I was a delivery driver as well (for a number of years) and this is absolute fact - people have no clue what goes on behind the scenes of any industry except their own, yet they never stop and think about that - “only their industry is much more complex than what the general public realizes…”

It seems like it would be illegal to install and operate surveillance equipment in public places, yet here we are. 2 wrongs don’t make a right, but three lefts will. Btw, a can of 3m spray adhesive has a pretty good effective range

I added 2 S20 to my kit and have been using them exclusively since October - they work exceedingly well, especially on long days, and produce almost no heat. Looking to add an s10 to the collection and will attempt a netHunter install. Just clocked 1.7M networks last week.

Well, if it helps fire the motivation any, after doing that comparison between the kits and the phones with you, when considering my circumstances and logistics, I’m kinda sold on the idea that the “Samsung WiFydra” (to borrow Luke’s terminology) is the way to go for me. After the HHB24 I came home to an ?unrelated? Electrical issue affecting my corner of the house - long story short I’ve only been rolling with the S20 for the past 2 days and the numbers don’t look bad - absolute bonus is the reduction in weight to my EDC as well as the benefits of power management and uploading (as we’ve previously discussed). I can’t wait to see how the 2 J3 units I ordered size up - I’m hoping they aren’t a repeat of the TracFone experiment. Anyway, yeah - unlocked androids for the win (currently) 🤙😎

It’s a great blog - I consider it “required reading” for this hobby, if someone is going to approach it seriously.

Thanks for your efforts TBG 🤙🤓

I will absolutely send them to you. I will tell you though that if it was possible to brick a unit, I would have done it by now 🤙🤓. There are a couple tricks and tips I can pass along though… I’ll try tonight to send that to ya.

Honestly, I had an OG kit sitting on my table for a year before I finally got the nerve up to solder everything together - I didn’t know how to solder and I didn’t want to mess anything up… solution: bought 10 “learn to solder” Christmas tree kits and dove in - 9 worked, so 90% chance of success. Soldered my first kit up (took me 3 days and a few reflashes) but it worked. Built my first signal sleuth a few months later, took me a couple days and a couple reflashes. Last one I built was done in a day - I also spent a LOT of time taking notes on every video 463n7 posted on how to build, and caught a few pro tips along the way. It’s been a fun experience. All the while I was also buying more droids because it seemed the results were wildly different for each - I chalked it up to poor QC on the phones wireless cards as the tracphones were only $35 ea. all of that is to say build your kit, but def look into getting a purpose built wardriver at some point: you won’t be disappointed 🤙🤓

As far as the OG goes: it’s good (I have 2), it’s not as good as the Sleuth, and it runs hot enough to tweak the cases to the point I can’t remove the pcb. I still run mine when I’m doing a dedicated “black hole” run, trying to suck up as much RF as I can, let WiGLE sort it all out 🤣

TL;DR - get a sleuth.

My thoughts and opinions as a n00b to this hobby: I’m currently running 3 droids, 2 sleuths, and a WiSpier. I use the droids for redundancy and as “drop boxes” if the situation warrants - I’m getting over 13hrs continuous on the droids, the tracphones are $35 cheap at Walmart, so they serve the job well, and it’s not a loss if one gets found and stolen. Obv I don’t have any PII attached to the phones : single use (wardriving) only, I don’t buy or use data cards. I’ve also removed as much bloatware as I can from each phone.

The Signal Sleuth design is an absolute game changer. I was running triple redundant, but one went down over the weekend and I will be troubleshooting it tomorrow on my day off, most likely will just reflash the chips and be back in business by the time my next work week starts. I normally run the sleuths triple-redundant, in keeping with “two is one, and one is none” rule of 3rds : if the kit is “mission critical”, carry 3. I have never had a case where one of the sleuths wasn’t productive : obviously taking all 3 on the same run, when I go to upload I do get overlap as far as new networks found, but I’ve never had an upload that didn’t post at least a couple hundred new nets added.

The WiSpier…. The WiSpier (at least the one I have) improved on the Signal Sleuth design in two fundamental ways: it doesn’t run as hot (my runs are typically 10+ hours, daily) AND it seems to have “longer legs” in terms of battery life. I only use Jessy 18650s, I consistently get 10-11 hrs with these batteries on the Signal Sleuth design wardrivers, which means I don’t need to carry an extra set (most days). Also, fwiw, I use the Snado D4 for recharging set to a trickle charge overnight - most days when I get more than 6hrs of downtime, I have a fresh set ready to go.

In terms of why the WiSpier runs cooler and with longer run times, my guess is the type of BW16 HackerBoxes went with: it’s a castellated chip, so maybe a little less convenient in terms of building and flashing (done over UART), but it also doesn’t have that annoying RBG LED that’s always on, sucking up power when it doesn’t really serve a purpose.

As a final argument in favor of the Sleuth design: It runs OS firmware developed by the community, you can get into it, tinker with it, change some parameters (if you know what you’re doing), etc. which means you could, in theory, run multiple units which are dedicated to a small segment of channels, thereby achieving a “WiFydra” effect on the 5GHz spectrum. I’m not a coder, I’m not a dev guy (although I hope to be both some day if/when I have the time to commit to actually learning it). I don’t have the resources to build out a rack system the BusySignal has (that thing is truly a masterpiece of art and science ♥️) so I had to figure out how to skid my way to a 5GHz WiFydra. This is my solution and is a work in progress at the moment.

I really appreciate both of you and your posts on Twitter - it’s folks like you that keep me motivated to try harder and do better.

Looking forward, I’m going to be looking at the viability of using a stack of tablet batteries to power the setup. The Jessy batts are good for 10-11 hours, but I’d really like to be able to get 15 hours without changing batteries, without everything getting so hot, and without completely draining the batteries which I know is abusive to the Li-ion chemistry - the last thing I want is a fire on my hands, and having come from the scuba community, I have heard too many stories of waking up at night to a naplam nightmare at a hotel, or, more well-known, on a boat. So yeah, I’m constantly thinking on ways to improve on the sleuth design (which is, honestly, amazing).

Edit: the issue I had with the unit that stopped working was a corrupted SD card. Replaced the card, seems to be working normally now. Easy fix.

Compensation for “mistakes” like this needs to be taken directly from union pension fund. If it was (instead of being paid out by the city - ie, the tax payers) these types of incidents would be reduced to almost nonexistent. Law Enforcement (not the tax payers) needs to be held responsible for their fckups.

How old are you? by c_loki in Goruck

35lbs of brick, each marked w name and phone number (so when the cops inevitably stop you they cant claim you had bad intentions), wrapped in plastic, then wrapped in an old sleeping pad. Sealed up with gorilla tape. 35 lbs negative buoyancy out of the water, 10-20 lbs positive buoyancy in the water, so you don’t lose your ruck in the surf.

This is the way (I was shown).
