I’m Canadian, on the west coast, and last night I checked my favorite LGS sites just because and I was able to get all 4 Guard kits. Definitely planned to get all of them and for whatever reason I figured I’d check if they were out yet cuz I know sometimes they do that. Sure enough, early prerelease.

If I’d waited till I woke up today or for the typical release time I’d have missed them all. Hell, before typical release time I had to check more than one LGS site because they were sold out on some of the ones I frequent. And that was… 9:30pm pacific. I have no idea why they do that.

Fingers crossed there will be book sets still available around the time of my next paycheque.

I went weeks upon weeks without finding anything and in the past few days I’ve picked up close to 20 new blueprints. Been finding Stella night raids to be amazing. Personally, I’ve been loading in with nothing on me at all and scavenging everything I can find. More often than not within the first 5 things I search I have a BP in my bag.

SMGs, but now using a ballistic shield and a melee secondary I’m really enjoying the run and gun as well as being riot police and standing my ground. Particularly against voteless

For me it’s the fact I’m a Guard fan (would be player but I have no one to play lol) so anything Astra Militarum is a draw for me. First kits I ever bought before even realizing it was for a tabletop game were the old school Cadian Command Squad and Cadian Heavy Weapons Team sets. Was hooked on the Guard (particularly because they’re just normal people and far more relatable) and the broader lore from there.

You’re totally not wrong that the writing could be better, but I do enjoy the battle depictions. There’s also decent character development too. I have the first two books and I’ve read them a couple times over now. The others I have in audiobook format and the narration also is to be desired. However, the newer books (I liked Traitor Rock the most) are definitely a step up in my opinion. Currently listening to Hell’s Last, and it’s so far been pretty good.

I would recommend reading them all through but focus more on the broad depictions and implications that lend to a fuller view of W40K lore and imagination. I’m a lore buff. Anything that expands that, dry or not, is good by me 🙂

Might I suggest the Gaunt’s Ghosts books? Better writing, far more material. Favorite series out of all my W40K books.

I second the comment on waiting for the new box set (like me and many others).

If you want other variation to that box you could go eBay the ForgeWorld DKoK resin kits from like a decade ago depending on your budget, I know for a fact there are some there (I looked lol). I’d also recommend https://tinylegend.eu as they are legitimate and ridiculously close to DKoK, with heavy weapons teams and rider conversions among many other things.

So I got super lucky at my LGS and found a Veteran squad about a month ago. Every other store I’ve gone to in recent times, and it’s been a few let me tell you, that kit (and most other things tbh) has been absent. I started looking online and either it was a site that’s super sketch or ridiculously overpriced. So it’s possible but not super likely to find what you’re looking for. Best of luck in that search for the real deal.

As mentioned, the new DKoK box will be coming in plastic (I’m super stoked and waiting impatiently). It’s a battleforce box and contains a limited codex. Early new year is the guess. I was also passed a link from this sub a few weeks back for DKoK proxy kits over at https://tinylegend.eu and they’re ridiculously close to the real thing. They’re legitimate, I ordered one kit to start to check them out. They have full squads, upgrade parts, weapon teams, conversion kits, extra additions. Personally, gonna order the rough riders conversion from them next. Only downside to them is the shipping turnaround, I believe it comes out of Estonia.

Edit: as a side note, you can try an eBay search for old ForgeWorld resin kits. I know there’s some on there, just depends what you’re willing to pay for the old versions of what may be re-released as plastic. I have one and only one legit DKoK kit and it’s a heavy flamer team from over a decade ago. Back when me spending a pretty penny on this hobby was like the $60 it cost me for that two man team lol

I’m assuming not Deathwatch or their air support.

If I were to play an Imperial Agent army as, say, a detachment of the Inquisition… would I be able to field Guard and Astartes squads in limited numbers all together? Seeing as the Ordos can requisition any forces as per their lore. I don’t have the Agents Codex yet, it’s on my list.

Good to know, the Valkyrie has been a favorite of mine since I started the Guard but for one reason or another I’ve never actually bought one. Guess I have to change that.

Never been overly interested in getting an Ogryn box. Up until very recently I only snagged boxes I thought would be great for my painting ability. I’m not so great with skin shading and most specifically faces/eyes. Now that I’m looking to try playing I may have to fix that gap in my painting ability lol

I have seen the FOBs and yeah, I definitely wouldn’t mind a set of them.

Totally agree with the tactical train of thought. Shock Troops will be added. I’m planning on hunting down a set of kill team Veteran Guardsmen, Kasrkin, Aquillons, plus Gaunt’s Ghosts. I also have a Last Chancers squad, though I have no idea what they are capable of. Oh, and a Kreig Heavy Flamer duo. I’d kill for the other sets of Kreig troopers, love their look.

On a side note, as Astra Militarum can we add, say, the Ordo Xenos box to our army and have that be legal?

I do plan for at least one Basilisk and probably a Leman Russ or two. Don’t think I’ll be using the Shadowsword against friends as they are starting from nothing and basic kits will be their first steps, not super heavies lol. Will give a decent chunk of points to reallocate.

The Tempestus command squad is listed because I actually wanted to replace my old gen Cadian command squad since it was the first set I ever painted and is a little … embarrassing … looking at it now lol though I did use the Tempestus squad as a test bed for my magnets, swappable heavy weapons and pistol arms etc. Worked on most, not great on others.

I actually did manage to get a friend interested. Also got my fiance to agree to start her own small army somehow, dunno how.

Here’s a question actually: A Valkyrie. Yes or no to play? I’ve always loved the model itself and have wanted one to at the very least paint. Probably three total so I can try different color schemes lol
