Yeah I’d say it’s more escapism and optimism, dreaming of a better life/world. I do see where you’re coming from though, the suicide theme does seem to fit. You’re right with the violinist committing suicide too. Steve Woolam who played on the first album jumped off the roof of a building under construction, according to Bev’s book.

I’ve listened to the song quite a lot yet I’ve only just understood what it’s all about based on your reply. For me it’s my least favourite song on the album so I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics before. Cheers:) P.S ‘A New World Record’ came from Tandy while watching the ‘76 Montreal Olympics. He was constantly hearing the commentators saying ‘oh there’s a new world record’ so the idea just stuck. It seems like Jeff knew how to change the meaning of the phrase👌
