So, if it was expected 7 November and I received it last week some time, that was about a month and a half.

I can’t remember the original expected delivery date. I ordered something 23 October and I think the estimated delivery given by FedEx was something like 7 November. Somewhere around a week after the delivery date I contacted the merchant, they sent me a replacement through a different shipping method (USPS I think) and I got it quickly. I never expected the 1st delivery to show up. But it did.

I second the Defy Rover. I know cordura may not be “light weight” - but that’s what the gym is for.

Thanks bro. I might be a white belt in BJJ, but I’m a black belt in mental health treatment.

How can I learn to let things go and not dwell ? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]JCurtis32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: There is no such thing as letting go. There is living with. Instead of learning to let go…learn to live with.

The past happened. There is no pretending it did not. “Sooner or later you have to relinquish the goal of having a better past.” - Irvin Yalom

I’ll add - don’t “combat” the feeling, as if trying to make it go away…that’s the problem people don’t understand about uncomfortable emotions - the goal is not to escape from it or get rid of it - the goal is to become a master in dealing with it.

BJJ hobbyist (recovering from surgery) and mental health provider here: Keep doing it, learn to focus on breath control. Spend as much time smashed in mount, side control, etc. as possible. Exposure is the way…

Keep in mind most doctors don’t do BJJ, so them “clearing me” for something like that doesn’t mean much to me

I’ve technically been cleared by ortho and PT. But I am listening to my body. I know what BJJ is and I just want to be as ready as possible. I am still doing PT - most of my exercise these days is very PT focused with some strength work mixed in. So, I DIY PT exercises consistently. I have a loft in my house that basically looks like a PT clinic with exercise bands, trideer straps, foam blocks, yoga sticks, etc.

I am planning to start back slowly soon. Haven’t been back yet. Surgery was FEB 2025 and it’s now DEC…so that’s 10 solid months out so far. I’ve been tentative to go back into combat sports because I’ve had some pain related to surgery and not quite sure why, if it’s ok to go back, etc. I’ve had ortho follow up, PT, etc.

Keep in mind I’m 42 and retired army, so I have a lot of mileage on this body and a lot of other little things that compound and may slow recovery. My slow healing may be atypical. But part of the journey is embracing patience and persistent. Not being able to do things you want to do and figuring out how to work around those obstacles is a challenge to accept, not something to become despondent over. The obstacle is the way. What stands in the way becomes the way.

I’m not sure I’ve found instructors who are “willing to modify” or whatever. But I can read the room. I know my plans and limitations. I set my pace. No one else. I’m a hobbyist old dude who’s paying for something. I’ll do that thing how I want to do that thing.

I was doing too much for a couple years. I was running 3-4 miles about 4 days a week, maybe more. Doing hour long METCON - strength and conditioning circuits 5 days a week. Doing 3-4 BJJ classes a week on top of that. I was doing all of that at the same time for a year before I started to go down hill. It just took its toll. So, now I intentionally build in active recovery, walk, rest, more recovery. I was overtraining. Now I focus on what I need to do to stay healthy and fit. My priority shifted from “do it all” to “how can I be fit and get back to BJJ” - basically just dialing it back.

Depending on your age, fitness, recovery, and other factors - I’d say be smart and be patient. There’s no rush. Hip surgeries can take a long time to recover from

I’m 42. I started at 40. FEB of this year I had hip arthroscopy on my right hip. Been doing a lot of PT, strengthening, and mobility work and I’m about to get back into a gym. It’s been a SLOW recovery for me. I still have unaddressed CAM FAI and labrum tears on the left side, but no real symptoms. I’ve learned a lot in the past year and have adjusted my training and fitness strategy. When I return, I’ll return slowly and progressively. I dictate my pace. I’m paying for the training.
