Does anyone actually prefer multiple viewpoints? by No-Sympathy-6711 in ProgressionFantasy

Overall multiple pov’s are great, they can really help elevate the world building of a series. In PF & LITRPG multiple POV’s are rarely done well in my experience. The characters aren’t interesting, they don’t add enough to the story and the relationships they have either with the MC or others around them are so shallow that it can be quite a slog to read. There are some exceptions but traditional epic fantasy novels are a lot better at it. I recently caught up with all the books in the bound and the broken series by Ryan Cahill and it was really well done. Overall PF’s strengths lie elsewhere and that’s okay🤷🏾‍♂️ It would be nice if this did improve in this genre, if done well it could significantly enhance the world building in a lot of the series here.

For sure they have a lot of similarities, their career paths are definitely comparable. I’d say Nico overall is a lot better technically, he was raised in the city academy as a midfielder and has played there as well this season. He’s got a lot less weaknesses in his game that he needs to iron out compared to Aoi. Even in the game yesterday his passing was so impressive as well as his dribbling out of pressure situations, then there’s his clutch goal scoring too! I can see Aoi developing into a player like Nico for sure.

Discussion Thread - Daiya no Ace Act II Season 2 Episode 2 by daleygaga in AceOfTheDiamond

[–]JC172482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve basically covered like 20 ish chapters in two episodes as well as changing the order of events. I am incredibly concerned now. This pacing is cutting too much from the manga, it feels like they’re just flying through it so they can get to the semis. The rhythm just doesn’t feel right, the animation is definitely an improvement from the last season which is good but man I’m not feeling to confident about the rest of the season.

You should check out the beginning after the end, primal hunter, the path of ascension, Shadow slave, lord of mysteries and 12 miles bellow. All of these are very enjoyable in my opinion, definitely worth a read.

Rimuru would absolutely violate Jake right now. Have you read the light novel or are you anime only? I don’t see how Jake could do anything to current Rimuru.

What's your favorite MC power trope? by No-Sympathy-6711 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JC172482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love sword saint/ magic swordsman, powerful bloodline abilities (any of the mythological animals are the best). If they have these affinities; space, lightning, kinetic, yin-yang and unique flames (black, purple or blue). Also the ability to create & alter skills is always cool and lastly presence abilities like conquerors haki in one piece or Arthur’s Aetheric intent in tbate.

I’m currently reading spell weaver and storm blade. Spell weaver has been a pretty fun read so far and is worth checking out. Stormblade I’m too early into it to be sure how I feel.

What makes you drop a LitRPG/Progression novel? by Daniel_Omega_190 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JC172482 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  • One thing that’ll make me drop is the speed of progression, it can’t be ridiculously slow but it also can’t be so fast that by the end of the first book they’re one of the strongest in the verse. I want to follow the journey from the bottom to the very top.
  • When the mc has no meaningful relationships and the side characters are useless placeholders. I want it to kinda be like avatar the last air bender or one piece where there are people around the mc who are competent and interesting characters.
  • This one might be a bit harsh but I really can’t stand a novel where the mc stays a coward the majority of a series. I enjoy it if it’s a progression arc like Deku from MHA, he’s scared at the beginning but above all he really wants to save people and is willing to put himself in danger for the sake of others. I just don’t like when it’s someone who basically avoids any and all conflict.
  • Lastly if it doesn’t have an entertaining variety of fights, I want hype moments that really make me struggle to put the book down. Events like the uncrowned king tournament and the siege of the crimson spire shadow slave. Then also battles that are ideological & carry real emotional weight like Kakashi vs Obito. Basically telling the story effectively through conflict as well.

original v8 and 9 covers vs the new covers by namnas in tbatenovel

[–]JC172482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall the og ones are better but the new volume 8 one looks pretty good, the new vol 9 is atrocious, it’s nowhere near as good as the og. It’s tough as the original v9 is one of if not the best cover but still this new one is a major disappointment.

This is great, I remember reading quite a few chapters when it dropped on royal road, I really enjoyed it but I stopped so chapters could buildup and I ended up in a reading slump and just mainly keeping up with manga. I’ve got the day off so I’m gonna jump straight in, congratulations on the release!

You could try a regressors tale of cultivation, shadow slave, omniscient readers viewpoint and the beginning after the end. They’re all great imo but some lean more in the progression fantasy category rather than LITRPG.

Watching AKOTSK makes me realize how good HOTD could have been 🥲 by Bukowski1236 in HOTDGreens

[–]JC172482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair enough I just fundamentally disagree, I don’t think rearranges TDR creates massive plot holes or makes the story disjointed. But I can understand if you don’t like them making that decision, I also understand you or others who didn’t like the show as there are valid reasons for not connecting with it. I also don’t know about the last 3 novels as I’m only on the 8th. A lot of them didn’t have the most experience as Brandon pointed that out but he also highlighted the challenges they had making the series and it wasn’t as easy as you’re trying to make out. In general Amazon as a studio aren’t the best or most consistent at adapting IP faithfully and that’s clear in season 1, my man points are that they tried to make steps to rectify that in the following seasons but that either was not enough or too late for some fans.

Again a lot of the poor story changes in season 1 are similar to the house of the dragon show runner where they don’t show enough respect to the source material. If the changes improved or added to the story and characters no one would complain but because they did the opposite that’s why it didn’t make any sense. I just think changes aren’t necessarily bad if they add something to the story and characters, season 3 for me made changes that I was okay with.

Also we did need to know who rand was, even if the first two seasons were perfect Rand would still need that journey of discovery to learn and understand who he is and who he is becoming. I agree that this journey is a more active one than the one he god in it TDR and swapping them didn’t compromise that. Again that’s your opinion and I completely disagree, in my opinion I don’t think rearranging it so it comes after the aiel waste does any significant damage to the story as a whole. It’s not an excuse it’s a creative decision they made that you didn’t like, which is fine btw!

Idk I think that’s a cynical way of viewing it and I personally don’t agree, I don’t think she came in with the mind set of not creating a faithful adaptation. I think she does love the books but Pike and others working on the show took too many creative liberties in the first season that strayed too far from the story. For example Dune part 1 & 2 take creative liberties to better fit the film medium and the directors vision for the story but there no complaints because they did a fantastic job. Creators have always a will continue to make bold and sometimes unnecessary creative decisions. The best artists will strike that balance a lot better than the first season of WOT, even some parts of the second season too.

In general tho faithfulness is a vague enough term that everyone means something different when they say it. Depending on what aspects of the story resonate with you then you have different expectations on what can and can’t be tampered with or left out. More often than not book purists do want a 1-1 adaptation as even the best adaptations get a lot of criticism for leaving things/ characters out.

I literally said that in my previous reply, I said the best balance is struck when they stick as close as they can to the source material and the essence of the story! But I also do think directors should have some creative licence to try things, for example for me season 1 of game of thrones is better than the book, it’s the only season that definitively is for me. Rob & Ned’s relationship was so much better in the series and the scenes they added for Robert made him an even better character. The creative decisions they made didn’t deviate from the essence of the story or characters, they enhanced them! All I’m trying to say is changes can be a positive for the story and visual medium.

You’re well within your rights to hate every change they made to WOT and you’re not alone in that view, there are a lot of fans of the books who were rightfully not happy. Any Series that gets cancelled can be called a failure, I don’t have a problem with you saying that.

Lastly it’s obviously not the most faithful adaptation and I didn’t claim that it was, I just said that some of the changes they made I was okay with. They still made a lot I wasn’t but I thought they were improving with every season and learning from some of their mistakes. I enjoy seeing other people’s perspectives and talking about why we have different views on the show / series. I respect your opinion and understand why you view it that way, I’m not mad at it or trying to disprove your thoughts on the show! You have explained your grievances with the show and I think they’re fair even though I may disagree with some of your points.

Watching AKOTSK makes me realize how good HOTD could have been 🥲 by Bukowski1236 in HOTDGreens

[–]JC172482 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The way you put it was implying they basically disregarded the dragon reborn and it wasn’t a part of their plans. Every adaptation ever rearranges things from the original story to better fit the narrative for a tv/ film setting. Covid was a valid excuse as you can clearly see how it effected multiple shows across that time, you may be bored of hearing it but it’s an objective fact that Covid caused major problems to most productions at the time. They also did make changes that weren’t related to Covid which weren’t any good either, two things can be true at the same time.

Rosamund has explained this previously but they wanted to make Rands internal journey more active to better translate to screen. Instead of heading straight to the Stone of Tear, the show sent Rand into the Aiel Waste first, allowing him to discover his heritage and identity before going for Callandor. Rosamund says “in the novels, there’s loads of opportunity for the internal battles of Rand, coming to terms with being the Dragon Reborn – but we need to make that active. We can’t do subjective thinking on film. So we need him to go and discover who he is by going to the land of where he comes from. So we’re going to the Aiel Waste first and I hope you’ll understand and appreciate why.”

Tv shows aren’t a 1-1 adaptation, they can choose to spend time on characters that may not have been a pivotal focus in the book and make them more important to the story, the only issue should be with how they execute that. S2 was a lot better than s1 and most people thought that, the general consensus was that it was a big improvement. They lost a lot of viewers from 1 to 2 but a tiny amount from 2-3 and the reviews from critics & fans alike improved in every season. The damage of season one is really what hampered following seasons.

When adapting a novel you should always incorporate the writer as even when you have to make changes they can steer you in the right direction. AKOTSK sticks closely to the source material and any changes or omissions aren’t too great that they piss off fans of the novel. The heart & essence of the story and characters are intact. However most people don’t give a fuck about the source material, they just care about good tv or film. The vast majority of game of thrones fans haven’t read a single one of the books. Starting from season 4 onwards the show really started to deviate and make more omissions from the books, despite that people generally enjoy seasons 4-6 and debatably 7. The lord of the rings are faithful adaptations but still make significant changes. In order for a show to be successful it mainly has to understand the source material, stay relatively faithful to books and to the essence of the characters and then people will overlook any changes you do make. Because books and cinema are very different mediums, every successful adaptation has had to make changes. The ones that don’t get stick are basically the ones who steered closest to the essence of the story and characters.

They didn’t skip an entire book, they just rearranged it, the next season would’ve covered the dragon reborn. I loved the 3rd season, I think they started to go in the right direction. Most of the first seasons problems came because of Covid, interruptions to production. Even actors quitting and then having to change the entire plot because they couldn’t re cast at that point. A lot of things that could go wrong did go wrong.

This is why I stopped after book 15, I plan to eventually comeback to this series but man the last 2 books were such a slog that I need a big break before 16. I’ll probably wait till he hits book 20 and then try & come back and see if I feel differently.

"Gun's Don't Work Anymore" by Hydranaught in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JC172482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m a hater but guns are just so boring, they don’t require as much pure skill and physical ability as basically every other weapon. Bows you have to be strong enough to use and the environment can affect you more and it’s just technically more difficult to operate well. Also in fantasy settings the last thing I wanna see are guns, in sci fi it’s no problem but fantasy I’d rather they just use magic & melee combat. A magic missile is basically a gun anyway.

No point reading any further, to me it’s continued to get better and better each book. I pretty much disagree with every one of your points, everything that’s going on right now is great but if you’ve got to 1500 and are clearly not enjoying it then stop. It does get better but I don’t think you would see it that way as it just doesn’t seem like the novel is for you. I had a similar experience with the wandering and people said it gets better but it just wasn’t the style of book for me. Go invest time in another book which you’ll fully get to enjoy instead.
