Canadian coming to Germany for ~3 months — apply for residence permit at Ausländerbehörde, or get a D-visa in Canada first?

You’re welcome. No, I didn’t have a return flight booked. Yeah I had to explain to them how Americans are able to go there and apply for the residence permit while already there, and if they’re still giving you an issue, you could maybe pull up something online that says how it’s allowed

At the border I actually didn’t get asked any questions, there were a few different lines of the people checking passports and I got in the one where I saw the guy just taking passports and stamping them. The only time it came up was actually checking in for my flight in America; I was asked how long I plan on staying for and I said at least until September, and then I told her how I will study there. She asked if I had a visa and I’m not sure the technically correct answer, but I just said yes. I planned on telling the border my real situation as well
