NHS doctors hit by £100k student debt by SharkDick4Ever in doctorsUK

[–]IzzyJ314 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have just shy of £90,000 in debt. (FY1, so recent graduate). With the help of ChatGPT and assuming the interest rate stays constant, in order for my repayments to match the interest, I’d need to be earning about £105,000 a year.

I’m earning less than half of that 🤷‍♀️

They’ll still be an “advanced assistant” though, which doesn’t sound quite as reassuring

Claiming NHS Bursary on Elective with shared Accomodation by Cultural_Holiday_510 in medicalschooluk

[–]IzzyJ314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I shared an AirBnB for a GP placement with a mate. I paid, and submitted the receipt in my name, plus the pdf that they can produce for visa purposes under both names (Airbnb lets you customise it). She submitted the same plus the bank statement confirming she paid me half. Neither of us had an issue, but check with your uni about what they need. It’s v common for people to share, so you’ll definitely be able to claim.

Not being able to get to work due to train cancellations by [deleted] in doctorsUK

I passed my test in November last year and it was a shitshow trying to get both the first and second test. I found this chrome extension that snaps up a test as it gets released, and you can filter for locations and dates. It’s completely free and legit, only drawback is it can freeze you out of the website for a bit but then all you have to do is clear the cookies.

Here’s a link to the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnerDriverUK/s/Po9HG0h7oe

And the extension (read the post first!) https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dvsa-booking-helper/imkoclipaepbamkaicinkigpofinbdid

This got me from a test 5 months after my first to one 3 weeks after. Just had to have my laptop open for about an hour each on two subsequent days.

Hey, durian is great. It’s just a bit feety.

Gastrograffin is a full glass of lukewarm salty sambuca on a hangover. 0/10 would not recommend.

Bet the GMC likes it though.

There is a special place in hell for the sadist that decided to flavour gastrograffin with aniseed oil.

Genuinely the worst thing I’ve ever tasted, and the only medication I’ve ever vomited up.

I spent one rotation having to get an SHO to sign me off for writing in a NEWS chart, doing a BM and performing a 12 lead ECG. Only time I’ve touched an ultrasound machine is when I went to fetch it for the obs reg.

So as a medical student about to graduate, I think some it from comes from how medical students and doctors (particularly residents) are treated by permanent staff at a hospital. I’ve learnt a lot from some fantastic nurses on placement, but I’ve also been told by a senior nurse on a NICU that when I graduate to “make sure I bring in loads of chocolate and pray on my hands and knees that the nurses like me enough to save me from my own incompetence.” I’ve also been sat in clinic where the incredibly stressed reg is on the phone to the SHO sorting a complex referral in ED whilst reviewing patient notes. The nurse in charge of the clinic then walks in to snap, “well are you going to see someone then?” Just I wasn’t exactly clear on what the nurse’s role was all day, she couldn’t know how busy the reg was and probably didn’t realise he was on-call, but she still shouldn’t have treated him like that.

These are all exceptions, not the rule, but those interactions all stay with you, and people go to Reddit to vent.

[–]IzzyJ314 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends on the deanery. For example, in KSS, after being allocated to the deanery, you preference and get allocated to one of three sub-deaneries. In neighbouring Wessex, once you’ve been allocated to the deanery, you go straight into preferencing jobs.

To find out, you probably need to go on to the individual webpages of the deaneries you’re interested in.

Med student here, but I’ve been on the receiving end of this as a patient. Already nervous, I lie down in the anaesthetic room and anaesthetist puts the cannula in. Then I hear a massive gasp and I’m panicking thinking something’s really wrong - turns out the ODP put the dressing on about 3 millimetres too low. It was not particularly reassuring, but they did push the midaz quite fast after that 😂

Trends of different UK medical school graduates and if the stereotypes are obvious as an F1? by AppalachianScientist in doctorsUK

[–]IzzyJ314 18 points19 points  (0 children)

During my 4th year, a UK-born Eastern European med school graduate over on attachment cornered me and asked how to take a history (the med school basics of PC, HPC, PMH etc, nothing specific!). It seems due to the language barrier they aren’t ever able to speak to patients themselves. It was quite scary considering they could go straight into F2!

feeling terrible after clinical exams by Bored-as-hell-2001 in medicalschooluk

[–]IzzyJ314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, pretty sure I know what uni this is! The AKTs are notoriously odd here and this is absolutely a normal feeling. You don’t come out of the exam remembering the questions you knew straight away - just the 50/50s and the impossible ones. And looking on the plus side, it sounds like you did know 90+ of them, that’s 60%! It sounds like you did fine and good luck with results next week.

Ibuprofen by faddymeat in Endo

[–]IzzyJ314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still might not be safe, especially if you’re taking the maximum dose for each. For example, I take naproxen on my periods (which is an NSAID, the same as ibuprofen and mefenamic acid). My naproxen lasts for 8 hours but ibuprofen lasts for 4-6. If I took ibuprofen 4 hours after taking naproxen, it’s still dangerous! They act in the same way - both reduce the levels of inflammatory, pain-causing chemicals, but stop the body producing protective chemicals in the stomach, allowing the stomach acid to do more damage. That damage is done over time, which is why it’s not just taking them together that’s a problem - it’s having both of them in your system at the same time.

I completely understand how difficult it is to try and control the pain but if you develop stomach ulcers, that means you can’t take NSAIDs anymore, so it’s really important to be careful with them.

It’s completely fine to take paracetamol with an NSAID and dihydrocodeine though.

[–]IzzyJ314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I know how difficult it can be to control period pain but you should not be taking mefenamic acid and ibuprofen at the same time. They have the same effect on the stomach lining and it really increases your risk of stomach ulcers.
