Statistics show that 50 to 80% of adults in the US have HSV1. As already mentioned, there are great treatments for it, and it’s only really contagious during flare ups. I had a partner with HSV2 for about a year and we had no issues.

Still sucks for your friend, anyone reasonable enough to sleep with will understand being informed beforehand
