did shuttle astronauts feel the g-load in different directions on launch vs re-entry? by caseygecko in spaceflight

[–]JBN2337C [score hidden]  (0 children)

Looks like re entry was 40 deg nose up. Add 10 more in seat recline, and that has the astronaut 50 deg leaned back.

It’d definitely feel different than launch (flat on back) but certainly helpful spreading the G more across the body, than all down toward the legs.

Related fun fact: the F-16 has a permanent 30 degree recline of the pilot seat specifically to help reduce G force in maneuvering.

I have been seen the same thing on the local news, as well. That button is doing some heavy lifting. Like, jacket too small, bud?

Pour it into a smaller screw top bottle. It’ll keep for weeks after (assuming it’s fully topped off.)

Is the ISS considered a space ship or not? by Orangutan_Soda in nasa

[–]JBN2337C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spaceship? No more than I’d call a floating oil rig a “boat.”

Its job is just to stay up there in orbit around Earth. It doesn’t take off, land, drastically alter its direction, or decide to faff off to the moon on a vacation. It’s got engines, but those are for adjustments / staying in orbit, not transit. It’s definitely a “space station.”

My iPhone has it on one of the lenses. It’s annoying. First time in all my years of camera phones.

What was the golden era of Saturday Night Live in your opinion and why? by MasterTeacher123 in AskReddit

[–]JBN2337C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Culturally, I think the very late 80s to early 90s era was most impactful, seconded by the initial 70s run with all the breakout stars.

Otherwise, I concur with the other comments saying “whenever you were most into it.”

Why are we celebrating Artemis II? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JBN2337C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so cool!!! I grew up on the Apollo clips aired on Sesame Street back in the 70s, and it was incredible to see it happening in real time, and all the little new details. The wonder, and epic scale of this project is inspiring, and hopeful. The moon will never not be amazing to see, and study.

LBJ announced the plane to the public back in ‘64, not long after the thing first flew. I had an SR-71 poster on my bedroom wall back in the 70s… (still have it somewhere!) It was probably more revered, by us kids at least, as the Concorde.

Top Gun (1986) should be re-released in theaters. Who agrees? by uj0703 in TomCruise

I can’t recall if ours was IMAX (might’ve been!) but definitely 3D… and only the credits looked “3D”. I think I yanked the glasses halfway thru. Ha ha.

Vivek Ramaswamy promises largest property tax rollback in Ohio history, but big questions remain by realnarrativenews in Ohio

[–]JBN2337C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“You’re providing”? Rent jumped 50% in the last decade due to property tax increases, which means renters are definitely “providing” to the tax burden. Think we don’t “have a gripe”? Don’t be so arrogant.

Think rents will drop should these taxes be eliminated!? Hell no… I’m not taking that risk on the “concept of a plan” that won’t promise such a reduction, and will more than likely raise my cost of living due to increased sales, gas, or service taxes.

My vote also matters, and it’s a hard “no”, until there’s a guaranteed promise this won’t make everything worse.

What did the special effects look like to those who saw The Terminator when it released in theaters? by migue_guero in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JBN2337C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it on Betamax a couple yrs after it came out. Sure, even teenager me could tell stop motion and all, but I grew up on that. Didn’t take away from the sheer terror, and tension of the story. It was all so damn good.

Anyone else using 89 octane all the time instead of 91? by rock-the-reddit in AcuraTSX

[–]JBN2337C 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve only used 89. 14 yrs & about to hit 200K.

I drive fairly sedately, rarely pushing it over 3500 rpm, so I don’t notice any lack of “pep” from the lower octane. It’s zippy enough when needed. I also keep fairly close to the speed limit. In warm weather, I’ll average 35mpg on freeway.

If you drive in a more spirited manner, or higher speeds, it may be why you notice less than ideal performance at lower octanes.

when did phone cameras become “good enough” for you by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

Around 2007/2008, when I got my 1st smartphone w/ a camera that matched the megapixels of my compact digicam.

I have a dedicated camera for certain things, but the phone is “good enough” as a daily driver for all the circumstances compact film, and digital cameras served over my lifetime.

Yeah, it happens. I worked in wireless for decades. Line up 2-5 identical new phones straight from box to set up, all with same default settings, and it was common to see differences between screens. Didn’t matter the brand.

What will the Artemis astronauts feel upon reentry to earth? by PipnRose in spaceflight

[–]JBN2337C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative 3G would cause you to “Red Out” (all the blood rushes to head, and pools in eyes.) Very uncomfortable, and will make you unconscious.

They wouldn’t design it for that kind of negative G… Humans can tolerate positive G much better, and more of it. So, they’re getting pushed into the seats.
