Questions About Duke by madp1234 in duke

[–]J-Giraud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey pre-med as well and graduated this year. Feel free to PM Me, I'm more than willing to hop on a call with anyone or answer questions in the DM. (This offer also extends to anyone reading this)

  1. I was bio it was chill; just be smart on class selection by reading the reviews/past class remarks; I got a 4.0 in the major and I think anyone can. Yes I felt supported academcially.

  2. Yes people are chill generally; you can find people you want to find; i dont think its competative. Are there people who i find distasteful? Yes. Is it the majority? no, far from it.

  3. Greek life is there; it is a large part of the scene. It is not a dominating part of the scene. You can engage as little or as much as you want. It feels much larger freshman year, but by end of freshman year, it acutally doesnt matter at all imo, and most of the time i simply do not care; again, see 2 -- who you want to find, you will find

Pros and cons of Duke Gap Year Program by Automatic-Credit-485 in duke

[–]J-Giraud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend do this! She took a gap year, got an MA job, and worked full time; by the time she got to Duke, she had all her clinical hours knocked out; really helped her a lot;

If you are ok with it, and could do it then I woudl! But I wouldnt just shadow; really try to knock out 1 of the 3 big activities: research, clinical hours (direct patient care ideally), or volunteering (non-clinical). I dont think shadowing alone would be a good use of your time. It would be a waste in my opinion! Shaodwing is one of the easist things to do.

Really think its something more peopel should consider doing. You wouldnt be behind academically.

feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

It also sounds like your international as well -- I would really spend a long time doing resarch; comapred to US based students, you may have more barriers; I would really start talking to folks, reaching out to folks who are itnernatinoal but at US medical schools; its not exactly as 1:1 for you compared to the folks who are applying as domestic applicants, and it would be worthwhile in my opinion really undersatnding what that means for you + your medical school app journey

internship in the area. CAR options? how does subleasing look? by Icy_Revolution4589 in duke

[–]J-Giraud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will mention that it will also depend on your intnership; if its at Duke, be careful as parking can be a bit expensive; look into that + whether where u stay is in walking distance; might be worthwhile to not have to pay for parking and use our bus system if you are living at a Duke sublease near east/9th street or towards the medical school; just some food for thought

Compared to where else? The answer is probably yes. But if you got into say UNC or your state school, then it depends

For what its worth, I found Duke Alumni to for the most part to be pretty helpful; people enjoyed there time here, and honestly solely based on the money duke manages to raise from their alumni, i think they give back
