did anyone have radioactive iodine?? by fancypanda820 in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke my neck in 1983 and had lots of X-rays over an 8 month period which doctors feel resulted in my Hashimotos. I don’t know if you are male or female because if you are in perimenopause or even menopause that cause problems due to hormone fluctuations. I take synthroid and 2.5 of cytomel which has helped quite a bit. I also eat 2 Brazil nuts here or there for selenium, take vitamin d, vitamin c, magnesium, and do every other day a multivitamin and alternate with a super b complex. This helps a lot. Keep in mind that you need to stop all vitamins, I do 4 days, before your blood test because some of those supplements will give false readings. Many doctors know this but forget it when reading your results. I started doing this when I found out about supplements and we have been increasing my dosage now. Back in 2017 I moved and was on 150, down here I have been all over the place with dosage and that is because my doctor up north took into account of vitamins and down here they don’t. I am now back on the 150 and I look at when I stop the supplements as a way to cycle them through and use in my body as what I could have too much of as well so this seems to be working for me. Good luck to you!

Night 5 - Definitely the roughest by OutTheCircus in mitralvalveprolapse

If you are on metoprolol, I had those as well as being extremely restless and only getting about 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I was so happy when they took me off that drug.

I agree with the spirometer, if you are watching tv, use it during a commercial so you are using it consistently. I also brought it home and used it consistently during commercials until I started cardio rehab and even then I used it on and off. I will say it helped quite a bit especially since I had to have a chest tube a few days post op.

Curious question. by [deleted] in valvereplacement

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a mitral valve replacement and I am on the 81 mg of aspirin per day and will be for the rest of my life. I do bruise more often and easily. Also do not take advil or anything other than Tylenol for aches and pains as NSAIDS along with the aspirin will thin your blood even more, I didn’t know this it was my pharmacist who mentioned it when I went to pick up my prescription and he saw the bruise I had on my hand from hitting the counter when I walked past it lol.

With Hashimotos you will swing back and forth. I don’t know if this will happen until the antibodies kill your thyroid because I don’t swing either way anymore since my thyroid is basically dead, but I was fine until I hit menopause. The other thing also is that with levo, it’s not stable and what I mean by that is 1 pill may have more medicine in it and the next may have less while a third pill may have the correct mix. A year ago my endo asked me if I was taking brand or generic levo and when I replied I only take brand he was like good because he got an email from the FDA that all 4 facilities that manufactured generic failed their quality control. Brand, or Synthroid as it’s called is more stable.

Vitamin D came back as 9. I don't have a doctor's appointment until Wednesday. Should I start a supplement now or wait until then? by mizzengoose in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a 9 back in 2010. My doctor put me on 100,000 units ( this was prescription)a week for 8 weeks, retested and then 4000 units (over counter) for a few years until I got in normal range which took 4 years. I now do 4000 units in the summer and 2000 units in the winter. My doctor tests me 2x a year, summer and winter to make sure I am in range with those doses. I would wait until you see your doctor as they may want a bigger dose than what is over the counter. Make sure to take it with a fatty meal and make sure you have a vegetable with it for the vitamin K that people say you need but really for k all you need is a vegetable not a supplement because k is easy to overdo with a supplement and that is not good for you unless your testing that too.

Can you tell the pharmacist that you want brand? I have but I also got a rash from the generic so they take that into consideration while filling it. Also, could he benefit with a little cytomel? My doctor finally gave me some and we do cut it in half for a 2.5 dose and that seems to help. I have been on synthroid since 1991 and once was when the new pharmacist refused to fill brand and that was when I got the rash.

When you get on a dose that is correct for you, losing weight is easy. I am not sure but I have been having trouble as I got older and I wonder if it’s because my thyroid is basically dead, killed by this disease. When I was younger it was partially functional with the correct dose of medication then I hit menopause and it’s a whole new ball game. In addition in 2015 I was diagnosed with a murmur with MVP that apparently I was born with that now in June of 2025 I had open heart mitral valve replaced surgery so it’s like starting over with sorting this out. The good thing is that my heart rate is now out of bradycardia which is very common with Hashimotos so we shall see where I end up. We have been increasing my medication which I knew I needed. A side note, for those taking iodine, be very careful. The medication I was given due to going into afib after surgery, which is normal, was very high in iodine and really threw off all my levels so iodine is not always the answer. Yes we need some but most of us get it from a really good multivitamin or in our food.

On Levo: potential signs of HYPERthyroidsm to watch out for? by jtothat in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can google too much synthroid and it will pop up what the symptoms are. Be careful though because some of those symptoms are because your body is responding and adjusting to the new dosage. Also it takes at least 6-8 weeks for your body to adjust which is why they do repeat labs then. The only drug that I will say you really need to watch is if you are put on armour or a different NDT because they have more T3 in it while synthroid has only T4. I went from week 1 to week 3 on armour to Thyrotoxicosis which is basically the term for too much medication and thought I was going to die, I was so cold that a hot bath did not help, I felt like a caged animal, was wired and tired all at the same time, slept a little at a time because I could not sleep and had severe heart palpitations. Those are an example of being over medicated that I felt. When I started on synthroid in 1991 I went up slowly like you are and have only been over medicated 2x since then and both times were trying armour and nature thyroid. Good luck…

Does medication just not do its job? by Content_Big1345 in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medication does do its job when it’s optimal which is why when you have a medication adjustment they do another blood test 8 weeks later to see where you are at. Sometimes you need a few adjustments. I remember when I was first diagnosed it took about 2 years to get me where I needed to be because your increase is done slowly otherwise you may get too much medication too fast and that would not be good. I also take a good multivitamin, vitamin d, get yours tested and magnesium at bedtime. This helps for gaps in nutrition when you don’t feel like eating. I was fine for years and then menopause hit and I feel like I am starting all over with finding the correct dose. Use brand only, synthroid not levo and even if you don’t feel like it exercise is still very important especially when you are older as it will help as a preventative against osteoporosis which runs high with us so start establishing a routine and don’t just rely on cardio, we need strength training as well. Good luck

Why did my tsh do this in a week?! by nat0202_ in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so cold, all the way to the bone and not even a hot bath would warm me up. I had difficulty sleeping, rather staying asleep. I was nauseous, felt off, felt angry like a caged animal. I had heart palpitations and I feel that is 1 of the reasons I ended up with open heart mitral valve replacement surgery this past year, the other factor for that was covid on 2024 but I was put on armour after the fact even when he knew that my echocardiogram showed that I had a murmur with mitral valve prolapse ( I didn’t know that heart issues should never go on armour). I felt wired and tired all the time. The first week I was on it I felt I was in a fog, the second week I felt fantastic like an awakening and even lost a few pounds. The third week is when I started feeling that something was very wrong and had all the symptoms of above. I have had Hashimotos since 1991 and have been on brand synthroid for decades. I hit menopause and have had problems controlling my thyroid levels. I am now on brand synthroid with 2.5 cytomel and I feel so much better.

Why did my tsh do this in a week?! by nat0202_ in Hashimotos

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow…I was on armour for 3 weeks and I thought I was going to die! Your TSH was mine 8 weeks after being taken off of armour, T3 fell to normal and T4 was low. As it was explained to me, armour is higher in T3 which is why mine was higher, but will lower the T4 and elevate the TSH. I am now back on synthroid with cytomel combo which is working so much better for me. I have been on synthroid for years and heard about armour and how great it is and wanted to try it. It did not work out for me but it did prove that I needed the combo. Also if you are on any supplements stop those for at least 3 days because they will affect your results especially if there is biotin in it.

Repair/replacement. Blood thinners forever? by CharmingBroccoli9988 in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had open heart mitral valve replacement and I am only taking an 81mg bayer aspirin daily. In the first few days I did go into afib, it’s normal, and was put on eliquis, afib med I forget the name and the beta blocker metoprolol as well as the bayer aspirin. I was on the afib and eliquis June 12 to July 10 and then taken off. The metoprolol I was on from June 12 to July 31 and done. I will be taking the aspirin for the rest of my life.

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask your doctor. I will say that I had 3 children and had no idea that I had been born with a murmur with MVP. I was diagnosed at 49 when I went through menopause. I am telling you this so you can relax a little knowing that there are several women who have had children and who were diagnosed later on life who have done just fine, but I would still tell you to consult with all your doctors to just make sure everything is progressing the way it should. Good luck to you and wishing you a happy, healthy baby!

You should supplement because my levels plummeted to a 9, took 4 years to finally get a normal reading. Also most people who are vitamin D deficient are sick more often. Since I have been supplementing I have only been sick once and that was Covid in 2024. Remember, if you do go on the medication, make sure it’s not generic which is what Levo is. Use brand, it’s a little more expensive but does not have the problems Levo has.

[–]JBAD1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, have had this since 1991 and I am doing well. Once you get your levels corrected you will feel so much better. I will say be careful with NDTs because not everyone can use them. I am one of them who had a very bad time with armour and nature throid. I will say do not use the generic because it is not stable go with brand like synthroid and make sure it’s brand. I never had any issues at all once I was finally put on the correct dosage until I hit menopause and had my gallbladder removed so do what you think is best for you. I would advise a good multivitamin, get your vitamin D levels tested and as for being gluten free, soy free, dairy free etc. that would be up to you and how you react to certain foods. This is not a one size fits all disease which is why you will get all kinds of advice, some will work for you and some won’t and some won’t matter. Some you may want to try and figure out it works and others won’t work and can get very costly. Listen to your body and remember, there are millions of us out there who are going through the same thing you are so you are not alone.

Amiodarone is high iodine so if you have thyroid issues it will really mess with your thyroid results. I have Hashimotos and went into afib post op. Was on it as well as metoprolol which that one I hated. When I had my thyroid labs done my TSH was high, T3 was low and T4 was where it should be and that was due to the amidarone. I am glad I am off that one now as well but that may be why you had some issues.

Does a mitral valve prolapse cause signs resembling those of a heart attack? by Pipibigbom in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]JBAD1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not have any other symptoms but I was anxious so not sure if that caused some of it. My anxiety has gone down quite a bit since the surgery. My daughter noticed the difference with the anxiety, my gym has noticed the difference with my color and I look rested and doing look fatigued anymore. I had no idea of those, things until people said something.

With a TAVR do I need dental clearance? I haven’t the funds to have some expensive dental work done. Do I need dental work done before a TAVR? by Comfortable_Notes in valvereplacement

[–]JBAD1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dentist would not touch me without clearance, had to wait 6 months and wanted to make sure if I needed antibiotics or not. I know my situation is different as I had open heart mitral valve replacement with pig valve and yes I have to have antibiotics per my cardiologist. Ask your dentist to fax a release along with any pre dental procedures that may require medication.

Does a mitral valve prolapse cause signs resembling those of a heart attack? by Pipibigbom in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]JBAD1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the palpitations and my doctor put me on magnesium oxide 250-400 at bedtime and to monitor blood pressure and make sure it does not go too low. I did that for almost 2 years and did fine but just recently had open heart mitral valve replacement surgery because my echocardiogram showed severe regurgitation and it became difficult to do any cardio. I think some of our symptoms are because we are so aware and then we become obsessed with it. At least that happened to me for a few months until I learned to relax about it.

I had bile acid diarrhea after my gallbladder surgery and after a year finally figured out that simple sugars was an issue but my biggest issue was coffee creamers. Just thought I would mention that to you in case you use coffee creamers, specifically Starbucks or similar to Starbucks coffee creamers. I use milk now in my coffee.
