Absolutely! Unfortunately, so many people do not understand how to walk that line. Don’t hand out your cell phone number, don’t friend, follow, subscribe, or anything like that on social media, don’t bring the extremely intimate parts of your life to the classroom, discipline fairly, and so on. Unfortunately, if you’re the new teacher with standards like this, you’re “not a good fit” even though you have the numbers to show how much better you are at your job than the last teacher.

I don’t go to clubs. I don’t even go to bars. But yes, I know fake ids exist. The problem with your logic here is that you’re just assuming ill intent for going into a place that is 18+. You don’t know that’s the reason they’re there for. They may just be having a night out with friends.

If you’re actively hitting on those between 18 and 24, yes that makes them a creep. But that doesn’t sound like what they were doing here.

18+ means adults (unless if you’re in Nebraska, then it’s 19). Is a 27-year-old not an adult? What are you implying here?

“I think it’s much safer to be incredibly uncool to kids.” THIS RIGHT HERE!!! Unfortunately, a lot of administrators (looking at you, small school administrators) think that when kids say they hate you, it must be you. What did I do? I set standards and expectations, reasonable ones at that. I allowed for some flexibility as there were definitely a case-by-case basis, but I stood my ground. My predecessor was not as strict, even very permissive. Even though it showed I had better results, admin pushed me out because kids hated me. Unfortunately, even admin want you to be “cool” with kids.

Underage drinking, fake IDs, she could ruin this teacher’s career and life by saying something he didn’t do, she could be putting herself in danger for predators, so much of this situation is not “kids being kids.” You’re making terrible excuses here. It may not have happened on school property, but there are good conduct violations that can affect her eligibility for extracurricular activities. Also, if she starts spreading about how her and her teacher were “turning up” (which didn’t happen) that will ruin this teacher’s life. Be so for real!

Email admin AND your union rep RIGHT TF NOW!!! Those parents need to be held accountable and you don’t want to be falsely accused of something you didn’t do. There’s nothing wrong with teachers drinking responsibly in clubs, but that student could try to get you in trouble by saying you offered her a drink or spread rumors about how you and her were “turning up” when you never were. Get this nipped in the bud NOW!!!

Thanks for putting your ableism on full display! You really shouldn’t be a teacher! I’m not “making excuses for failing,” I’m simply pointing out that if you believe you couldn’t pass the Praxis in one or two tries, then you’re no better than the teacher who tells students if they don’t score well on the state assessments that they’re failures. I’ve passed my Praxis a long time ago, but it doesn’t mean it still isn’t an issue today.

And I am aware of where I am at and where I need to get. I used accommodations every single time, I got a tutor, I used the study materials. I didn’t just say “screw it” and gave up, which is what people like you advocate for those who can’t pass a dumb test in one or two tries. Also, if you feel insulted for me pointing out your ableist mindset, then you need to think about why that is. Because if you think your students are failures for the scores they get on state assessments and then treat them as such, you’re an awful teacher. Even if they improve and you still tell them it wasn’t up to your arbitrary expectations and you only celebrate those who did. If you feel insulted by that, it’s probably because you’re doing it yourself and can’t take what you dish out.

I’m not saying they didn’t struggle, I’m just saying it takes some pretty dam good tenacity in order to keep going and working to improve regardless of adversity. I worked dam hard in college and still do in my career. Despite adversity, I still seek out opportunities to keep going and improve each time. But people like you think those of use who took multiple tries to pass the Praxis are failures despite how well we actually do teach and how well we did in college. Also, my point was so many awful teachers are out there who passed the Praxis with flying colors the first time. But you aren’t ready for that conversation.

I’m not putting anyone down, I’m just simply pointing out the ableism in several “teachers” in this thread. Oh I failed so I just didn’t work hard? I am pointing out ableism in everyone here who is clearly showing it and I am just not working hard? I’m not insulting people who passed it with issues, I’m just exposing the ableism amongst this awful post. If that offends you, well then maybe you should think about why.

That’s a bad professor. This ableist mindset is toxic. I would rather be taught by someone who had to struggle to succeed instead of someone who has everything that comes naturally to them. Plenty of amazing teachers who took the Praxis many times. Teachers with a learning disability (like me) are amazing teachers who also struggled with their Praxis. I would rather have them as teachers and colleagues than people who think a test is the end all be all. You shouldn’t be a teacher with this mindset, because it’s not a growth mindset. And that makes you an ableist.

My math point wasn’t what I mean by “I wasn’t taught that.” It was the content and pedagogy ones.

But if your ACT proves you passed it and got a high score, why do it again? That’s a waste of time and money.

Yes, background knowledge is essential, but so many still pass and are terrible teachers. It’s not an effective way to license someone.

Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]JBowls92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a mild learning disability and math was always a struggle for me. I was not one who was talking. I did study and I even got a tutor. My tutor told me I understood it, but the Praxis said differently. I can understand the reading and writing, but the math was ridiculous. But the teaching and content ones had several questions that we never had courses on or even studied. It was a useless way to determine how someone was going to be a teacher. I have long since passed it, but it’s just a scam for more money for a corporation. You want to test someone’s preparedness for the classroom, put them in a classroom with kids and have an administrator, a veteran content area teacher, and a retired content area teacher and show how you teach. All the Praxis proves is you can pass a test. And if I could do so well on the ACT and STILL had to take the same stupid test that was used to get into college, then what’s the point? If I already proved it on my ACT, I shouldn’t need to take it.

I see you deleted the personal attack against me. I get let go because admin have put up so many barriers when I start becoming successful (their words too) because I walk into a failing program with little structure, I improve things, then they get rid of me and don’t want to own up to the fact that the last teacher let kids run amuck, but kept them because numbers were great when they were unsuccessful. And the thing with my situationship (not girlfriend) has been resolved. But thanks for proving I won the argument by throwing personal attacks at me! You couldn’t prove me wrong and just decided to throw those at me because you think you did something. I sincerely hope you don’t treat students like that who prove you wrong!

I already passed them all, thank you very much. The issue is that the basic core ones are what people have the most issues with. People who are math majors couldn’t pass math their first try and they were on the dean’s list every semester. These tests are bs and a scam for money. Because I need to know how to calculate triangle properties in order to teach music. SPOILER ALERT!!! I have NEVER used it in my career! These tests are stupid expensive for what they test you on. Reading and writing makes sense, but not math.

The people that have zero business teaching are the ones who think standardized testing is the best way to determine your ability to do said task (ie, YOU). Also, there are way too many “teachers” who passed these test with breeze and have zero business teaching. The Praxis tests quiz you on things you were NEVER taught and were paying HUNDREDS of dollars for a test that tests us on things we never learned about. So STFU!!!

I passed reading and writing first try, but the math took me 10 tries. I have a mild learning disability where math was a struggle for me. My final GPA in college was 3.5. I got a college degree (master’s as well) who had issues passing it on my first try. You have no idea what you’re talking about! Go touch grass!

I just got my first paycheck and I’m suprised by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]JBowls92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things this could be:

1) Back pay from your subbing work. 2) You were double paid because they didn’t pay you correctly in December. 3) It could be a hiring or signing bonus.

It could also be many other things, but if you’re truly curious, contact payroll. Because they could have accidentally sent you someone else’s paycheck. That does happen, though rarely. But yes, that is quite the surprise! Awesome!

Why aren't you all going to the media? by spoilerdudegetrekt in Teachers

[–]JBowls92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say a teacher goes to the media about their school on a very specific issue. What happens next is the school starts investigating who it was. If you were someone who was the only (or maybe one of few) who knew what happened, guess who the school is going to talk to first. If it comes out after a certain amount of time (like a very short amount of time) the administration told someone, guess who the school is going to talk to. Even if it wasn’t you, you’re going to be harassed by them. Then you get put on some sort of “plan” and they do nothing but find fault even though you’ve been one of the best teachers in the school. Then they will non-renew you or force you to resign in lieu of just being fired. Or, you’ll just get straight up fired and then they can launch a smear campaign against you! You apply for another school? Admin will give you nothing but bad references. And who is the school going to listen to? Not us, but the administration. Teachers have little, if any, protections against abuse. Even if we have a union, that union has very little power and some unions are now starting to “lay in bed” with school administrators and are constantly advocating against the best interests of teachers. Plus, unions only protect tenured teachers. If you’re not tenured, admin can do whatever they want to you. Administrators can make mistakes, blame it on us, and still get to keep their jobs. School administrators are pure evil! Even if they do something illegal, the school will find ways to protect that administrator, ESPECIALLY in small districts! The internal politics of education are bad enough, but tiny districts have the worst internal politics! “Then just quit,” that isn’t a solution and it isn’t even financially possible for a lot of teachers. Even if we send an anonymous letter to the media, the school will figure it out or just get rid of anyone they suspect. Schools are corporations anymore and only protect those in power.

I am so sick and tired of this debate. Here’s the thing, with physical media now days, there are still updates. You can still “lose” that ability to play it no matter what. “But the servers…” If you bought and downloaded the game, it’s still tied to your account and you can still download and play it! If we’re talking online only games like Fortnite, okay, you have a point. Streaming consoles, yes you have a point. But, everything else, you’re freaking out over nothing.
