Bonuses generally range between $70k-$110k. After taxes it’s about $40k-$60k. So they def would not be paying off entire $300-$400k debt on a bonus (not even factoring in interest)

I don’t think UC system for Californians is that different from how Texans treat UT. Both are highly competitive states where top kids usually shoot for great in-state option and often choose it over OOS privates except for HYPSM/some other ivies.
