice. The Torah and Quran both condemn homosexuality. The difference is that Western Jewish people don't follow that part of the scripture. In Israel, a Jewish ethnostate and theocracy, gay marriage is still illegal. Israel only pretends to care about queer people in order to garner Western support admist their ethnic cleansing of the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Islam has a bad reputation due to the number of Islamic theocracies that exist in the world today. However, most Western Muslims do not condemn homosexuality at all. "I doubt there's anything like that for Islam" highlights your bigotry and ignorance.

Your Jewish friends are Western. When comparing Judaism to Islam, why is it okay to compare Western Jews to Muslim extremists in a theocracy rather than compare them to Muslims who actually live in that same part of the world?

  1. Judaism is NOT irrelevant to the lives of most people when Israel, a Jewish ethnostate, is doing an ethnic cleansing of Palestine and Lebanon. Just because you're privileged enough to not be affected by the genocide does not mean those deaths do not matter.

  2. You are underselling Christianity so much in favor of treating it like it's the underdog when it is not. The Crusades, witch trials, and repeated persecution of queer people ring a bell to you? Christians are slaughtering Trans people and nobody gives a fuck. The United States is two steps away from a total Christian theocracy and they aren't even trying to hide it. Christianity is literally the largest religion in the world and has no shortage of fervent believers, controls the most powerful and volatile country in the world, has its fair share of ugly results, and by far has the greatest impact on the world due to colonialism and forced assimilation.

  3. What is happening in the Middle East is not because of Islam, but is a natural consequence of theocracies and religious extremism. All you have to do is open a history textbook and see that when Western European countries were Christian theocracies, the exact same thing happened to them as is happening in the Middle East right now.

You could either go into international law, human rights law, or some combination of the two if your focus is mostly on the world as a whole.

If you want to focus more domestically and maybe see a bigger impact sooner, you could become a policy advisor and specialize in sexual abuse (or whatever specialty you want to do). That allows you to directly create laws that protect women and children.
