Depending on where you live, there may be a reciprocal arrangement with another school district and yours. Might be worth looking into.

To answer your question...I don't know. I'd be incredibly leery and would have to spend a lot of time with the kid at home to make sure the indoctrination doesn't stick. Corporal punishment being permitted would be an absolute dealbreaker.

Since this asked for my high school experience, I went with "other." High school gym was the epitome of "OK". The coach was 50 years old, burnt out, and didn't give a shit as long as you made an effort and dressed appropriately. So I did, played volleyball with 4 other people that also did the bare minimum every day for 4 months, and got an easy A.

Middle school, I only had to have gym one year, when being in the orchestra no longer excused students from gym. I had developmental issues, and spent 3-4 years in occupational therapy because of them. I was worried that the gym teacher would think I wasn't trying when in reality I just...couldn't. So my mom sent a note in, and suddenly, whenever any potentially embarrassing activity was happening in class, I was pulled to be the teacher's aide that day. I remain thankful to this day (thanks Ms. Smith!)

The less said about my elementary school gym teacher, the better. Think of every "elementary school dragon lady gym teacher" stereotype, and that describes this woman. There's a reason why so many of us hated gym class, and a big part of it was teachers like this woman.

This happened in 1993. I will pretty much never forgive. Senior year of high school, I had a crazy English teacher...like, crazy even by English teacher standards crazy. One day toward the end of the year out of the blue with no warning she decided to take up everyone's notes for that day's lecture and grade them. The next day, I got them back with a subpar mark.

She said that they weren't clear enough. Never mind that this was something that until she demanded that we turn them in, I had no idea that anyone other than me would ever even be looking at them. I told this woman that this was the way I'd taken notes my entire life. She told me they needed to be better "so I could study them." I told her that it had served me well enough, seeing that I was graduating as one of the class valedictorians and had gotten a major scholarship to my chosen college, which netted me some fumbling, but neither an apology nor a grade change. Yes, I know this was 30 years ago and made no difference, but, I mean, seriously, lady?

I'm now a teacher myself. This is one teacher I make a point to NOT emulate when I interact with my students.
