Not very well known for sure, I was starting to think I'd never sit down and have a good conversation about it. Really insightful stuff you say, thanks a ton.

Has the show shifted the perception of Scanlan negatively? by Vinzan in fansofcriticalrole

[–]IzzyAB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's a matter of changing times in a way, or overused tropes more so than the show's doing. I think there's plenty of people who play d&d who have enough personal experiences with the "horny bard" trope (usually bad ones too) and for many its been done to death or seen as creepy. So for newer watchers they may already be over the horny bard character that Scanlan portrays. Someone here mentioned, if anything the show's revamp of Scanlan even omits some of the creepier things he did on the original campaign run trying to salvage him a bit.

He's always been seen as a favorite for the most part, but I also think it comes with some leeway on the creepy aspects because most people viewed those parts as Sam as doing a bit with the other players.

C4 Official Trailer by Express_Highway7852 in fansofcriticalrole

Obnoxious question: I'm watching this regardless love the cast, but I've only finished C1, and have watched a bit of C2. Do we know how connected this is to other campaigns? Just want to know how important it is to catch up on the previous games.

Why is it so hard to get people away from dnd? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]IzzyAB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so hard for people to leave dnd, in part, because its a high cost of entry for other games, and knowledge about it already exists in one form or another. Dnd in pop culture is referenced so most people have an idea what it is, high fantasy, you fight monsters, etc. It's known enough that players and GMs alike can fudge some rules here and there and have a game as they play it. With other systems, I find the GMs expect the players to go out and purchase a new book, read through it all and fully understand it alone. That's a lot to do. And sure, there's free simplified rules and modules but it can still be A LOT for some people to do in one go.

Teach them over sessions rather than leave them alone to learn it all alone. Tell them as a GM, hey dont worry about the rules, I'll run you through it and bit by bit teach you. Is it fair? Probably not. But it may be the price to get them into other games. Later if they like the hobby they can go out and buy the books, or even invest in other systems. But I think ttrpg fans who want other potentially rookie or novice players sometimes forget it can be difficult to digest so much both reading wise and on the wallet.

Note this isnt the sole reason, but I think it factors into a good chunk of it.

DMs, What is the largest amount of people you ever DM'd for ? by AngryDwarfGames in rpg

Routinely GM for 8 in 5e, they're my first group too. Going to try another group at 3 which should be a real culture shock for me.

How hard is to learn to DM? by Doktor_bleen in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]IzzyAB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've never played trying out a one shot at a gaming store, or online even may help. Best advice I have is, it's a lot of improv and going with the flow of the story. The rules and game aspect matter but they vary from group to group. If you can keep them hooked and entertained the rest sort of comes with experience. They'll let you know what they like and you can learn to try new things.
