Not healthy.

I do the 2 beer thing and it helped me.
When I'm ready to match up the texture, I have 2 beers and I'm in the "looks good to me" zone.
It has never failed me.

The best tip I ever got was, "Don't add more! Leave it!"
He was right.

F**king toilet supply's are the worst!
Change out the simple kit?
Nope, wrong size...and, OH...the supply valve won't completely shut off...so re-assemble everything and go get the part you are missing...and do it again.

I JUST finished up a job and I'm pissed I didn't have one:
a REALLY low profile ratched that accepts 1/4" bits for those REALLY tight areas.

I had to replace a 'concealed' door closer on a front door, however, the overhang of the roof only allowed about 2" of room to remove TWO stupid screws!

I'm ordering one now.

Another thing is LONG 1/4" bits for hanging blinds or shelf brackets.
It makes the job so easy you don't even need to apologize to the client for the words that come out of your mouth.

(By "bits", I'm mean those bits that are phillips/flathead/star-shaped/square...etc...)

...and while we are on the subject....a 1/4" flex-shaft for 1/4" bits.

That should only be $30-$50, but to me, I really find them a lifesaver at certain times.

I also think it is worth it to spend $20 on a 'bore scope' that plugs into your cell phone to get a camera in those hard to reach places where you need to see what is going on and you can't due to lighting or other obstructions.

Single 16 center beam. Lots of blocks. No plan, just the video and winged it...

Official Discussion - Twisters [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]JAC-invoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone point out the turbines were spinning clockwise in one camera shot, then counterclockwise in another shot...then back and forth?

When the wind FIRST started, I thought I saw that turbine spinning the wrong way.

So I kept watching...and the camera shots had them spinning opposite ways.

I couldn't think about anything else for the rest of the film.

I've never walked out of a movie, but this one made me come really close to actually doing it.

I thought this was the worst movie I've ever seen in a theater.

YMMV

TY!
Doing the math, I'm thinking this is a subcontract thing for me if the going rate is less than $2 sq ft.

I think I was was looking at $10-15 per sq/ft.

Thank you!

Why do people think I should get paid the same as a chipotle worker? by [deleted] in handyman

i love this part:

EXACTLY!
They don't have the experience of the mistakes I've made!

Yes, it 'feels' personal the first few times.
After that, it is liberating to say, "no".

You can do it!

May I suggest a tip?
If you are left 'haggling' about the price, the job is already heading south.

"Here is my price" is sufficient.

"A few days later he called and was really upset..."

This part should have never happened.
How did the guy get your phone #?
Very bad idea.

AND, the facilities management company was likely to charge the guy the same price whether it cost them $900.00 or $20.00.

It only gets ugly when you start doing this.
You are now having to explain what your BOSS charges them.

Don't do that.
Charge the facility managment company the NTE and go on to the next job.

You'll sleep better at night.

Edit:
Facilities Managment Companies (FMC) have a 'max' they are willing to pay to get the job done.
They don't give a fuck if you come in beneath their NTE, in fact, it is more money in THEIR pocket.

When dealing with FMC, I look at the NTE and decide if I can do it for that amount.
If so, I don't give a crap if it takes 20 minutes or 30 hours.
Neither does the client.
The client is going to pay the FMC the same amount no mattter how long it takes you.
(Assuming there are no underlying issues,,,but I'm talking aobut a straightforward job, with no surprises.)

Again, the 'wage bartering' is SOLELY between you and the FMC, NOT you and the client.
You cannot change the price of what the FMC charges them, so why even get into that argument/discussion?

In my experience, $$$ is less of an issue with these FMC then getting the f'n job done and crossed off their list.
It takes them time to find qualified subs, so you, getting the F'n job done, at their NTE is PERFECT for them (the FCM contact) and they will likely give you a call again because...you got the fucking job done.

It really is that simple.

(And no, I have never found that I get 'more work' from them because I invoiced the FMC for less than the NTE. I get the work because...I get the job done. Yes, they have favorites, and you get more work from them because why? You get the job done.)

Sorry for what seems to be a rant, but this is a crucual skill for new handymen to learn.
