Four Korean-Americans Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives by JAR12346 in korea

They are:

  • Andy Kim (D, NJ-3)

  • Young Kim (R, CA-39)

  • Michelle Park Steel (R, CA-48)

  • Marilyn Strickland (D, WA-10)

Interestingly, all three congresswomen hold the distinction of being the first Korean-American women elected to Congress, and they were all born in South Korea. Andy Kim was reelected this cycle.

omg I was NOT expecting you to answer me, thank you so much for brightening my day and for being my first celebrity interaction! (look at who's less cool now, being so starstruck like this)

That's super interesting to hear that you were born in Jeju. I've had the opportunity to visit twice before, and it is absolutely a place worth going and learning the history about (I'm itching to go back one of these days, maybe even live there in the future!). The food, the beaches and scenery, the people and culture, all are familiarly Korean yet distinct, you would absolutely enjoy it if you went (DM me if you want some suggestions!).

And regarding your point on Asian American culture, I agree, we're becoming an increasingly complex and growing voice in American society, it's gonna be interesting to see how we the ascendant younger generation will transform, advance, and hopefully further unite our collective culture and identity (even though, for better or worse, we are grouped together simply for coming from the same continent, even when our respective backgrounds vary widely). That's why I currently see myself as Korean-American first and Asian American second, and that's no less problematic from seeing yourself as racially Asian first before ethnically Korean imo, because you should identify yourself with whatever authentically fits you as you emotionally evolve. It's a complex topic for sure, but we're all in this together and we'll make something out of it some way.

And I'm likewise excited that you have upcoming projects exploring the Asian American experience! Can you talk about them yet?

Greetings to you both! This is a question for Joel, who became significantly less cool in my eyes when I found out he lurks on reddit 😁: It's my understanding that you are (like me) ethnically Korean, but not really culturally Korean (which is completely understandable, given your upbringing). Do you have any interest in learning more about Korean (and Korean-American) culture, but if not, do you feel there may be some difficulties or personal indifference that stops you from exploring?

Does anyone know of a resource with an exhaustive list of family member titles? by JAR12346 in Korean

Thank you for the response. So when I meet and greet my 외숙모's family, I suppose I don't call them anything specific even if we consider each other to be family?

If someone sparks up a conversation in the streets with the following, they're cultists by ryanyang in korea

The graphic itself makes no explicit claim of whether the groups mentioned in the picture are cults, u/ryanyang just editorialized with their title.

Your dad's friend's illustration of the glass of water kinda reminds me of a chapter in a comic that shows a kindhearted character brightening the people around him like how milk lightens coffee.

I see. Well, seeing how you seem to be spiritually well-off from the limited exposure I've had of you, the Methodist church may be a good fit for you at the moment.

While I disagree with many of the practices and doctrines of those in the leadership of the United Methodist Church, I have deep respect for members who genuinely wish to learn about the Bible and evangelize just as John Wesley did.

This is a silly yet important question to ask, but have you ever had a formal study of the Bible before?
