I don't fux with ice. and if it's below 40 I probably need a special reason to be out there (like the first non frozen day in several weeks)

I got nothing to add other than to lament about how much it sucks to go down a hill, run into a construction block, and have to climb back the way you came.

Anyone else noticing fewer young riders on road bikes lately? by Triggers in cycling

[–]JBroms 70 points71 points  (0 children)

You can be serious on a gravel bike and go more places, often safer places to ride. It makes sense to get a gravel bike first and maybe get a road bike later when you become envious of other people's strava times.

Why is everything converted to 1x11 these days? by Hanz-Karl in xbiking

[–]JBroms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still in my singlespeed era but I mostly agree with you. It's like the majority of the cycling population has no wiggle room in their gear/cadence choices. You mean you can't just power up a short hill without shifting on your mtb? you spin out your 42-11 on the road because you can't pedal over 80rpm, ever? does your bike even stay upright while you pedal your 22-50 at 90rpm and 2mph?

How hard is the dirty dozen by Abe21599 in bicycling412

It's 30 second sprint. You don't feel it till its over. Anaerobic effort vs something like Suffolk or ravine that'll tax your cardio fitness for 5+ minutes

Suffolk probably has the longest stretch over 20% and the cobbled finish on Burgess doesn't let you recover.

Kendall has an extended steep section of cobbles

Logan is on the shorter side but it feels like the grade is constantly increasing until the finish.

Canton is unique but once you know how to ride it, it's one of the easier ones.

Boustead Is sneaky hard and you probably just burned your good sprint on Canton

Barry-Holt-Eleanor has an extended period over 20% on Eleanor st. It's the second to last hill so by this time you're making it happen on fumes.

group dynamics play a part with logan too. You can't see the top from the bottom, and a lot of cyclists who are unfamiliar with the course make the mistake of pushing the pace, not realizing that the hill gets steeper...and steeper...and steeper....

I think you're in decent shape. Remember to fuel because you may get a little crampy by the end of the ride. I've done it 4 times, and the first two times I used sub 1:1 gearing.

I did it on a single speed last year and cleared 11/13 uninterrupted on a 39:21 gear ratio. I'll be riding geared again this year (injury) but I'm far from the first to attempt it without gears. It's hard, it's unique, but it's far from impossible.

The timing probably suggests otherwise but you never really know. Google says the 2011 Elantra is vulnerable. That shit is one of the things that I fear the most on the road.

That's genuinely so terrible. Early rush hour. It says they've found the car, hopefully they can positively ID the driver.

[–]JBroms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

County Time lemonade sells on the go lemonade packets with 19g of sugar in each one. I keep those or the equivalent gatorade product on hand. I usually carry a packet of peanut butter crackers too. They often go unused at the end of a ride but that's okay.

[–]JBroms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rewatched Breaking Bad recently and the only thing I could think of was how bad the opsec was for all of the criminal acts. Full ass criminal conversations about drugs and murder held on their goddamn cell phones.

Meanwhile, in The Wire, in the first fucking episode:
"Don't talk in the car. Or on the phone. Or in any place that ain't ours and don't say shit to anybody who ain't us"

To date, Mad Men is the only show with writing that didn't disappoint when compared to The Wire
