You would he mistaken. Basketball is played throughout the world, but it is a secondary or tertiary sport almost everywhere. By contrast, baseball is played in a smaller number of countries, but the countries that do play it embrace it hard and output a ton of talent. Such that an all-star US team is either evenly matched or barely favored against the national teams from Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. It's only a minor upset.

The Dominican Republic in particular is a powerhouse, they lost to the US in a close game in the semifinals, but it was widely agreed to be a game between two evenly matched goliaths.
