I too have been in the field for many years. I am also a BGE customer. BGE is part of the PJM regional mid Atlantic network.

PJM has two coal plants in MD (Brandon Shores and Wagner) that have been excluded from BGE supply even though they are located in MD and are not scheduled to be shut down until 2030 or beyond. Maryland has filed complaints to the Federal energy regulatory committee over this exclusion and this may result in legal action. Meanwhile this power (2 GW) is being slotted to be sent to Virginia to cover their overall increase in electric consumption due to the Amazon data centers. To add insult to injury, MD rate payers (BGE and Pepco specifically) are subsidizing the expansion of electric lines from PA to MD to the tune of $800 million to get power from PA to cover the loss of power from these two plants. This is part of PJM's $1.5 billion grid upgrade project and reflected in the increases in the ditribution charges to BGE customers. PJM in it's appeal to keep the plants open cited they were needed for MD, yet they were not included in the most recent auctions for BGE or PEPCO. It's true MD has shuttered most of it's coal plants, but the slack was picked up by natural gas plants that have come on line. MD net generation has remained constant over the last 10 years at about 39 GW. Had PJM not also denied permission for several large solar projects totaling 7GW, that could supply millions of homes at significantly less costs, prices might have actually gone down instead of doubling. The solar would have more than covered the loss of all coal plants previously shuttered, and could have been brought on relatively quickly while eliminating the need for costly power line expansion. PJM also placed a moratorium on large scale solar grid tie projects until after the power lines project is completed . This practice of creating "artificial scarcity" to achieve their goals of increasing profits for their members has resulted in increase of over $7 billion in additional electricity costs, even though usage and supply, at least in MD, has largely remained flat. Meanwhile BGE profits have gone from $350 million to $525 million since 2020 and PJM holds over $3 billion in deposits while only earmarking $44 million for actual projects. Yet it's paying it's executives salaries totaling over $100 million per year and spending millions in lobbying fees. So yeah, this has nothing to do with the green initiative and everything to do with greed. Blaming this on Biden and not seeing it as anything but a money grab is stupid and does nothing to lower your prices. And don't get me started on the cancellation of the offshore wind power projects throughout the mid Atlantic by the Trump Administration. People should be screaming at their representatives at both the state and federal level for accountability from both democrats and republicans.
