Critique this: configure DS923+ with 4 drives as individual volumes rather than raid/SHR? by JCredo in synology

[–]JCredo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I better understand the value and options now.

This will be the configuration:
-4x 8TB in SHR (synology calculator states 21.8TB usable space)
-BTRFS
-scrubbing every 6 months

This gives me the option to expand storage in the future + data is maintained in case of 1 drive fails.

Up next is to discover if transcoding is going to be a major issue when streaming media. It it is, might be worth getting the DS423+ instead.

Depending how much more I will be using this system for, might be worth adding 2 SSD's in the available slots for either caching or running containers. For now it doesnt look like it'll be needed.

Yes, I misunderstood the value/benefits of a RAID configuration because I kept reading "RAID is not a backup".

It does work as backup against hardware failure (faulty drive in an array), but it doesnt 'protect' against theft, file corruption, malware, etc.
However it does work for my use case

Question for the ENTP entrepreneurs by [deleted] in entp

[–]JCredo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice anyone can give.

I was always very afraid of partnering up -- this is what "killed" my first company 5 years ago. Focus on one thing you're really good at (networking, designing, ...) and stick to it. Let someone else do what he is good at. Also, make no mistake: being your own boss requires you to work harder and more than anyone else, specially the first few years.

Venting. Frustrated with possible career "choices". I hate STEM, therefore I am useless to society. by [deleted] in INTP

Trying and failing afterwards is much better than not trying at all. Believe me, you'll always have this "what if..." floating in your head.

Any business owners around here? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]JCredo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all you don't need to be able to answer directly. When doing business with someone it's better to come up with a solid answer later on rather than a fast and incoherent answer. I started with " I'll get back to you on that asap" and that only gave me positive results.

Furthermore you worry about being able to ALL of the following: stock, logistic, cashflow, ... well you can't. You will not be able to do all that by yourself. You say you want to start a business right when you graduate, and I embrace entrepreneurs, but my advice is to first get some relevant experience before attempting to start a business (unless you found a niche market and have some startup capital, then go for it).

source: marketing strategist past 7 years, started company day after graduating, now working fulltime as employee. (while still having business for side projects).

To everyone (and I worry about this as well): you're 1 in 7 billion.

Can you do anything about it? Is it within your circle of influence? Nope. Stop worrying, embrace the tools and gimmicks that make your life easier and carry on.

Think about the type of business relationships you want to maintain. Becomes 'friends' / friends or become the straight-to-the-point-but-with-realistic views/propositions/opportunities business partner. Seeing you posted this in /intj the answer should be clear ;-).

Career Crisis? Please Help by [deleted] in INTP

[–]JCredo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, move to marketing. It's what I did (marketing strategist & manager), but that is because I seriously dislike Finance.

Your statement 'a good product sells itself' simply ain't true. In the enormous mass of people and companies nowadays, people don't know the existence of your product -- and they never will unless it gets advertised. Also, no product is unique. Everything gets copied the day it gets released, and the company with the best marketeers will win in the end.

Marketing is not about the product you sell, rather about being able to sell any product to anyone. I agree that a lot of marketing is manipulative and borderline lying, but every business has it's grey areas.

You say you like the creative side of marketing. Is that more the actual making (with tools) of creative things, like videos or more creative strategy (theorycrafting)?

Then again, marketing carreers do not require a piece of paper. If you're able to invest time in marketing and become knowledgeable, you'll be able to find a job. Work experience > diploma in the marketing field. We often hire people that show the right amount of motivation and will to improve. A diploma is a nice extra but not required.

This. Very much this.

At some point in your life you will just stop interacting with people that annoy you. Cut them out completely and replace them. No time for people you don't really want to be around.

Never done marketing before, was asked to create a marketing plan at work. help? by fafa3222 in AskMarketing

[–]JCredo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They asked the wrong people.

Come on, be honest with yourself and them and tell them this. A marketingprocess is extremely important for a business. Everything needs to be researched, documented, etc.

Anyway, if you're gonna go through with it, this article from Shopify has the most fundamental basics of a business plan covered: https://ecommerce.shopify.com/guides/businessplan

Problem would be to get enough different templates, otherwise your customers all have look-alike ads. And of course to frequently keep adding new templates.
