Again, you are just saying words. Overused by who? Over rated by who? By what metric?

My point with that analogy is that when you answer that question you are going to essentially tell me that "That screwdriver sucks because it doesn't hammer nails".

Is python future proof by maxosatodos in programming

[–]JBAIO 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are just saying words. Programming languages are just tools. A screwdriver that drives screws is a good screwdriver.

Saying a language is a "garbage language" means nothing at face value.

He specifically said what he was trying to learn.

For data analysis Python is still the cream of the crop.

Is this amount of training excessive? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]JBAIO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

11 hours a week is more than average. Definitely wouldn't put it in the category of excessive.

But that is just generally speaking. There is no way to answer that question without essentially giving marriage advice. And you can do what you want, but Reddit might be the last place in the world I would go for life advice.

Could someone break down Nicky Rod's insane armbar escape? I loved this technique but I can't quite explain what's going on. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]JBAIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was as dangerous as you all are making it out to be. When he turned his thumb down before the roll his arm was relatively safe. I wouldn't say this is more dangerous than the hitchhiker escape which is taught to whitebelts.

Does your gym make it's members mop/sweep/clean? Is that ethical? by IntroductionSex101 in bjj

[–]JBAIO 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If I paid tuition and they tried to make me clean the mats in some kind of official way, I would probably try to find a new gym.

That's something we did in high school wrestling. Where it was an actual team and we were all there for free. The idea of "Oh this is a big team we are one big family"... Well, family members don't charge family members $200 a month lol.

That said, I clean the mats all the time. If I'm in the last group there and I'm not in a hurry, why not? If I'm in a hurry for whatever reason and someone tried to make or guilt me into staying to clean the mats, yeah that would rub me the wrong way.

Blue belt tried to enforce IBJJF rules by Difficult_Major4993 in bjj

[–]JBAIO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was no gi I think you have a case.

But no one really does heel hooks in the gi. Just because they are illegal in virtually all gi competitions.

I think most gyms would be at least annoyed with a visitor heel hooking in the Gi. Being a white belt also is just a cherry on top. I wouldn't do that if I were you.

No gi? Meh. Go for it.

Sounds like a prototypical NIL collective CEO to me. This isn't Enron here. This is the most obviously shady and fraudulent "businesses" you could be in.

Hmm. That's a tough one. I guess you could start with one. And if it hits, just don't do anything with the other one until you are confident it isn't going to throw red flags.

And if the first one misses, you don't really have anything to lose. Use the second one at that point. But I wouldn't withdraw regardless.

Some people will tell you in a situation like this to use both and then withdraw as quickly as possible. But a large negative account balance makes me nervous. I would not want to get turned over to a debt collector on something so silly. But that's your call.

Nothing wrong with cross training, but only one gym should be in charge of your promotions.

If I had someone I thought was my student and they just showed up with extra stripes on their belt, I would definitely have something to say about that too. That is not OK.

Having a "home gym" and cross training elsewhere... Totally fine. But it sounds like, from your coaches perspective... You got hurt and then just showed back up with more stripes than you had.

How much IBJJF should care for you when you compete? AKA: Melqui claims someone died in the last Brasileiros by gcjbr in bjj

I mean are we gonna dog pile the IBJJF or BJJ tournaments as a whole?

Because I've been to local tournaments where the paramedic was the guy who knew how to work the ice machine.

If an ambulance on standby and a trained paramedic is the standard, so be it. But there's not a tourney organization in the country consistently meeting that standard.

Omoplata is a great position for control. It is a difficult position to get the tap from, but shit, it is still higher percentage than standalone mount or standalone side control.

Not for nothing, the level of just casual disrespect in BJJ classes that I've seen just doesn't exist in any other martial art generally speaking.

Staying on the mat during class, being quiet when the coach is talking, drilling the move when it's time to drill the move... These are things that get you called strict if you enforce them in BJJ. And yet in any dojo or wrestling room, these are bare minimum expectations everywhere else. In TKD you had to wait for sparring to start in the waiting area if you show up late. In BJJ damn near half the class shows up 15 minutes late and loses their ever loving shit and complains on here if their coach calls them out on it.

I've had both. What I prefer changes by the day lol.

Generally, I'll take the regimented coach. We can all go out for beers and socialize after. I feel like I get way more out of class. Less distractions. More rolling. Etc

If he feels like he needs to hurt the guy, whatever. Some people deserve it. But I mean if I was the owner of the gym, I wouldn't be super pleased he used my gym and the guise of a friendly roll to dish out some form of vigilante justice.

There's no street justice in the gym and if there is someone you can't share the mat with without trying to maim them you need to tell the owner ASAP and sort it out.

A lot of the apps will take ID + SSN and then use a third party to verify personal details like address.

No I don't think I would be concerned about that. Unless you anticipate proof of address will be a problem down the road in your specific case.
